Removing the alternator on a valver.......

  renault clio 1.8 16v
Surely, nothing else can go wrong on my valver!

The alternator is now knackered. I've had it checked by an auto electrician and its buggered.

Hard job?

Im right in saying its just next to the cambelt area? Right?

Does the inlet manifold have bolts top and bottom because I see that these are probably the only bolts I need to remove to get access to the alternator? Right?

Will the plenum chamber come away when the inlet manifold bolts are removed? I can't see anywhere that the plenum chamber is attached, apart from directly to the inlet manifold.

There are 5 bolts just below the fuel rail, but my question is are there also 5 bolts underneath the inlet manifold that you can't see from a top view?

If there are then Im probably buggered (cause I cant get to em without a ramp!) and need to take it to my usual technician, but the price he's quoted me to do the job I'd rather do it myself!

I think valvers are possibly the hardest car in history to work on! Just no space anywhere!

I still love it though!

Cheers
Leigh

Top man,

Ta mate, simplifies it massively!

I was quoted £270 plus VAT with a recon alternator!

What do we reckon to a recon alternator? I get 12months warranty with it.

Renault new ones are £130+VAT or inc VAT. That was the price I was quoted.

Cheers

The recon alternator i was quoted was priced at £70 but the mush in that link you sent me says £75 from GSF, which seems cheap to me!

If you're going through the hassel of changing it, might as well get a new one, otherwise you might have to do it all again in the near future?

theres nothing wrong with a reconned alternator, itl do exactly the same job and last just as long (if no cutting corners have been used!). the diode packs (rectifiers) are the most common failure. id go with re-conned, save urself some dollar :)

I did min about a month ago it was a bit of a pain due to lack of room but easy enough, buy a haynes manual it guides you throught it step by step. Basically just a case of removing the bonnet, drivers headlight, slackening the aux belt, the just undo the alternator bolts and slide it out the hole where the headlight sits. should take 1-2 hrs and im no mechanic
