  Clio Sport 182
The car started life as a standard Australian delivered 182 non-cup purchased so I could get out on the track and improve my skills. Pretty much as soon as I got it I semi-stripped the interior, put in some AST’s, added a race seat, ED cams, lightweight wheels and dz03’s along with the other peripherals that go along with a basic setup (pads, camber bolts, bushes etc).

After a few track days I had the bug and decided to put a diff in along with a helix clutch, lightweight flywheel, decat and ktec intake. I decided that a gripper was the way to go along with a shorter pinion and crown-wheel. I was in the UK for work so loaded up the suitcase.

Around this time my wife had also moved her business into a new office so I decided the office should have a workshop attached to it in which I could do some spannering (my neighbours had endured enough of me working in the apartment garage!). Moved my tools in and I pulled the engine in preparation to install the new goodies.

I also decided to strip a little more of the interior.

While at it I removed the ABS, installed a 4 port master cylinder, hardlines and a bias valve.

Next came a lightweight screen heater having removed all the factory parts.

I also thought some cold air ducting would assist so gutted a couple of headlights and installed a vent.

With everything installed and all tar removed I painted the interior.

Decided a cage would be a good idea so had this installed - 6 point national spec cage.

Welded up an exhaust for a little more bark and also welded in a pure motorsport bearing kit on the front wishbones.

At this point, fully loaded with the cage the car weighed in at 931kg.

Time to get on track.

After a bunch of fun days out I had an issue - finding 3rd instead of 5th down the main straight had catastrophic consequences with the gearbox and clutch being destroyed and one of the mount lugs on the block being torn off!

I started thinking about what I should do & I could not get the idea of putting a 225 engine and box in out of my head. I scoured everywhere but could not find anyone who had successfully done this in a Clio 2 (this was 2013) so I bit the bullet and bought a written off Meg.

With no reference I thought I would lift the engine in and see how it fit. To my surprise it pretty much dropped in, with only a slight notch in the chassis rail required for the gearbox.

Decided the engine needed a little more support so went about making a front and rear dogbone and mount.

Thought a proper pedal box was the way to go (also needed a hydraulic mc for the clutch) so bought a wilwood pedal box with adjustable bias and tilton master cylinders and made up a plate to go in the factory location.

Sent the engine for building with a bunch of new bits for the inside (rods, pistons, bearings etc). Retained the clio head as I heard it may flow a little better.

Needed a cam signal to run sequential injection/ignition so installed one.

A new intake manifold was required - this was a good opportunity to learn a few more skills so bought a tig welder and went about making something up. Unfortunately most of the photos of this have gone AWOL.

It was time to bolt the turbo on - running a log manifold I put it all together.

With the engine back in I welded up some 2.5 inch intake piping. Also had a new fuel rail made up with a return and installed.

I was pleasantly surprised that the tuner got the car running and it all worked! Ended up making 345hp at the wheels running 22psi.

Before heading to the track I finished up the interior and put a racecapture unit in running a tab dash (very cool bit of kit!).

I read a lot about roll centre adjustment on here so made up some lower control arm ends and pins.

I took the car out on track a few times. Everything worked as expected and it was a hoot to drive. Unfortunately I had an issue. When I took the head off this is what I saw.

zs2n_zh0vgZ62bhapL9Q-G1MuUQZ26cl_ySvi0lNFqRuMAN0fKJg_puMNV-Ce8mHbntmLPiaA9UVXaK9etxVFOzhBEXaUpnl.png

So while the engine was off getting rebuilt I decided a brake upgrade was needed.

Ordered some 325mm 2 piece discs (compared with clio and scenic discs).

Y2wE3L5wyIPIEGa1FcnI4TElmP5hUKyD4_cW7HOEn8lYtycMC0lbGTBrN5k37VXEDGVRoO80yTcK3_7M-YBqXM4A_pjsgRnA.png

And some Alcon calipers (this was the largest setup I could get under a 16). I machined up some mounting brackets and made up some lines and got them installed.

With the engine back I went about getting it in. Having decided to move to E85 I upgraded the lift and main pump and also put some 1500cc bosch injectors in.

And the initial result was 386hp at the wheels.

e8asmXYlpEtSLAM0Wi3Iq-HQULvNkScNCnyjcMdUUFxCH2yPG9GQaPnzfmDmpx-zgqomV-revBBcn2MaYWkZdB7pmg1qFy_3.png

After some more work we landed at 399hp at the wheels.

