Purchasing a 172 or 182

Im thinking of getting a Clio 172 or 182 Sport next April. Gonna save over the Winter and then get the rest of the cash from a loan.

Anyways, would you say the 182 is much better than the 172 overall? I prefer the look of the 182s, and the look lovely in the Racing Blue or Titanium. The value for money aspect comes into it aswell.

Ill be 20, driving 3 years with 1 years no claims. Insurance isnt really a problem.

What are peoples views on the 182s also? Best place to purchase them if new? Are the cup extras worth it?

You wont notice much difference in the drive but the 182 looks like a wheelbarrow

i had mk2 172 for 6 months last year and then opted to a 182 couple months ago, and i must say the 182 is the better car for these reasons;

1) my 182 is faster than my old 172, feel the vvt cut in more on a 182.

2) 182 with cup suspension handles alot better then the 172 - so get the cup suspension its worth it

3) i always thought the exhaust were stupid but now ive really grown to them and actually like them

4) in my opinion black gold is the best colour to go for and you cant get that on a 172.

I cant tell the difference between the two apart from the 182 sounds louder inside.Most 172 drivers have opted for eibachs anyway which gives the same if not slightly better handling then the 182 with cup bits on.And icebergh is simply the best clour ever not available on 182 thow

ive recently changed from the 172 to the 182 cant say there is a great deal of difference although i love the 182 and wouldnt swap so if you can afford to i would go for the 182 if not the 172 is still a great car

this is only my opinion not fact, reason why i think my 182 is faster than 172 could be

a) i had a slow 172

b) i got a really quick 182

c) 182 are quicker .

my mate has got a cup and we used to do loads of races on straights and he would win even when i had a Viper IK fitted. But now il got my 182 weve had races again and it a diferrent story now i would win or it will be neck and neck.

With the vvt, i can feel it more on a 182 especialy 2nd gear at 5k as it really pulls the car more than it did on my old 172

Youll save about £3k by going for a 172 thats 6 months older than the equivalent 182. As said above, handling can be sorted for £150 with a set of eibach springs, and the performance differences are small(ish), and can probably be made up with an R-sport ecu (about £250 fitted) and a decent exhaust (£300ish). So 172 defo the cheaper option.

But if you go for a 172 will you always be wishing youd gone the extra mile for the 182?

I had my 03 172 from new for just over a year then traded up to a 182. I wasnt expecting it to be much better but it is. Ive not driven one without the Cup suspension, but with it it handles a hell of a lot better than the standard 172 ever did.

The engine pulls much stronger from the midrange also.

Other than that theres not much more in it, but those two things are pretty important improvements if you ask me.

And its been posted a million times before, the kick at around 5k is not the VVT its the cams becoming there most efficient.

The improvements are only really noticeable if you drive your car hard by the way. Most people wouldnt notice if they just pootle about. Mine gets given death as often as possible.

I never understood that, they knew inferno was gonna be an option months ago, so why delay its inception?

Id have ordered it instead of the arctic if it was available coz I loved my Red 172.

At this rate the Racing Blue wont be as uncommon as what i want!! lol

When did you order mate? Ordered mine on 5th July, probably get it the end of Sept or somethin. Not too bothered coz i have the 172 till it arrives.....thats if it doesnt break again

I never had one on order before I got the 172? I was always gonna get a 172 when I knew we were gonna get a 182 as well.
