Shiney F4R bottom end bits - FAO Porkie

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
oh and Mark Fish has had NOTHING to do with any shoddy work EVER on my car before rumours start!

Mans a clio genius :)

+1

Everything we have seen that would have had input from Mark has been spot on.

Hope nothing I said gave any impression otherwise, Mark didnt do the engine at all.

Neil Roper is one of the top cylinder head engineers in the UK. Any work done by him is always top notch. He's a real nice guy as well. I'd recommend him to anyone wanting a top job done on a head.

Agreed, Neil is as good as they get, he did an epic job on a 1600 fiesta head for an engine MWM built that I mapped (171bhp on standard 1600 bottom end!) and the work on my vauxhall head he did was awesome too.

Slightly better picture I took on my lunchbreak when I popped over to Mikes, my mrs attacked all the plastics with some "new look trim gel" stuff and it seems to have done the trick.

Hopefully we'll start some of the mapping in the next day or two so it can be run in properly before we do the under load stuff.

One snag we have hit though is the megane injectors we wanted to be using turned up with 2 correct and 2 with some other injectors in the box and Renault reckon that loads of them have been mis-boxed and it could be 2 weeks till they can get us another set.

Anyone got a set lieing around we could use for a couple of weeks to do the mapping etc until Lee's new ones turn up?

what a s**t, guess I might wait to pick up mine then. Bay looks really tidy, can't wait to get my new loom in and tidy the bay up. Didn't fancy fitting the vibrotechnic engine mounts then?

The loom was a real mess on this, to the point of being a bit dangerous in places (ie risks of shorts from exposed cables where it had moved about etc), Mike seems to have salvaged it though, at one point we thought the whole was going to need to be binned and started again but he's managed to just redo some bits of it.
Its still not perfect, but its safe and tidy at least!

Must say im actually quite jealous of the end result, its come out really well I think, not blingy or tacky, just neat and functional.

If it drives half as well as it looks, mission accomplished :)

Sorry, didnt see the edit about the mounts.

Yes Mike is very keen that it should have uprated mounts, hell even our daily 172 my mrs drives has them, lol, but we werent sure if there was perhaps some reason it didnt have them so we were going to get Lee to talk to Mark Fish about that, neither of us could think of any reason why he wouldnt want them, but wasnt sure if he had some preference for the standard ones for some reason (I know people into cosworths who hate the uprated mounts and prefer new standard for example)

We're very much aware that Lee wants Mark Fish to be in overall control of his car, so we are respecting that and we're just sorting out the engine itself and doing jobs specifically asked of us rather than taking ownership of the whole car as thats not what Lee is after.

I've had them for a couple of years, they do give the car a much more solid response 'feel'.

It does look tidy now, mine is having to come out entirely, I've bought one which has already been shrinkwrapped and made up to stay fairly OEM to go on. Caneet wait

Do the mounts make it really harsh and vibrate alot? cant be that bad if your mrs has them on a daily driver?

I seem to remember Fred saying something about them...

gonna do a search

Sounds good mate :)

My mrs has just redone the loom in her 172, she took all the nsty cracked renault plastic trunking off and fitted some braided covering instead, will grab a picture to show you what I mean when I get a chance.

No mate, they make it a bit harsher if you were to REALLY analyse it im sure, but nothing that you would really notice at all when driving it IMHO, we're not talking solid mounts here after all, just a bit firmer.

As above, you get used to it quite quickly, theres a bit of cabin vibration, more so when new but they bed in after awhile. If after a couple of weeks the vibration is still intolerable it's usually where they've been fitted wrong

Yeah if you could, makes a big difference. This loom I've picked up has most of the original trunking but been made to work with the new ECU, I may dazzle it up before I let TDF do their magic, just to be anal lol.

What Mike said when I mentioned it to him is that the best time to really judge if they are working well enough or not on the standard ones is when its on the rollers as you can see if its trying to climb out the bay or not when its under load with the bonnet up!

Neither me or him are aware of any significant downside to the uprated ones though (given that they dont vibrate badly or anything), so when replacing worn out standard ones, we both would go for those as a matter of course rather than buying new standard ones as they do definately limit movement which is good for exhaust life etc.
Your standard ones seem to be in good order though, rather unusually for a clio, lol

Sounds like a plan to me.

In the mean time feel free to ask Mark, we'll be guided by him as wether we fit uprated or just new standard if they do need doing.

Thanks James, bit better than my iPhone effort :)

No worries :)

Its great to see how its turned out, you really should have seen the hours Mike & Chip have put into this with such attention to detail, You guys should be very proud of the finished piece!

I owe'd Porkie big time so it really was the least I could do, but Mike has been an absolute star, above and beyond the call of duty for a favour!

He originally quoted through the books at MWM for him and Jack just to remove and refit an engine (original plan was to just either for me to give a standard lump a quick freshen up or even for them to fit a secondhand engine from elsewhere) but when I said we were going to do a bit more to it than that he agreed to give me a hand "in his spare time" with "whatever it needed" free of charge as a favour to me, and between me wanting to over engineer it and Porkie creeping the spec a bit with wanting cams etc and then us finding yet more problems like the clutch had fallen apart and taken out the flywheel and the loom was gash and all that stuff, its safe to say he didnt have in mind quite how its ended up, but fair play to the guy for seeing it through anyway!

Let me know how you get on when on rollers and we will go from there I guess?

Lee, they'll be fine.

Don't like the sound of the problem with the injectors, ours are on order and should be here on Thursday.

They better be right.

Tony,

The ones we got were wrongly boxed.

They had a pink band round the body of the injector and when Renault put the part number into their computer, they turned out to be 1.4 twingo/ megane/ kangoo injectors.

The correct ones should have a little blue tab on the side.

vibrate your teeth out!

I thought we were the southern fairy's, seems they have moved up north ;)

If the mounts are locked up in there relaxed position the vibration really is minimal, If the gearbox mount is fitted first & tightened then the upper engine mount the vibration can be pretty bad, you really need to fit the lot in place then lock it all up once both the mounts are on, Granted the first 500 miles "bedding in" the rear view mirror/ dash rattle occurs but once settled there ace!

they don't make the car faster, therefore they are a pointless device, southern poofs - making stuff look "pukka" since 1971

Looks great! thanks to all Chip and Mike for all the hard work and super favour's of all he labour and stuff!!!

Very Excited!

Although the reality of spunking £6.5k on a 2nd reserve trackcar that my mates drive more than me has sunk in a bit now! whooooooopsy!

sure it will be worth it!

Chip will tell you exactly. But roughly, slightly high comp pistons, forged rods. Cams, Ported head, one piece valves, ATpower ITB's and mapped by chip on Omex. NOT going for big power at all. Just over engineered for reliability and longevity.

I'll eagerly await the reply. I'd probably expect 220bhp at least from that though. Depends what the limit gets raised to I suppose.
