someone wants to swap my 197 for his....

  Renaultsport Clio 197
1997 3.2 ///M3 SMG... fully loaded (leather heated seats etc) Aftermarket bi-xenon, exhaust, dvd player. Low mileage ( 50.000 miles IIRC) and in absolutely perfect condition (best in the country)

he wants to give me the ///M and around...4500, max 5000 euros.

I'd really like them 300+ horses and rwd but he's being a bit cheap EH?
my clio is also fully loaded (xenon, sunroof etc) and is in warranty for 6 more months.Bought in May 2007.

What would you do ?

(keep in mind that I love the clio but would love more power and rwd)

How's the mpg in the ///M ? Cause 197 has the worst mpg of all the hot hatches.

Cheers

another option is to wait a year, sell the clio and import a new mk5gti from US and get it upto 300bhp.. but it's still won't be able to go sideways ;)

If some one wants to swap cars, its allways for their benefit Imo. Id keep the clio Tbh.

Those 3.2 evo engines aren't as solid as you'd like, the double vanos needs attention, and if the engines go wrong they're hard to find replacements for and are farking expensive for parts. Also the SMG boxes are weak(ish) as are the 6 speed manuals. The 3.0 5 speed normal M3 is a better bet really.

same as everyone else really, stick to the 197... the BM is going to get costly to maintain, run etc. Its a nice car, but not a decent swap i dont think.

SMG's not the best system they can be a bit jerky and harsh to say the least plus if they fail they can/are expensive to repair/replace! in slow moving traffic or when manouvering they can be a right pain! be carefull.

  Racing blue 182
they are gorgeous cars, when the ex and i had one (wasnt the smg but the same shape mtec one) we had nothing but trouble with it, it hated me too i think, i used to be going around an island in it and the steering wheel would just lock in place and nearly cause me to crash and the amount of other things that went wrong on it was unbelievable!!! i hated that car and id never consider another one.

I'd keep the 197 tbh, E36 is the pup of all the M3's made, it was the weak link IMO the E30, E46 and E92 are far superior. Image is terrible these days and to run properly it'll cost alot more than the 197. They werent a bad car in their day but all you'll gain is straight line speed, horrible image and a hole you'll throw money at all the time.

If you were in the UK and he was offering £4500/£5000 in todays climate, I would say it was a 'Fair' swap.

However, with what you've said about numbers of them on the road etc. i'm sure the only winner will be the other guy.

If you're financially MUCH better off, do it. If not, screw it.
