THE INTERNET IS USELESS WITHOUT GOOGLE.

FFS.
Google will not work on ANY browser.
Every other site works fine if the address is input into the browser itself, but Google won't work. Nor will searching into the address bar of Chrome.

Any ideas? I'm on the verge of insanity/throwing the pc out of the window/drinking coffee.

I had a virus the other day which did the exact opposite.

It set all browsers to run through a proxy, set to a port the fake antivirus used. So only google and banking websites worked.

are you working from home or at work? the tech guys may have blocked google to encourage you to do work rather than scan the internet :p if this is the case you can get round it by going to www.hidemyass.com this site is a proxy and will allow you to search sites not allowed by the network administrator. i used to use it for looking at facebook at work.

There are plenty of other possibilities for google not working but the result of this will give us some info to work with.

my last work only let us search around 10 websites but because we were all computer genius's we quickly found ways around the blocks put in place, dumping the safari.plist for example and even writting an address in the address bar then dragging the address and dropping it into the opened help window!! trying blocking that lol (only works on mac)

Out IT dept are all above 55.
Their stance is that we ALL have to use IE (I use chrome) and their contact details are as follows.

If you have an issue with emails - please email us
If you have an issue with your phone - please call us on 2366

I put the form in to have my phone connected (their end) 5 weeks ago. I'm still phoneless
You get the idea.

  Rusty Cup
then they thought they had got clever by locking the delete history but oh we can just dump the history.plist in the bin employee 1 employer 0 lol

i feel your pain as ive been there in past jobs, but there are usually ways around blocks put in place. but do you think its been blocked or its an actual technical issue?

  E87 118d M Sport
looks like a technical issue. others that work here arent having problems.
and blocking google would need an ounce of techincal knowledge. something the dept dont have.
we did get upgraded to office 2007 the other day mind.

Hmmm so if its local to your computer and only effecting google it can only be a software issue within the browser ive not used chrome much but in ie i would just go to tools/internet options/hit delete under the browsing history section then keep all the options ticked and hit delete. then i would restart the computer for good measure. is your machine a desktop or laptop? you could try moving to someones desktop pluggin in their ethernet and if it still wont search google then it can literlaly only be your browser at fault.

You'd be surprised what can constitute a sacking for gross misconduct ;)

they were impressed with our ingenuity but yes in theory it was a sackable offence.

I can think of 3 or 4 ways of blocking that off of the top of my head :rasp:

Anyway, back to the issue at hand.

goto a command prompt.

type
ping www.google.com

you should get a reply something like:
Code:
C:\Windows\system32>ping www.google.com

Well you're resolving googles address fine, so that's not the issue.

try this
Code:
telnet www.google.com 80
this will load up into a blank screen, then type
Code:
GET /index.html
(this will not appear on the screen as you type it)

You should get a result like:

Code:
HTTP/1.0 302 Found
