UPDATE:

Again no progress on the car, more in life...
As previously mentioned I was moving house. After spending a fair while at the wife's family farm we were heading back to my neck of the woods - the west country.
We moved a couple of weeks ago and are pretty straight already and despite the garage still needing a lot of work to get it to how I want it at least it is now not full of boxes and bubblewrap, that meant there was space for a car...

Although I felt lucky I still had somewhere where I could work on the car and store it out of the elements I was pretty pleased to get out of the pigeon homed barn

As I was moving back to the west-country I have been chatting with long lost friends, some of which are old timers from this very forum. Superfastdan has been someone I have known for quite a while, for those of you that don't know who that is, @Daniel has been around these parts for some time, he also is a very nice guy and has access to a flatbed vehicle. After not seeing each other for almost 10 years we spent Friday morning together, drove a 200 mile round trip and collected the clio from the farm,

The move went spot on, without a hitch and we delivered the car to the new house. I had to do some moving around of vehicles on the drive so only had chance to grab this shot of it abandoned on a footpath, but the car is now in the double garage...

Looking forward to getting started on it again, then early next year will be MOT and tax time, geo set-up and then probably a trackday at Castle Combe for a shakedown. (Updates will happen before then).

UPDATE
It is about time there was some progress on this. Literally nothing has happened on it since I moved, been a bit busy with decorating and childcare.
But the start of 2021 has kick-started me a little, there are a few little jobs that need doing to line it up for an MOT in spring so I need to get on and sort them.

First up was a Demon Tweeks order. For an MOT it needs a fog light. I ordered the Lifeline fog/rain light, the wiring is already in place so when it turns up I hopefully just need to make a mount and wire it in. I am going to mount it centrally, high up inside the rear window, hopefully this should be alright. The car also needs a rear view mirror so in the same order with DT I order the Pitking wide angle rear view mirror. I ordered these back on the 5th..... still waiting 13 days later.

A bit of a stickler is the front single wiper. For some reason the Storm wiper conversion kit blew the original motor so I was considering my options and made the decision a few weeks back after speaking a fair bit with @robzracing (inspired by his mount below)

IMG_8896.jpg

I decided to go for the Laguna MK2 rear wiper motor, it is nice and small and in comparison is compact and light. (see below)

IMG_4134.jpg

I now just need to figure out how to get it mounted up. The spindle is a fair bit longer but I have taken measurements for that. I first up wanted to get a template of where the spindle sat in relation to the mount holes so some CAD (cardboard aided design) was brought in.

IMG_4135.jpg

With this I could then start figuring out the placement of the motor. It looks like it is only just going to fit, but this is without any cutting/ grinding of the bodywork which is ideal obviously as it is in paint.

IMG_4138.jpg

Placement could work out really well. But I think I am going to need to look at mounting it 'underslung' from the mount. To get the right length of spindle and to sit the motor in a place it will fit it needs to be underneath the mounting plate. I was initially thinking a plate of ally to make up the difference but I am now thinking a thinner but nice and strong plate and some spacers back up to the mount, that could work really well and also allow me to remove the motor from the mount or the whole lot together from the car.

IMG_4136.jpg

I also need to figure out the wiring as my loom has 2 wires and the wiper 3...

Talking of wiring and power, I went to start the car yesterday and it wasn't playing ball, it would crank but not start, a couple pops and gunshots but no start.
I think I am out of fuel (not easy to tell without a gauge (out to sort that), but in trying to start it I think I then drained the battery despite it being constantly sat on trickle.

Bit concerned though as the dash was showing some funny readouts, almost like it had reset itself. I am hoping this is down to low battery voltage and not something more sinister. Next steps are to get some fuel and leave it on charge again for a little bit.

UPDATE:

The car has been sat on charge since sunday and is now showing decent voltage in the battery. Concerned it could of been a lack of fuel I stuck 10ltrs of Esso supreme in there. Knowing that it had fuel and the battery was good I looked at turning the car on.

Power was good, but the fan or the fuel pump weren't kicking in. I checked fuses and they were all good.... except the main ECU power fuse, this had blown.
This would explain the incorrect readouts on the dash and the fuel pump and fan not kicking in at all.

