Project Tame. Renault Clio 172

  Focus RS Mk1
yeah i knew id encoutner all the weight questions sooner or later...

To be honest on my daily drive it doesnt feel much different. cruising is the same. i dont need to thrash the car, and i dont 90% of the time. the roads thes days dont allow it!

and i dont use the car on track either...so made the decision to have a system. despite the ibvious weight disadvantages...

remeber ive lost spare wheels and tool kit too. so weight wont have gone up too much,, if at all :)

Yea but think how light it would be with out the tool kit, spare wheel & audi goodies :rasp:

Just playing mate lol, sure its alot more comfortable daily driver than my current project thread clio, kinda get the feeling of what life as a baked bean in a can is... But boy its one fast bean :D lol

Really like the your carbon plates mate  , i'm toying between those or french pressed plates just to finish of the out side of mine :S

i know how you feel mate, take a look at the first page you'l see my previous project supercharged saxo :) that was roasting in there! drove it to the ring n back too, no stereo either!

carbon all the way!

THIS INSTALL IS UP FOR SALE...

i have decided to go in a different route with the boot install...i will be keeping the pioneer 2channel amp and the rainbow comps...and the EQ

so up for grabs is the build itself. literally weeks old!
the hertz 8"sub
the Pioneer mono block amp.

All youd need to do is run some wiring (easy) and plug it all in :)

then if you wanted to upgrade your front end you can do at your own lesuire.

THE EQ is not for sale!

sub cost new £85 - few hours useage
amp cost new £124 - same useage
build few weeks old - estimated cost £50-60

will do the lot for £200 COLLECTION ONLY

it simply drops into the boot of a clio. no messing about, very easy. can be heard playing if you wish.

NEW INSTALL

Hi all, some may remember a little thread i made before about a stealthy install i made in my clio. Basically i still used the boot and kept everything hidden. Looked good and i was ok with it for a short while.

The idea of having that setup was to still allow me to put the shopping in the boot. Tesco run once a week! But i was never really happy, the 8" hertz sub i was using wasnt giving me enough and i was still not using the boot as i didnt want to ruin anything.

So my thinking was that i may aswel do a design that im happier with and while at it, i'll change the sub. So the 8" Hertz was sold, shame really because it was a nice little number. In favour of a Diamond Audio 12" D3 dual 2 ohm.

So i cracked on with making my new build, so here goes:

Step one, all the equipment ready to go in:

Equipment.jpg

Made myself a nice base to sit everything on, i will add now that most parts of the build are from 18mm mdf, some parts that are just visual are 12mm Mdf.

Sides.jpg

Amps in position and the rasied sections for the box to sit on:

Ampsin.jpg

Box and sub in position, I bought a box because it was an extra £10 on the price of the sub, so thought it saves me time:

Boxon.jpg

Eq on the back:

Eqonbox.jpg

Next i needed to decide on the real design, i know i wanted the sub n amps in the above positions but didnt really know what else, so several drawings later (you always think your boot is huge when drawing designs!!!!) and a few templates made up, one idea:

curvesleft.jpg

both sides templates:

bothcurves.jpg

This was an ok idea but i wanted to avoid using fibreglass as its not really somethig ive had much experience with, so i used this base idea design but without curves. Decision made i cracked on:

Sub front peice made for a flush mount:

Boxfront.jpg

The first side peice made:

Leftupright.jpg

Both of them in, these took me ages to make, getting the angles right, using only files to get the profiles I needed! took a while! worth it in the end!

bothupright.jpg

Another angle:

subflushface.jpg

Template for the top peice, will be all one bit when made:

toptemplates.jpg

Made in Mdf, getting there slowly:

lidtopmade.jpg

Now i had to decide on how i wanted the amps on view, this was tricky because of the way the wires come in and out of the amps, didnt want anything on show but i wanted to see both power lights on. being a nice blue it matches the stinger volt meter i have, hmmmm what to do here:

ampviews.jpg

So i thought about it for a while, more drawings later and i came up with a design. So cover made:

baseonamps.jpg

Marked out the right cuvre radius:

curvedrawing.jpg

Cut that:

curvecut.jpg

Then for the middle bit, template made:

ampmiddletemplate.jpg

I decided a nice little step down would be a nice touch, give the design a bit of depth rather than too many angles which i was finding hard to avoid. So 12mm rather than 18mm, i ended up with this:

middleoutofwood.jpg

Then everything was looking very angular so i made a start on some radius' on the edges of things, eg top cover peice, the amp covers, no router here, couldnt justify the £27 plus £20 curved bit so i used files and sand paper :(

radiusonfloor.jpg

Which leaves me looking like this, although this pics shows no radius' on yet!

ampfloorview.jpg

Thats all i have for now. Still to do is to make two peices that will cover the holes at each side of the install. easy to do. Then i need to cut a hole for the volt meter in the right hand upright. then carry on smoothing the design till im happy! Also have some more design points to put in, although more drawings are needed yet!

