Replacing an Engine?

Ian

Where can I send it to get it skimmed? Seem to remember somebody quoting for it before and it wasn't too expensive, but can't remember who. I'll get on with taking the head off tomorrow and get some photos up.

Looking at around 30 quid to skim it probably. Just look for local precision engineering places in yellow pages and they will be able to do it

Could this split in the terminal be causing the engine not to start? I'm guessing this is the problem.. resistance and all that:

All that happens when I turn the key is a single click, no continuous noise from the starter motor or anything. If that is the problem, what's the best and quickest solution?

Can safely say the K-Seal did not work. Not convinced that it was the starter motor that was jammed either, I'm fairly certain that something in the engine is bent, as I can hear a tapping a couple of times a second. I think that would stop the engine from starting over easily? Going out for a bit now, but planning to strip the engine later today or tomorrow.

As an aside, the central locking isn't working, but locks and unlocks every time someone opens the door.

Anyone know the setup of this engine well? Been working on it since 9am, but I can't get the bracket that holds the belts etc off which means I can't get the timing belt shield off or the manifold. Renault really take the pizz with this.

Right, six days of work later and I've finally got the cylinder head off. Gasket had a massive crack in it, so I suppose in a way it's good to see that I haven't done all this for nothing. Took me and my dad about 7 hours to get one bolt out of the inlet manifold. Renault design at it's finest, although I'm sure I was probably doing it wrong somehow. This is roughly the position of the bolt, underneath the inlet pipes:

Now that the head is off this is what I'm greeted with. I could really do with some advice here, as I have no idea what they should look like. Do the bores/pistons etc look in ok condition, or are they knackered?:

There was a lot of water sat in the two middle bores, but it seems to have gone now. There is a lot of water sat just below the surface visible through the small holes though?

Going to send the head off to be skimmed, but not sure what I need to remove from it first if anyone could help on that one?

Cheers,

Managed to take the inlet manifold off in the car, you can just about see it at the bottom of the 2nd photo. Are all the internals ok as they are - the springs etc? Oh and is it ok to give it a pressure wash?

Don't really want to send it off before I know for sure that the engine is ok, so hopefully get someone to give it a check over soon.
