Yeah i'm going to rip that boot lid off and throw it in the bin, f*cking thing drives me mental!!

It's actually the Powerflex exhaust mount that's to blame, bloody thing has zero flex in it so all the vibration goes through the cabin.

Been a while since I updated this thread, my poor Clio has been sat out the front for a couple of years since it started having electrical problems, it randomly cuts out and when started back up has the electrical fault light on the dash, the fuel gauge dies, it over fuels, stinks of petrol and it goes into limp mode.

Many things were wrong with it when scanned with Clip, like the signal from the pedal to throttle body wasn't the best so they were swapped with second hand parts, a load of fault codes vanished but it was still randomly cutting out and going into limp mode, last year it was compression tested and cylinder one has half the compression of the others, the spark plugs were fouled so they were changed and it ran a little smoother, but the HT leads were in a state so possible arching was suspected as the cause of the cutting out, but I just changed those today and on a little run round my estate it still cut out at a junction but this time no warning lights and no limp mode, but it did kill the fuel gauge for a bit but that came back after a while and it wasn't over fuelling, car's still rapid though despite all it's problems.

I'm not really looking for answers, just needed somewhere to put these terrible potato phone vids.

Does it die when it gets up to a certain temp or full temp, and then only start up and work fine again once cooled down?

It does it at all temperatures, then it won't do it for days, then it'll do it loads for a bit, then go back to being fine for a while, the fact it's still quick with no warning lights or limp mode leads me to think it's a short somewhere.

It also has a miss fire, I don't know if it's related.

Tbh I just can't trust it to not cut out, we've replaced the throttle body & accelerator, the injectors & fuel rail, the spark plugs, the HT leads, loads of relays, i'm starting to think that no matter how many problems we solve this cutting out issue will always be left, i'd need to use it for a whole summer in Cov with no problems before I took it near a motorway or a track.

You replaced all the earths mate? Given how cheap they are I’d replace all of em

Seeing everyone's Clio's last week at CSF made me miss mine so much I decided it needs to be resurrected, even with a f*cked engine it can't just sit there rotting.
(I also needed to weed the concrete)

Battery was utterly dead despite me charging it every month I had nothing but relay clicking, I had to jump it off the Golfs battery which to my relief fired it up instantly even with two year old fuel.

This engine is pretty much toast, everythings whiny, very tapperty it sounds like a sewing machine and I've previously found oil in the manifold on cylinder 1, when I compression tested it two years ago it had 130, 130, 130, 90, most of them seem to be down on cylinder 1, as @Krarl discovered when he tested the one I was meant to have, his was 180, 180, 180, 60, so simultaneously better and also worse somehow.

It cuts out randomly and sometimes goes into limp mode, sometimes not, then it struggles to start after its cut out, then it's over fueling with bore wash, so maybe lambda 1 related as one of the connectors had to rebuilt after it got ripped apart when the engine last came out being still plugged in, but there's never any fault codes and the live data always looked fine.

It also has a misfire despite new leads and spark plugs.

The cat sits on the roof to groom herself and uses it to jump over the fence so the bonnet and roof are covered on muddy paw prints.

Gave it a blast with a pressure washer to get rid of the leaves and cobwebs, then a good once over with some soapy turtle wax in a bucket.

I wasn't trying to get it spotless, just wash the moss and shite off it so it doesn't start to rust.

Yes I know I didn't do the wheels, I couldn't find the spray and alloys don't rust so b*llocks to it .

I had it up on axel stands and ran it through the gears to spin the rust off the discs, after an hour of that they were still rusty because it's sat for years, didn't get a photo of that because I'm thick and forgot .

Then tucked away until next week when I'll fire it up and drive it nowhere because if it cuts out it might not start again, I also saw the gearbox drip tray was bone dry, so the seal has either clogged up and stopped weeping, or it's all leaked out and the gearbox is empty.

Which brings me to the main reason I'm updating this thread, I need an engine, a provable compression tested engine, the options I've got are :

1. Buy a random engine for £250 - £1000, total lottery as none of them come with a provable compression test.

2. Buy another Clio for under £2k, not that I have £2k to spunk on another Clio atm, swap the engine and maybe the box and have an entire car of spares leftover, but without testing the engine I could be buying another headache that's down on compression, I doubt anyone would be happy with me removing their inlets, unplugging the coil and testing every cylinder on their driveway, storage is also an issue with a third car.

3. Get mine rebuilt, I have no idea what's actually wrong with it so it would need a complete tear down so see if it's even saveable, I'm thinking a minimum of new piston rings, assuming the cylinders aren't scored, a complete head rebuild with the block skimmed, that's before buying new belts pullys, tensioners, aircon delete kit to replace my pikey setup, I have no idea how much all that will cost but I suspect it would be cheaper to just buy another car.

So in short has anyone got an engine that isn't a heap of sh*t?

I do have another engine at work but I've no way of compression testing it

I could do a leak down test if someone has a tester. It apparently came out of a 90k car. Not sure how much I believe it but I was gonna use it to rebuild

But now I have that one with low comp on #1 to rebuild

Mine was still rapid even with a f*cked engine, even today once it was up to temp the engine ran a lot smoother, other than the misfire.

I'm starting to think after 20 years they're all f*cked unless you spent £5k on a nice one.