This is pretty much a brand new ECU thats only really been stressed when mapping so I am quite concerned and upset this has happened. I will be contacting Specialist Components in the morning, hopefully they can help me out.

UPDATE:

Have spoken with SCS Delta today (that is the company that split from Specialist Components) and they think it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
They think that a track has burnt on the ECU circuit board. They think that when the main feed to the ECU peeked and blew the fuse it would have then tried feeding the 12v through the ignition feed and that would be when the board would have burnt. I need to post the ECU back and hopefully it is a £50 repair.

If the car not starting is down to lack of fuel, and this has happened because of that I really need to add a fuel gauge to monitor this.
I am wondering about mounting a small fuel gauge at the fuel pump in the rear, would anyone have any suggestions on the style to go for?

UPDATE:

The ECU has been removed and packaged up and is on the way to SCS Delta.
I also had a package from Demon Tweeks turn up, my rear view mirror and my rain light.

Seems to be some price variations in the mirrors but went for the cheapest as couldn't really see there being many differences in them.

IMG_4185.jpg

It needed 2 pieces of cut inner tube wrapped with loom tape to buffer the brackets, but it seems to fit well, it is also maxed out at the angle so will have to do, I guess it is only there to make it road legal.

I started to look at the brackets for the rain light as I had some metal brackets (from somewhere) but I then looked at a piece of ally right angle and a carbon piece and it is far far lighter so it will be made out of the latter - won't be seeing that anyways.

Little progress, but progress is progress.

Spend some time getting the mirror in the right place. In my blue cup I could see all round the car, back window and both rear quarters easily. Hardly used the wing mirrors on track days 👍🏻

I did try but really couldn't get the drivers quarter.... perhaps I need to move the mirror along the bar closer to the drivers side.

These mirrors need to be the flat type rather than rounded/convex etc or its not good for track work as it distorts the distance of following cars etc.

UPDATE:

Well the ECU was returned to SCS Delta, fixed* and then returned to me at the tail end of last week.
I checked through the car, the battery is back up to full strength, it now has 10ltrs of fuel, the coolant was topped up and all fuses checked prior to plugging the ECU back into the car.

The ECU was plugged back in and still nothing, no coolant fan starting up and no priming of the fuel pump. I checked the relays but they are all good, I then also checked power to the ECU and that is all good.

I have spoken with SCS again and they think the repair hasn't been completed properly which is frustrating so that means the ECU is coming back out and being posted back to them again....

UPDATE

The ECU has been and now come back from SCS Delta. They confirmed that the repair was good, however they were very apologetic as neither of the team there had reloaded my calibration back to the ECU. My calibration was reloaded and the ECU was posted back to me, along with a CAN-USB cable back as I thought this may come in useful in the future.

Tonight I had chance to re-attach the ECU to the car and power up the car and ECU but have not attempted to start it yet (too late and the little lads in bed).

When I powered up the ECU I the fuel pump primed, however the fan did not (I am now questioning myself on whether it did before).

I also found that although the Dash2 is displaying better (more realistic) figures some of these are still incorrect. Quite frustrating

UPDATE

Note from the last post is that the dash is not displaying better figures, so that is still an issue.

I undone the fuel line today and primped the pump with the ECU, this confirmed that the engine would receive fuel. I re-attached the line and then attempted to start the car.

The car started, which is a positive I guess but is running extremely lumpy and for some reason now only on 3 cylinders. It also appears that the fuel line is weaping where I re-attached it.

So frustrating.

Take the plugs out and check to see if they’ve fouled at all. May just need a clean that’s all.

Also, ever thought that maybe, just maybe, this car hates you? 😂😂

I am beginning to think that way yeah mate, it felt like I was all sorted and now seem to be going backwards. Sale thoughts are starting to circle.

I was just about to start looking into logical next steps regarding the 3 cylinders as I know coils and leads are common issues.

It would seem it is related to the previous cranking and now ECU, but I have no idea at present.

