S1 Exige refresh

  Exige S1 + Honda S1
Some pics etc for the people who may be interested-

Thought after 68k miles on the VHPD thought it would be best to strip the engine down to see what kind of state it is in, and if it needs rebuilt. I need to send the head off to Dan to sort the Shims out and stop them rattling when cold too.
Cant really bothered explaining it all, a picture says a thousand words an all that

The cams seem like new, almost no wear, which is nice.
Image356.jpg

The tensioner bolt wouldnt budge, with a breaker bar on it and ended up being rounded off.
Image359.jpg

The head bolts have been replaced previously, one was overtightened and needed a bolt remover to get it out too.
Image362.jpg

Head off, still had the tensioner fitted.

The liners are in good condition, slightly glazed and a bit of scoring on the thrust side but def not 68kmiles of abuse!

Thought this would be a good chance to paitn the cam cover titanium too.

The head should be back this week with some nice work done on it.

S1's look so much more like a track refugee than the S2's. Looks very nice.

Cheers everyone,

Smart mate, will be a nice thread to see progressing

Any other plans bar the engine work?

Some better cooling, bigger roof scoop, sorting some electrics and the upgraded ECU, the bodywork can be done when I sell it :D

never new they where TB'd or aint your's standard?

All VHPD K series use ITB's, they are covered by an almighty airbox though

Nice effort!

The joy of K Series engines. I love the S1's though

to true, but its worth it

Thankya, I wanted to check the liners and pistons, the engine require a rebuild every 30k miles(ish), I dont have any reciepts for work being done so wanted to check everything was alright. Plus the tappets were noisy when cold and it needed done before it starts to rob some power. I plan on doing plenty of trackdays next year, in Englandshire and Abroad so want it to be 100%

I still need to check the engine number to see if it has been replaced at some point

Great to see! Good luck with the rebuild, we're getting an engine done by Scholar this week so will be interesting to see how the Minister one is in comparison.

I love the standard mapping (even though its crap) on the S1, pops and burbles like feck!

Gotta love lumpy idle. Would ideally have an emerald and piper 1444s but thats too much monies just now.

and make it a mongrel? :D Nah it would be a shame to do it to a S1 Exige.

The K20 engine has no character, plus I dont have a spare £4,000 for the kit!

We spent 6k with minister! RObbin c***s and it blew up after 3 races! Monopoly tho! There the only sealers in the UK for the championship...

Hear different things, supposedly Scholar are more helpful than Minister (maybe not in your case!) but Minister actually do the better engines. Scholar do that really strong block though...EVO 4 or whatever, so will be helpful for endurance racing.

Rare car you have there! Not many left with the K-series still in them. Most get that robotic, souless Honda conversion...

Agree with the souless comment, it is much faster though, even feels very torquey (cant believe I said that about a Honda engine:clown:)

Will post up pics when I get the head back, also waiting on sikaflex for the roof scoop.

Justin - Not got the monies, plus would rather do it to a cheaper elise and put the motorsport kit onto it.

didnt realise they need rebuilding that quick chap, i thought it was longer for some reason lol, so what needs to be changed at that miles or it is a case of strip down, check and see?

Most rebuilds require everything including rods and pistons(forged) but occasionally if done with better components the first time round they will last a lot longer. Depends what kind of mileage they are doing too, on a track or on the motorways.(Ive certainly not given it an easy life!)
