Silver 197 losing to my vectra in manchester

  197
Pink, he bought the clio before the vec and it ended up being a play toy, but hes realised he can drive and have more fun in the vec over the clio. :D

Then I think the fun factor here is the ability to give it some beans when some asswipe is least expecting it (as in sleeper). My Stilo JTD used to do this well but more "overall" fun?, surely the Clio has it all.

the clio is for thrashing round country lanes and not worrying about it. with the clio being completly stripped and only on eibach springs the handling is very twichy the vectra is just planted you can chuck it into corners and it will just go round. i had a big crash in a 172 when it aquaplaned and spun on the moterway and now i never feel completly comfortable in it where as i feel completly safe in the vectra. i hope that explains it for you lol

pretty embarassing lol. would love to hear the 197s driver side of the story lol. Just find it hard to believe that a 1.9cdti vectra nailed a 197 lol. not saying it didn't do so...but I can't help but laugh to myself that it did. would be interesting to find out the other drivers story. maybe he had a boot load of sh*te, carrying fragil goods etc. (does this sound like excuses lol).

Did you know...?

The 197 is more popular on every other forum other than Cliosport.
I think the RS Clios in general get more love one every other forum than CS, unless you have a a cup. Then a few people on CS respect it...

I can actually see what your saying about having more fun in the vectra though, I found the 197 more fun than my 172 for the exact same reason, it was glued to the road, never felt twitchy or nervous at all.

no way is a vectra more planted or go around a turn quicker than the clio with just coilovers. your vectra weights around 1580kg so thats a power to weight of 122bhp plus u had passengers so even less. that clio driver cant drive or got caught in the wrong gear. as an example i was behind a audi Q7 4.2litre diesel dont know the torque they have but i bet its more than that vectra he couldnt pull away from my clio

When talking about the 197 "losing" to the Vectra what do you mean?
As far as i know the public roads dont have a start/finish line.

That would be when he was going flat out in 4th gear when he backed off when the vec had several car lengths on it.

I was in the back of the Vec and no messing around it panned the 197 especially with 4 not exactly small people in the car!!!

I've chased Chris in the Vec over some country roads and that car takes some catching it's a genuinely quick motor, hat's off to Chris it's a very well sorted car!

For all I love 197's this was reasonably amusing!

I'm not surprised your Vectra managed to put one over on a 197 to be honest Chris, that Vectra is stupidly quick for what it is. When a few of us went for a blast over Rivi that time it was showing up a few Clios that night lol.

lol...just doesn't make any sense to me at all! i just can't see this being the whole story!

Started on the East Lancs (A580) at the traffic lights where there is I think a Total Garage on your right just before you stop heading towards manchester. Both cars went from a standing start at full bore with no cars ahead of them up to 4th gear. The 197 was going for it as you could hear it really going and he hit the limiter in 2nd.

Exactly Jonff, I was the 1st car behind him, I was giving it some and I was pulling away from people behind me really struggling to keep with Chris.

love the debate lol all i wanted to know was if the guy was on here that way we could have all had a laugh but obviously he's not.

my clio would dick the vectra off the line anything rolling from around 30mph it would be close though.

we use the vetra as a bench mark nothings worth having if it doesn't beat the vectra. A mates just had his golf remapped to 200bhp and he just managed to pass me. On the motorway and country lanes i can keep up with rexe in his wrx impreza and thats 225 bhp.

does double the mpg of the 197 as well lol

As I said somethings not right. I had a play with a 325d the other month. They have 194bhp and 290lb torque and I comfortably beat it and I would put my money on those been quicker than a Vectra with 4 adults in it lol.
Also an Astra 888 is 17.65 to 100 and I really can't see the Vectra been quicker than that somehow!

I reckon he fucked up of something.

At Marham trackday I had a play on the track when it was empty, one of the lads there had a 1.9cdti astra, remapped to the same standard as yours. He was on his own and I left him behind going down the runway.

I'm not taking anything away from the Vectra or the driver, so please don't kick off, but I reckon the 197 driver missed a gear or got caught low down, who knows eh? As he clearly isn't on here.

I'm not claiming its a better drivers car although i do have more fun in it than i do in my phase 1 172 as its far more planted and the torque is great. A lot of the clio boys have been really impressed with it when we have done cross country blasts.

Its all down to the driver ,good driver in an average car will beat a crap driver in a good car.

I honestly think given the chance on say the evo triangle i'd keep up or be faster than the 197 in the barge. It is on coilovers now aswell which helps a bit.

yes it was a straightline dual carraige way race but as said in my original post he should have beat me as getting off the line is not the barges strong point. It was only a laugh with an unexpected outcome.