Side covers made:

sidesdone.jpg

Cut the hole for the volt meter, lft slightly large to allow for carpet thickness:

voltmeterinplace.jpg

All the fabrication work done really, pretty simple stuff:

alldone.jpg

So onto the wiring. This meant everything out of the boot, a good thorough hoover up, stick the base back in and fix down the amps and the box supports with new access holes, you'l see these in the pics below:

So then, I managed to get hold of a shed load of wiring clips, so useful, keeps all the wiring very tidy! Took me 5, yes five, hours to get it looking like this! Wanted everything looking right! Also half way through had a Major disaster! Split a whole class of coke into the wiring, spent 20mins mopping it all up! Was so pissed off with myself! All sorted though!

Distribution in place and some of the wiring clips used, these were spot on for 4 gauge J

wiringone.jpg

Power and earth routed to each amp all tied down with proper connections all over:

wiringtwo.jpg

Remote cable routed, linked the two together ready to fit into the delayed remote from the EQ:

wiringthree.jpg

Speaker cable for the sub hooked up, more on this later on:

wiringfour.jpg

RCA cables plumbed in, as my EQ only has one output I have to use some splitter to join both amps, hence the big clump of connectors at the rear of the pic:

wiringfive.jpg

Slightly too long on the RCA's (1 meter) so had to double back to keep it tidy:

wiringseven.jpg

The main section of wiring, looking quite cool, well as far as wiring goes:

wiringsix.jpg

Onto the amp connections, made sure all was done right here, proper connections etc:

wiringeight.jpg

Same for the other amp, quite tidy I think:

wiringnine.jpg

And all the wiring done:

wiringten.jpg

What a mission that was, so worth it and I actually really enjoyed doing it, huge lower back pains afterwards and the coke disaster was a nightmare but its all done and im very happy with it!

All that effort and its covered with two minutes:

wiringcovered.jpg

Fitted my rainbows a few weeks back, thought it post a pic of them:

rainbowsin.jpg

You'd think that'd be all for today, but no I thought why stop here! So I starting trimming. Done a fair amount of this in the past so knew what I needed to do. I don’t have any progress pics of me doing this, as its fairly boring stuff so I'll just post up my finished article pictures for you to see. Only thing I have to do now is to wire in my voltmeter (without spilling coke on it) and the install is 100% complete.

finfive.jpg

finishedone.jpg

I hope you all like, I much prefer this to my old setup. Just need to bok myself into source to have the EQ set up.

Thanks for looking again!

Any questions then just ask.

Looks decent, i wish i could make stuff, apart from Semen

  Focus RS Mk1
lol, yeah not the usual clio sport trend but im not one for driving quickly these days, with fule prices as they are! so more of a chilled out theme with the car!

  Focus RS Mk1
wow, been such a long time since ive updated this thread so i thought id update it for who all those who care.

After the sound system above was finished i kept it for a few months and got tired of having no boot and just gettin bored of it. So i sold it all on. To be honest i was gettin bored of the clio and was thinkin of somehting new, either a new project car, eg westfield, or sell the clio and buy a evo, or do some stuff to the clio which was the cheapest option, so after an agreement with the Mrs (were gettin married soon) i decided that ITB's was the way to go.

So out came all the dynamett, which was a pain in the arse but i persisted and got it all out. Boot is back to std form with sparewheels and tool kit back in!

I managed to source all the ITB from Adeyspec:
DSC03791.jpg

Got it fitted by jamsport:

IMG_1432.jpg

Then over to GDi for the map upload and check on the rollers:

Image009-1.jpg

The result: 198.7 bhp, 173 @ wheels. 159lfbt torque @ 5500rpm.

Which was fairly good for a std engine. While the ITB's were fitted a Miltek decat went on.

So after that i was happy and gave the cara good service myself and she had a full bill of health.

So next i moved onto a couple of smaller things, firstly a voltmeter for inside the car from my old install:

Image005.jpg

Image006-1.jpg

The a home made catch tank for the breather hose thats redundant (well goes into nothing once the inlet manifold is removed:

P4300025.jpg

I was happy for the time being with the engine spec, but the front of the car was looking a bit shabby, i do dual carridge way miles 75% of the time so stone chips were out of control. To solve this i enlisted the help of PVS in northampton who resprayed the front bumper and drivers wing (was chipped by jamsport during ITB fitting) job done and she was back to normal, not the acutal pic of work done but its the same as then:

DSC03072.jpg

During a nice afternoon a mate and I went out for some photo's, a few days later i noticed my splitter had broken at the front, a quick look back at the pics and i noticed it was broken during that photo session:

Reworked2.jpg

A quick call to a well known carbon fibre master aka Bic and his team and a new splitter was bought and fitted, job done. So the front end was back looking 100%. the boot is back to orginal standards, the engine is breathing better than ever and ive run out of things to do next.