Well before you decide to sell up, there’s a few things to try first 👍🏻

Checking leads/plugs/coilpack is easy enough to check. Next one is how old are the injectors? Worth remembering that essentially it’s all just old s**t now if it’s the original items.

Drop me a WhatsApp if you need a bit of guidance mate 👍🏻

UPDATE

I am quite shocked and extremely disappointed writing this, but also hopeful.
I have not been back out to the car but am trying to prep/work through things in my head to understand what the issue might be.

Speaking with SCS Delta today it has become apparent that they uploaded the calibration file from my old Typhoon ECU (that was fitted prior to this Delta 400). I was not made aware of this and have basically had to find it out from them. This shouldn't of damaged my engine but should I have been turbo'd or Supercharged it could be a different story. This is after they sent my ECU back to me the first time with no calibration on at all.....

Hopefully once I get the correct calibration back onto it it will sort the communication with the dash, not sure it will sort the 3 cylinders.... we will see.

Need to check the fuel line too, try and stop that weeping

UPDATE

Had a call and remote access time with SCS today where we uploaded my calibration back onto the ECU.
When this was uploaded they checked the readings and confirmed that all looked good on that.

The car primed the fuel pump and ran the fan, then started although soon cut out again and shut everything down, I immediately thought it had done a fuse again but after checking them all I then attempted to start it again. It started all good and ran on all cylinders.

There was a fair bit of popping but I guess this may have been blowing through the system after running it dry previously.
All seems a bit more positive again and at least I don't have to investigate a 3-cylinder issue.

Next up though is my oil pressure and temp readings which still don't seem right.

-13 oil pressure could be that the pins need swapping? Or the sensor has just given up on life😂

Good to see its running now, must be a massive weight off your shoulders

Nothing on the loom has been touched since this recent issue has happened so it will either be as you and someone else has suggested a duf sensor or could possibly be the incorrect dash cal.

i am going to re-upload the dash cal just to make sure again now that the ecu cal is right.

As you say though it is very much a weight off again.

UPDATE

Have had some time on the car again tonight and managed to get a few things done.

First up was to look at the dash again and double check it had the right calibration. It does. With literally no idea what this could be it means a call with Race technology, hopefully they can shed some light.

Next up I sorted the weeping fuel line, that just needed a bit more of a nip up.

Lastly was to mount and wire up the rear rain/fog light. I had previously made the mount up using carbon and some ally right angle, I did have some other mounts but the carbon/ally approach was significantly lighter. I also had the loom already in place as I planned this a little while ago.

I went with the Lifeline light as they seemed to have very good reviews against the other cheaper brands, I don’t want to buy twice.

As with any holes I put in the car these are drilled, painted and then used to try and prevent and corrosion.

Light mounted up.

Loom completed and neatly run with P-clips.

and tested...

Another nice little job completed.
Just the wiper to sort now before the MOT but ideally don’t want to go anywhere before the oil readings are right.

Also started to look at how I might wire in a fuel gauge...

Glad you're not though mate, see too many track car projects get cancelled and owners chuck the towel in when complex wiring and digital dashboards are involved. They seem a f**k load of hassle for next to nothing to me but fair play going for it and even fairer play seeing it through!

UPDATE:

I had some time with the guys from Race Technology late last week where they would remote into the dash/car and we went through a number of things.
We couldn't find anything that was untoward, but we did think it may be beneficial to update the Dash software. This was done and it seemed to sort some of the readings, however some were still way out.

Race Technology decided it may be best to have the Dash and Can back to make sure similar hadn't happened to them as did the ECU, so here we are....
No dash again

I'll await to hear back, but will try and make forward steps with the wiper now...

UPDATE:

I feel like the car is really testing me. I felt so close but now I feel like I am certainly going backwards.
I heard back from Race Technology this week who initially said that they could find no issue with the dash. I had quite a long discussion with them about it and it was going to be on its way back to me, and then I received an email yesterday:

After our phone discussion, I had another look at the DASH2 and CAN Adaptor just to make sure the analogue inputs were behaving as expected. I found an issue with all the inputs, the values do not change on-screen no matter what voltage I feed into the inputs. Myself and another technician have spent the best part of the day on the unit and have identified multiple components that need replacing. Unfortunately the components in question are no longer manufactured anymore due to their age, we called quite a few vendors but we cannot find the components we need for sale. So we’re stuck with a broken 11 year old dash I’m afraid, it needs replacing.