317cb6Uo0ovRvJCTPdrX-UuwQrP2PpTbukgibcO-a3au_w_3f1LhWfp_VhTs54AIRqiuM3xL1wtZo6g7M4j3wPm9PMrDQF4V.png

Decided to try some slicks in an attempt to get more traction.

XkO-f5uhDlxhaUOT5lGUKa9EIaalKrIwUM4DMVY7vmEnTAsHD99itJIUc5ONwDmy9CDExUkLu6QXoHXH7pQ3mYLVwroGkv53.png

After a few more days on track I decided to install some PMS rear beam bearings.

KTP-Ew5X3nnIiuVM_6hiJlVJnQl86Xm8iAYfZ_1PH6P5S5RLHrDrYo_8JJnmnD1zdmj_HAUU-mwYG9gYVpC46pcIjeEFDbE9.png

Then after a couple more days out I decided I needed more grip. The slicks just were not doing it so after some research I decided to emulate the FWD time attack cars. 255’s on the front and 225’s on the rears. The guards required a little work to fit.

YeHIbNCTKz0cK6SCF3TZxqGpQqgx3Z-04QtQ-UjZtosNWu9Lo8lDwF50jdSjHJDn5SUfWSh1Y0g8qq6ZyjyW-w3U23WGiXRm.png

Also added a splitter on the front. Amazed how much difference it made.

zEQJsIiXS3O7xbWVYnImEO5mbXTeN48ezN1JAQOQGRlb5ehtDOCBfUukio2_mR5qimLa2yENW60As82mDkfugQNfjodwBIEO.png

At this stage, with the car pretty sorted I decided it needed the looks to match the go. So, after a lot of work making it fit I put a s1600 kit on and added some 255’s on the rears to match the fronts (and some spacers between the rear beam and hubs to get it wide enough). Front inner guards required some cutting and welding as did the rear.

With the kit on I decided that Glacier White was the colour I wanted so I sent it off for paint. And this is how it came back.

And with everything bolted on ready to go.

With the big rubber on it is surprisingly manageable. Before it was tough and I was seriously considering going back to a built n/a engine.
"The Missile" makes sense now!

Brilliant job on the car. However, I think the office having a workshop was a stroke of genius
Yep, agreed - having the tools and space made the project much more pleasant.
Wht a bloody fantastic build this is!

I'm rather jealous! Although, I'm not jealous at the bank balance you've lost creating this stroke of perfection!

Quality
Cheers! I look at is as an investment in my sanity and pleasure. I spend a fair amount of time working so the mental health gained from building and driving this thing helps keep me able to do that. I have never added up what it cost (and never will!) but doing the work yourself definitely saves a lot - regardless of what other cars I have I can see that this thing will always have a home with me.

Not sure how to edit posts on here but the wheels are in fact 17x9's.

Impressive!

399bhp at the wheels! What's that at the flywheel, 450?
Something around there! Was a handful on 205's but much more manageable on 255's now. Actually makes me think about more power!

Wow some amazing home spannering on that, congratulations sir! You need to get a camera fitted so we can see how it goes on track.
Cheers! Should be out next Thursday and Friday so will try get some footage then.

If anyone wants to mount a seat nice and low - effectively an inverted version of the OMP mount which goes down in the middle instead of up on the outside.

That explains the weather in the photos! I'm guessing there's not too much to be improved upon, so build updates will be minimal? Have you got any more photos of the roll center mod?

Haha, yeah, it's a nice part of the world!

Control arms are about 40mm wider than stock and also shift wheel further forward (more caster). A little over engineered but better that than a failure!

Bolts are not threaded into the hubs. No issues thus far but will consider if required.

Oh, and I'd like to think it is getting close to done but I am sure there are a bunch of things I will come up with!

Video from today at Wakefield Park.

Got black flagged for 96bd. Quick trip to the exhaust shop and I was back with a new resonator and just over 90db! Also collapsed another rear bearing - have ordered the upgrade stub axle/disc/bearing from PMS. Ordered their rear beam stiffening and sway bar while I was at it!

Great video, sounds and looks like it's bouncing around a lot loosing traction? What settings are the dampers on?
