Thanks guys, as you can see the car is a real passion of mine. I often think of selling to aid mine and the mrs house deposit. Then I get reactions like this and think how could I ever part with her. She's not for sale at the mo, if she is ill keep you posted :)

Bed time now but I'll be back on tomorrow to answer any questions about her and maybe a couple more pics

Just jad had a look through them, the white type r seems nice at face value and that first RA is just round the corner from me although I have never seen it about, looks rough in the pics though and chavy to me.

That lads spent some time on his RA, I'm guilty if doing similar with my cars but not quite to that extent, my cars get bought to drive. The RA's front bumper are really not my thing, I would have to change that or just buy a type r.

Do you know if the DCCD came in all the type R's and RA's?

I've spent a lot of time and money on mine and its extremely clean but believe me I use it. Mine is running around 310bhp. This may not seam all that much compared to other evos and imprezas out there. But coupled with the gearbox is a total nutter on the road. The version 2 Sti Ra has the shortest gearbox. The version 3 has slightly longer ratios.

Youve chosen some nice cars there mate

Taken from that list above

this car is owned by Max a dealer down in Bedford who I bought a car from many moons ago, this particular car I saw only a few weeks ago and it's a real straight car. Max is a decent guy and generally has half decent motors in stock

This car belongs to David O brian from Api engines. By all accounts it's a good car. Api are probably one of the best transmission specialists out there

This car belonged to my best friend from 2 streets away and was a nice honest car. He bought it on the back of. Having a drive of mine! Had some good parts on it and was a cracking fast road car. It is now sold unfortunately

this car belongs to a another friend of mine. Simon has done a great job with the car, it was actually
Quite shabby when he first bought it, he's put plenty of time and money in and he's got a nice car out of it.

if you are interested in getting an impreza I can't reccommend an Ra enough. This is my 4th one and by far my best.
bide your time, good cars are out there

A mint example like above, anything up to 5k
I'll keep you in mind mate, but no disrespect but I'll be looking for a lot more than 5k.

The one I mentioned earlier that my best mate sold, that went for £4300 and that was a decent car. Not mint, Mint imprezas are very very few and far between.

Cheers for that, the STI type R sounds ideal as I love the 2 door cars, I wouldn't want to spend too much on it as it would just be a summer car to have some fun, have a laugh on a few track days and sell on. Are you saying the DCCD boxes only came in some of the type R's and RA's? Would you say 6-7k could get a tidy enough one (serviceable things like belts etc doesn't matter as I'll do them myself) and have change to do a few tweeks to the suspension and a little more power if it doesn't already have it (circa 330)

You lost me on these.... CBD (closed deck block??) and FHI?!?.

Fuji Heavy Industries

Subarus are a mine feild but ill try and explain block differences..

The Subaru block comes in 3 flavours....Closed Deck, Open deck and Semi closed deck. Some pre 96 cars(mainly series 1 cars and all RA's) came with the CDB, it was the cost of individually casting each block the reason Subaru decided to end the production of the CDB and use ODB's. The ODB is used in all other classics including V3-V6 WRX and STI's including Type R's and RA's. ODB's are also used in 2001-on WRX's but 2001-on STI's got a stronger Semi closed deck block....Don't even ask about the 2.5 block found in 2006-on cars...lol

Here are some photos of the three blocks...

Do you know if the DCCD came in all the type R's and RA's?

No....The Pre 96 WRX RA's doesn't doesn't have DCCD neither does Version 3/4/5/6 WRX WRX RA's including WRX V-Limited's and WRX Limited's. There are also versions of the Type R that doesn't have DCCD, again they are WRX Type R V-Limited's and WRX Type R Limited's.....Basically speaking the STI version of the Type R and RA does have DCCD but the WRX version of both cars do not.

The version 2 Sti Ra has the shortest gearbox.

All pre 96 RA's (WRX and STI) have the same gear ratios its the FD that differs, 4.1 for MY93 and MY94 cars 3.9 for MY95 and MY96 cars.....making the former the lowest geared Imprezas.

Which version classic did they consider to be the best?

Apart from the 22b, there is a story(im not sure if its true) that the Subaru techs say that the Version 3 STI is the best version because it was the first car that STI took away and were allowed to do what they wanted to it....The pre 96 STI's are WRX's taken from the production line and lightly sprinkled with some STI goodies hence why they share model codes, unlike the V3/4/5 and 6 STI variants.

IMO, In terms of equipment, the MY99-00 Sti's are best, they come with a quick-rack and Helical LSD.....Believe it or not, apart from the 22B this is probably the finest Classic...The S201

Its a mine field with these things but basically get a late STI type R if I want a 2 door with DCCD, the strongest engine available in the later cars (semi closed) and they have a quick rack and LSD.

Next question do the later cars 4 pots and 2 pots just swap over?

Total mine field...lol

They are not semi closed, all post 96 Classics have ODB's.....The block only comes into play north 500bhp.

Yes the later cars do have Subaru's own 4pots and 2 pots....The good thing about the later cars is the Brembos from 2001-2005 STI's bolt straight on the hubs, no need for caliper brakets or bigger handbrake shoes.

Ah okay so the engine is irrelevant for the average joe.

Yeah that's what I was suggesting the Brembos, seen a few cars with them retro fitted. So you stay with the classic discs and hoses or you take the 01-05 stuff.

I could look but since your here, what is there to look out for on the DCCD boxes (is there fancy electronic/hydraulic wizadry going on in there like the evo's or just a simple change between 60/40 to 40/60 or similar?)

My mate had what we thought was an input bearing noisy and then the bottom end go on his P1 which I'm guessing is the stud/nut rods. We never stripped it and he sold it on. It was around 450-500 with standard internal mapped by AF, it had anti lag and launch which were used frequently in the month or so it lasted.

The DCCD has its own ecu which is controlled via a roller switch located by the handbrake. There is a display indicator in the speedo binnacle which shows 6 settings, from Open diff to Locked diff. The Open setting is used for everyday driving, right up to Lock for slippery surfaces. There are a couple of aftermarket DCCD controllers which can fine tune to almost infinite settings, not that ive used one.

Nice bit of info there jay, I also agree that equipment wise the later Sti's is the one to have. Mine is very basic, which is partly one of the reasons I love it. I've had stis 2345 and a ukmy00 and I really like the very early preface lift cars but they are really rare to get hold of. You mentioned the quickrack being available on all cars from 96? Do you mean the quick rack or the optional extra quick rack at 2.2 turns lock to lock, this is what is fitted to my car.

With these cars it's imperative that you buy a good chassis because they rot for fun. I've always found them to be ultra reliable when looked after

A hell of a lot of car for the money.....I think i may of said this before, the Bug STI is pound for pound the best Impreza you can buy!

Jay, Could you tell me the differences between a Blob STI and Bug STI?

If I was to get one(A Bug), would it be a sacrilege to swap the rear bumper for a blob bumper?

There is really bugger all difference mechanically in UK versions but in JDM versions the blob has dccd and is twin scroll. The seats in the bug sti are slightly different and IMO, they feel better.
Many people fit the blob rear bumper and lights to freshen up the rear end, some people only fit the rear lights which look ok from a distance and its only when you look close you can see no light recess....

Sacrilege? Its only a bloody Impreza fella ;)

I considered white ones but I think the black carries it off well against the black wheels and mudflaps, all in my humble opinion lol