They mentioned that these items were probably damaged by again too much voltage, this only leads me to believe it was the cranking (whilst potentially empty of fuel) the other week may have done it, basically the same thing that happened to the ECU...

So I am in a situation where I now need a new dash, and they aren't particularly cheap.
I am finding this really frustrating and in the last 24hrs I'll admit I am having serious considerations about the car. However I did have a dream last night that the car was getting dismantled and I didn't seem that happy about it, so perhaps that is saying something.

:(

I wouldn't dismantle the car when you're so close, but I think I would be considering other dash options to be honest, as this has been a bit ridiculous to be honest.

Why can’t you use a standard dash? What the fascination with a fancy one?

unless I’ve been out for a particularly long stint and am conscious of fuel, I can’t recall ever looking at my dash on a track day. Wouldn’t see it through the red mist anyway.

fit an oil/water gauge, rev counter, USB powered speedo and crack on and do some track days.

As above sack of the Race Technology dash. I don’t think I’ve heard many good things.
most of the time it’s people selling them “due to an upgrade”

There are plenty of other options but as you say not cheap. But at least it’s fit forget and enjoy the car. :)

I am pretty sure the easiest thing at this point is to fit another Dash2. The car has a fully custom loom in it that is perfect and is wired up to connect to a Dash2. I think if I was to look at a different dash I would need to look at the loom and in all honesty that scares the bejesus out of me.

Race Technology have offered me a new Dash2 and Can at a discounted rate, I have my old calibration to upload straight to it so that should be easy.
I will need to remove some of the previous wiring I added to the loom for the 5v regulator as the newer Dash2's have this built in.
Whilst I am doing that I think I am going to wiring the Dash2 up for the fuel gauge as I believe this will be simpler, I may even have a Dash2 calibration for that.

I am trying to look at it more positively, if I can understand what I am doing with the wiring I think mentally that will be half the battle

That's fair enough but, if the new dash doesn't solve the issues, I'd be wanting that money right back from them, and I'd want it confirmed before you pay for it. Would be a proper PITA if you buy a new one and it goes wrong immediately!

I am in good/constant communications with Race Technology so will be very much 'on it' if this doesn't go to plan.

I have been trying to work out this morning what I need to do wiring wise, the least amount of cutting the better, it is a shame to keep breaking this loom and obviously that isn't best for diagnosing future issues.

UPDATE:

Well this has been a little while in the making but progress is progress and I actually think this is the last thing to be sorted before it is ready for its MOT.
Those that follow the thread will know I had a bit of an issue with the single wiper a while ago, because of that I approached it in a different way.

After looking over @robzracing thread/build the laguna rear wiper seemed a really good execution, so I got myself one of those and looked at how I was going to fit it.

Obviously being from a completely different vehicle and for the rear the mounts were massively off, I didn't fancy chopping the shell (as its all in paint) like Rob did so worked out a different approach.

With the help of some thought out, cut and re-cut CAD (cardboard aided design) I had my template.
It needed to sit deep enough away from the original mount to sit the spindle in the same position. I also needed to work out the perfect position for the 5 bolts (2 to the original mount points, 3 for the wiper itself).

IMG_4686.JPG

IMG_4688.JPG

After checking the position of this with the plastic trim and then also the sweep of the wiper on the screen (a dusty screen helps for this), the template was then transfered to some 8mm Aluminium plate.

IMG_4722.JPG

IMG_4684.JPG

IMG_4720.JPG

The plate is lovely and light but sturdy enough not to flex so perfect for this application. It is also really easy to cut/drill and pretty cheap so perfect for DIY mounts/fabrication like this. The plate was cut/drilled, test fitted... To get the depth I needed I also ordered some stand-off spacers and put these on the plate to original mount bolts.

IMG_4723.JPG
IMG_4724.jpg

All looked good on the test fit so all was removed and tarted up before re-assembling back to the car.