LMFAO, you seriously think a diesiesel vectra would keep with a 197 on ANY corner?, its one of the best handeling hatces ever made, yet a vauxall vectra derv is as quick?, the kid who you raced clearly couldnt drive as bhp per tonne wise a 197 woule pwn your vectra, and dont start saying torque is what makes a car quick because thats a bs argument, why are derv 0-60 times so slow if torque wins races?, torque is only any good if you dont know how to change down a few gears and you put your foot down in 5th from 30, so in a 5th gear from 30 race, you would own a 197

what lol?! put the car with low torque in whatever gear you want the diesel with the hight torque will also put it in the gear he needs to get on its power curve and then the car with low torque still looses. simples

Maybe he hit rev limiter in 2nd and messed up his gear change to 3rd.

I "raced" a mate on our private runway. he was in a 2.2cdti Civic and i was in my standard ph2 172.
From a rolling start of about 20mph we floored it, i could not lose him, it was only when we got to about 75 that i was fractionally pulling on him.

So if this guy fu**ed a gear change i would not be suprised the vectra would of pulled away.
Even if the guy could drive, i dont think there would be much in it.

other people will say exactly the same thing. I know everyone love clios on here i do i'm on my second one but they are not the fastest things in the world and plenty of unsuspecting cars could give them a good run for their money with the right driver.

as for the torque point what are you on about? you drive any car in its power range it just happens to be lower in a diesel. as long as you keep it on boost its fine. as for dropping a couple of cogs by the time you have done that the diesel would have already shot off.

power range the clio is 5k-6.5k my diesel comes on boost at 2.5k and dies of around 5k so thats a bigger power range.

Very true, i love my clio but there are faster cars out there.

Never underestimate a Turbo Diesel is the moral of this story lol

love the way people **** of 197/200's when they knock about in s**t box 172's
i don't think a single person has slagged off a 197/200 in this thread. i've got a 172 as i don't like all the stabilty control and random computer crap used to help keep the 182/197/200 on the road. no need to come on calling 172's.

Lol oh this has made me giggle.

Lets get one thing straight here:

He raced a 197.

He beat a 197.

It doesnt matter if the 197 missed a gear/couldnt drive etc etc blah blah so on and so forth.

He beat it in this instance.

I dont think any of you realise how much torque that is, yes its a derv, but i have the oppotunity to drive powerfull dervs most days, and we have in at the moment a chipped 170bhp derv golf GT, which has 300 lb ft of torque and i can tell you now when rolling it IS at least as fast as my 172, and this is tested over many different days, not just one sprint.

How anyone can come on here and say 'bollox it didnt happen' or 'if the guy had known how to drive' etc etc i dont know, and i really cant understand how hard it is to understand that in this instance he beat a 197.

GET OVER IT.

And w17gle, fair play mate, nice one :)

It's probably because this was a one off "race" where the 197 driver may or may not have been on the ball. If someone on here with a 197 pre-arranged a few drags off the line with this Vectra then that would be a more realistic outcome.

From 70 onwards the Vectra would be quicker though if it's near 200bhp/320lb/ft

But this is the whole point!!!!!!!!!

I wasnt pre arraged, yes the outcome might have been different if it was planned, but it wasnt, he simply states that in this instance he won!

There is no need for anyone to say 'yeah but if this happened' or 'if that happened it would be different' Thats doesnt matter!

The point is, which he states, he raced one and out dragged it, CS gets sooooo boring when every bloody road story turns into this type of thread with 100 people saying 'yeah but if this was different it wouldnt have won' etc.

I dont mean any nastiness here at all, but the whole what if sinario(sp) has got older than the hills now, why cant anyone simply say ok you beat him this time and bloody leave it is beond me

I can fully believe this tbh, I find that diesels with good power/torque dont suffer as much bogging down from weight as would a n/a petrol would

Clio's arent really straight line racers, they aint bad, but they're more of a corners car

My mate has a vectra gsi 3.2 v6 wound down on coilovers, through the twisties the clio has it but in a straight line he can just say pull away.....pre de-cat, would probably be about even's now

Good work, as for the 'vectra will beat or keep up with a clio round a backroad' its all down to the driver with this one, if they have no idea how to drive then the clio is in the wrong hands against someone you who clearly know how to drive the vectra, if in the right hands, you will get beaten, but not by a great margin i expect, torque can pull you out of corners great :)

As for my next car, probably be a seat cupra tdi mapped to 200bhp, should catch a few people out with the black smoke screen :D
