Spark plugs difficult to remove.

I was having a futter about at the weekend and wanted to check the state of my plugs whilst I had the upper inlet off.

The first thing I noticed was that the plug holes were half full of engine oil, there was no leaks from the rocker so I can only imagine someone poured used engine oil in there?

After I soaked most of the oil out with rags and paper towels, I tried to remove a plug and it felt as if it was going to ring the threads if I put any more pressure on them.

Is this a common problem? I'm afraid I'll wreck the threads on the head.

Can't imagine someone pouring oil down all 4 plug holes.

The rocker cover is probably leaking internally into the plug hole bore. Mine does the same on one or two.

The plugs can be quite tight, try warming the engine up first.

Good idea on warming it first. I put the socket on them and had that gut feeling that the threads were coming along with the plug.

I'll have another bash at the weekend.

They're going to need to come out at some point.

But if you don't want to risk stripping the head, i'd leave them.

The car has been faultless for months, I was just going to check the condition of them but it seems like it may be more hassle than it's worth.

If they give too much resistance when I try at the weekend I'll not bother trying to remove them.

A normal ratchet will give you a feel of how tight they are, a breaker bar will remove them no problem but maybe along with the threads too ?

Socket fits over the new ones a treat but when I try and put on the old ones, it doesn't seem to be gripping. Is this the only size spark plug on 182's?

If so, is there a technique to it? seems a lot more complicated for me than usual spark plugs for some reason lol.

Shouldn't do, but I've never used that socket. I use the ones that have the rubber inside to protect the porcelain.

The 14mm refers to the thread size, not the actual head of it.

Got them out now, was a 16mm socket in the end meaning I got sent the wrong ones

Just ordered some more and after reading up on the horror stories, have gone for the NGK ones. Bosch supers have been removed and look a bit crusty tbf.

Yeh, deep one of course. Plugs are the recommended NGK PFR6E-10 3688 when they arrive (hopefully before Friday as I've got it in for MOT then and is currently in bits lol)