Cams is an option but at £1500 is a big cost before a wedding. I'd like to do cobra suzuka S seats but also a £800-1000 option. So at the moment im focusing my efforts elsewhere, 4 pots are being made up as we speak and should be with me anyay.

300mm disc, willwood ultra light calipers, braided hoses and fancy pads will do me.

After that who knows!

Thanks for looking. sorry for lack of decent pictures!

  E39 M5 & Corsa track
Cars come on well Sean, i like the previous install, very tidy

lose those pads

I would initially agree with you seening EBC Red stuff, however, i can only say i am impressed with them, they work really well with this kit, granted they havnt been on track yet but they have had alot of abuse and have performed really well.

im usually a fan of DS2500 for fast road, track day use, but for the cost saving and how these perform they seem more than up to the job.

  Focus RS Mk1
Brakes are now on, the old discs were starting to get a little lip on them but the pads had loads of life in them. i'll keep hold of them for a while.

So standard setup:

Apologies for the filthy wheels!

Reviews, well the initial pedal feel, eg first 5mm has softened ever so slightly but once that travel has gone they bite so hard, braking hard i can feel the back of the car rear up and all the weight wanting the car so do an endo. Then just went you think that your slowing enough you can push the pedal even harder and the car just stops dead.

I can find the limit of the cars grip so quickly, can hear the tyres just starting to chirp on the road when they just loose grip under breaking.
overall, fantastic, no brake sqeaul either so thats a bonus. Will see how they fair on track next week but cant compare them to std brakes as i never used them on track!

So get them fitted if you can. I have here the Wilwood Lightweight, dust sealed calipers, CNC machined ally brackets, braided lines, 295mm discs, red stuff pads, Std fluid.

I think they look the business too, subtle behind the black rims :)

ktec offer this kit for £650 + vat, that doesnt include braided lines, or a decent pad! your looking at over £800!

Jamsport are offering the full kit for £700 all in. Bargain with everything you'l need!

Another picture of the brakes, apologies for qaulity, phone pics!

I made myself a rear strut brace at work, stainless steel, no fancy Billet brakctes here, just pure simple function! some say they work, some say they dont do much at all, but for free its worth a try.

just waiting on my shed motorsport stickers to arrive and one will go on this bar:

In preperation for my track day next week at beford ive done a uber mild strip of the rear, back seats weight a tonne!

4852_203369100175_718905175_7356391_273544_n.jpg

unfortunatly this highlighted how loud my exhaust is, (manifold to rear has one silencer), so a bit worried about the DB limit at bedford, i'll have to risk it, havent got time to sort out a silencer!

Also this also highlighted that my rear brakes were fooked! been hearing the rear bearings going but now they were making a racket so i removed them and they just fell apart! so new ones on the way and new pads too! discs were braking up and pads were scored! All after only 10,000miles! s**t qaulity!
next update will be after the track time at bedford!

  clio 172
the db police arn't to bad at bedford are they? compared to come other tracks where you only have to fart and they take you off the track for noise!

  Focus RS Mk1
yes, to be honest, on the road ive found them perfect, will wait till thursday for my track verdict. better than std though!

They are that bad.... last time I was there they took punters cars out to go WOT past the noise sensors

  Focus RS Mk1
yeah 1 strike and your out policy. im gonna have to risk it, if i get chucked off i know i'll need to sort it for next time!

I had to do away with the front studs though as they just werent long enough and when i put them into the spacer themselves they just kept coming loose (even with high temp thread lock) steel studs into ally spacers didnt work together well!
So some longer bolt have been put to use on the front now.

Milestone milage:

Ok, so a little while ago i curbed my wheels, both the left ones, i was gutted as i always kept them mint. after calling chips way and gettin no reply i thought sod it, i'll do it myself! done wheels before but never a repair, only repaint! so here's how i did it!

Before with curbage on the bottom of the lip, this is actually a front wheel but i started on the rear first which was worse!

To do this i used the Cliosport guide for a DIY wheel repair.

In primer, 3-4 coats.

Now then, i wanted a change from black but i still liked the dark theme, so rather than some lighter athracite (sp) i opted for something a little darker and one of my fav colours for any car! Ford graphite grey:

9731_271437225175_718905175_8982172_46495_n.jpg

Then this is in laquer, all phone pics so its hard to see the real colour! i rubbed it down again with 1200 grade after paint to get the dul matt finish, no pictures of that though!
