Shiney F4R bottom end bits - FAO Porkie

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
As Porkie says, this build isnt about chasing numbers, its about managing to stay in one piece.
If we can have about 210bhp on a bit of a footballer map so we know its nice and safe, that'll do nicely, porkie is the sort of person if there was only 95 ron fuel available on site and he ran out then he'd just fill up on that and trackday it and hope its ok, lol.

Rough spec:
11.8:1 compression forged pistons and steel rods
Mild port job on the head
C&B replica cams
Inconel 2 piece supertech exhaust valves (but the join is much higher up than standard away from the heat and better transfer into the guides)
single piece supertech inlet valves
uprated valve springs
omex 600 ecu
Megane turbo injectors
AT power (far too short really but its what he had) throttle bodies
Helix organic clutch
ARP rod bolts
ARP head studs
then obviously all the normal stuff like new cambelt and new oil pump, new valves guides etc

There is the minor incovenience of my birthday this weekend so im away for a bit, but hopefully we'll start the mapping the weekend after (injectors should be in by then too which is also holding us back) with the plan being to have it ready for bedford on the 25th of feb as we know Lee will cry if it isnt!

Fare enough chip. Are you not slightly tempted to see what she can make before you down tune it? no point putting meggy injectors in otherwise;)

Megane injectors are needed so that he doesnt burn another standard one out running around at max duty like he already has done on this engine (probably contributed to the piston failure as would have gone more lean than it was otherwise running), so again its a reliability mod.

I made that mistake you are talking about on my nova engine, was absolutely awesome at 450bhp, drove superbly, but I decided "to see what I could get out of it", and when heading towards 600bhp I cracked the block, all just chasing a power figure I had utterly no use for! And my build was way dearer than this one, was at least a years disposable income to me!

Lesson learned, just get the power you want, and stick there, no point "lets see what it can do" as you might find out what it cant do as well!

RPM wise on this engine for example, we still have standard lifters, so if I keep pushing it with the mapping to see how far it revs, it might be that the first time I know what the limit was is when I have just gone past it and mashed a valve with a piston, not something we are after.
That said, im not going to utterly cripple it with the mapping, we want it safe but we dont want it pathetic, so if it really comfortably makes a little more power than I am aiming for than so be it, I dont think we're going to see a lot more though, but we never wanted to anyway.

True, but that bottom end should be pretty strong. I'm sure it will pull well regardless, so Porkies mate will enjoy it ;)
What was the issue with his standard injectors?

I wasnt involved at the time of the standard one failing, but I would imagine it was a combination of being old and high mileage to begin with and then getting hammered with really high duty cycles all the time.
This way we have new injectors so they are in better condition to start with, and we dont have to work them as hard, plus they will also allow a few bhp more no doubt too like you say which is no bad thing, although Im saying the focus is on being strong, I do still want it to go well and Porkie even more so of course!

210 would be good number!

Can't believe I am happy with that! Used to be if it didn't start with a least a 4 then it was gay!

I've grown up :)

!

I'm not that bad!!!

else I would have melted some of the BIG bhp turbos engines I have had!!!

Same sort of figures we are after really, don't want any more than that,it's got to last.

Better to have injectors working at 60% than 100% all the time.

Good way to look at it mate. I'll have to speak to Matt about mine. Pushing towards the injector limits with the next mod I'd imagine.

Look good.

Didn't i also read that 1*2 injectors are stupid money but the 225 ones are not bad priced?

It's not that common, but when racing it makes sense to be cautious. Engines working hard constantly, so limits are important

I'd go longer bodies... But hate bonnet pins...

Or am I being silly?

I'd say no if you can keep it all looking standard then your better off.

The problem seems to be the angle the TB's come off the head this pushes them up to the bonnet, would it not be possible to fit a tapered cnc'd plate against the head to angle the TB's under the slam panel along with a shorter rad, then you could fit a longer trumpet and use the left hand side air inlet to duct air to the filter, the lads running 205's do this and it works fine.

Nice build by the way;)

Good thread!

Chip (it's DaveR here!) are you still contracting or have you moved into this full time now?

What,standard injectors?

If so no,but we don't want any, prevention is better than cure.

Exactly the right attitude, if you know a component is going to be near its limits, then replace it with one that isnt if you have the opportunity to do so IMHO.

Did you get any pics?
Judging by the job he has done on both of your westies, "amazing" is what I would expect TBH, really talented guy. :)

Nope... makes the Westy work look DIY. Its OFF the charts. Seriously cool install. PROPER car. The very very best of everything. Its a masterpeice!

Will get some pics

Bloody hell you are good at manipulating people without them even realising you are doing it, no wonder you manage to get punters to part with millions of pounds, I bet they think it was their idea too? lol

Sadly though, despite the fact that you have now succesfully made me desperately want to have a reason to go to Snet on saturday (like bringing your car there eh?) it still doesnt change the fact there is no chance it will be ready by then.
