standard clio radio

  CLS, RS MEG
Hi, just got my girlfriend a clio authentique. However the standard casette radio will not tune into radio stations. It will get radio 1, but is very faint. Ive wipped it out to have a look at the ariel plug, which is connected fairly well. It also turns itself off after 20 minutes despite the engine being on. I thought it does this only when you have not got the key in, like an auto off facility?

Any help?

OK had another look at it. The only way you can turn the radio on or off is via the red button on the unit. Starting the car up/ turning the car off via the ignition does not turn the radio off. Am i missing a switchable live of some sort?

i will eventually. Her clio hasnt got the centre display though, so im assuming a dynamique cd player wont work, or can i retrofit the display and plastic surround? Will the wires be there etc....

im sure theres a setting for the radio coming on/off with ignition, check the manual.

Is it just the standard ariel? i had probs at 1st with this, i unscrewed the roof areil it and cleaned the connection with wd40. it seemed to improve reception

it might help worth a go

Just go down Halfords or somewhere pick a CD player and they fit it all for you.

The clios have the steering controls which work with the renault cd player. For this to work with a halfrauds cd player i'd require a separate wire adpater. Anyway thats not my problem. I need to know how to get this working...

So does the rubber roof ariel unscrew? Ill give that a try mate. Ive browsed through the manual but it doesn't mention a different setting for on/off with igntion etc??? hmm will try and find out.

yea just unscrews.

ive noticed on mine if ive had the radio with out the ignition eg when cleaning , it doesnt come on when i start the engine i have to press the red button, have you tried switching it when the engines on then to see if it goes off when you take the key out after?

Check fuse mate, I had a similar problem and it was radio/cig lighter fuse.

I was thinking of checking the fuse mate, but thought id better leave it there, as we havn't got the radio code so dont want to lock it up.

take it the wiring that goes into the cassette player hasnt been tampered with? no home made connections etc?

have heard this before , like an auto off facility . as far as the radio side , its the ariel m8
the auto off thing imo is std thing , just check the wiring for a permanent live connection on the back

Sounds like the permanent and switched live are the wrong way round on the back. They are the red and yellow wires. Try swapping them over.

ditto,^^^^^^^^ i had to do it to my girls old corsa but they should be the normal way round in a clio, red to red yellow to yellow

The auto-power off thing defnitely sounds like the fuse. Don't be worried about diconnecting the radio as your fuse has alrady blown! Like the other guy said, it's the one or the cigarette lighter. One fool-proof way to test it is try using the cigarette lighter. Ponk it in and if the fuse has gone, the lighter won't heat up.
