Bloody rather exciting I must say! Even if it's not the Fiesta RS the petrolhead world is hoping for i'm sure it'll be a good car.

A hot 180bhp Ford Fiesta ST will go on sale late next year to battle the Renaultsport Clio 200 and Seat Ibiza Cupra.

The hot Fiesta will give Ford a welcome road car spin-off from its S2000 rally car and WRC programme, which has switched from the Focus to the Fiesta this year.

The go-ahead will also come as a major relief for fans of fast Fords because the project has hung in the balance for several years while Ford has struggled to justify the investment.

At the heart of the new front-drive ST will be a 1.6-litre Ecoboost turbo engine, the same basic unit that powers the four-wheel-drive Fiesta WRC car.

The ST will use a 180bhp version of the Ecoboost, most likely mated to a six-speed manual transmission, although the ratios may be changed to produce a sportier drive.

There’s no word on performance yet, but the 197bhp Renaultsport Clio 200 achieves 0-62mph in 6.9sec and 141mph. In giving away nearly 20bhp, the Fiesta ST may struggle to match the Clio.

Prices are still to be decided, although there are indications that the ST may start from around £16,500, sufficient to undercut the stripped-out Clio Cup by £300 and the higher-spec Clio 200 by £1300.

The launch timing, at the end of 2012, will coincide with the Fiesta’s mid-life refresh, which will bring mild styling tweaks and readjusted specs and trim.

Ford is testing the water for the ST with a limited-edition warm Fiesta, the S1600, announced last month. Just 500 examples of the 134bhp 1.6-litre, naturally aspirated S1600 will be built. It is priced from £15,895.
While the Fiesta might be level-pegging on power, it has one big advantage – it weighs a lot less. Take the Fabia vRS as an example – it weighs 1,318 kg and offers 136 bhp/ton.

Now the current Fiesta Zetec S weighs 1,045 kg, so let’s speculate and say that the Fiesta ST will tip the scales at 1,100 kg. That would work out at 163 bhp/ton, a big difference.

Then there’s the Renaultsport Clio 200 to consider.

The extra 20bhp of the Clio’s 2.0-litre engine should tip the balance in its favour, but the turbocharged Fiesta will have more torque and also undercuts the weight of its French rival by over 100kg. The Clio Cup works out with a minimal advantage at 166 bhp/ton, so the Fiesta ST could be much more competitive than the power figures might suggest.

Indeed, not sure weather it'll be succesful moving to Turbo but there's only one way to find out.

I'm sure that's why people are talking about Renault having to Turbo their next R.S. model.

to be fair, I bet that'll be mighty tunable come a year or two...mmm,....jesus christ - I'm actually quite relishing over a fiesta. Times are changin'

One trip to Montune and it'll be pushing a lot more than 200bhp!

I was hoping for a harder looking car like a fiesta version of the focus RS :(

Is there still hope for somethin a little more special to come out?

So once again Ford go into battle down on power.

Steady little grasshopper! It's not even out yet. It might be twice the car the Clio is, no one knows. I don't think it will because the Clio willbe more raw feeling. The reason Evo loved it.

It's still left a gap for the Fiesta RS but not this model. Hopefully it'll happen eventually.

But would you pay £20k+ for a fiesta? I suppose with an RS badge on the back most would.

  Evo 5 RS
I'd imagine the front end will look a tad meaner, hence the tape. That intercooler looks fairly menacing. I'm a NA fanboy through n' through but you can't deny this being a bit of a dark horse :X

  FN2 Type R +MK6 Golf
People are paying over 40k for golfs and A3's atm,so im sure people would buy a 20k+ RS.Infact i bet they would sell out...

FPMSL!

The Fiesta has the best chassis and steering in it's class! Corsa/Polo/Clio/Fabia. Are you mental?

When was the last time you seen a bad handling Ford? Fan boi or not even a 1.4 51 plate Focus handles well!

Unless they adapt the revo nuckle from the focus...

Saving that for the fiesta RS

180 hp won't cause the fiestas drive much problems prob have all the electric crap of traction control that cant be turned all the way off to help anyway :(

I so hope there will be RS modle same as Renault should offer a S-charged version of the 200 for 20k lol

I work for Ford as a salesman and we are always the last to hear!

Although the rumour I heard yesterday was that they were going to give the Fiesta ST 200bhp to keep up with the Clio 200, Corsa VXR, Seat Ibiza, Polo GTI etc.

We'll have to wait to see!

Looks too much like a normal Fiesta for me....

Yes, you do realise it's disguised don't you?

It'll have around 180 ish. Montune will make the 200 mark easily as always. Warranty friendly no doubt.

That was the rumour although I think 180 will be enough.

I've driven the new Focus ecoboost 150 and that pulls well. They will just revise the engine with a bit more power and put it in the Fiesta. Should be great fun!

Yeah they use the 1.6 Ecoboost in the C-max aswell.

Think it will also have an overboost facility for extra Torque.

Possibly the most retarded statement I've read on the entire internet.

An 11 year old Focus still out handles brand new hatches. And A fiesta 1.25 Zetec (mk4 iirc) is probaby the best handling supermini ever produced.

One can only assume you have never driven any Fords. At all.

Yeah they've got the engine in the Mondeo also but it could probably do with a little bit more power because of the size of it.

They've had the overboost facility on the 2.0tdci for a while, should make for a fantastic Fiesta.

Can't wait for the training up at Henry Ford college, take it round the track a few times!

The Y reg 1.25 Zetec is still to this day an amazing drive!

MK5 Dan. :)

TBF we all know the 200 has closer to 185hp anyway. Throw in no torque, and it being heavier, and I'd hardly say the Fiesta is 'down on power'. Mountune will almost certainly get involved, too. Meaning a warranty friendly 200+ hp, and torque that the Clio could only dream of. It's fair to say that the Renault will probably handle better, but even that is by no means certain. Throw in far better build quality, and chairs that won't be trimmed in tissue paper. Plus it looks like it may be cheaper. Hardly a bad recipe TBH.

Then again this place is fanboy central, so nothing will ever beat the mighty Clio. EVAR!

Fiesta RS VS a S-charged 200 would be a very hard choice IMO normal 200 VS the new ST very hard choice as well
But if either of the little bit special cars come up against a normal one the special one wins! it's a no brainer when the cars are that close in comparison :)

Fan boys we may be but we do like to have more stuff in the same class to compare against lol

Yup or even into the next model. It's like a trumph card they could play anytime but wishing aside it surely would cost a lot of money to make?

The girlfriend should be getting one of these when it comes out. Company cars through Ford FTW (sometimes!).

From what she's heard it should be close to 200 bhp and released August time, but maybe closer to the end of the year.

This is what I heard but didn't know about release date. It will probably be a 6 month wait from order, hope not

It'll be well into 2012 for the release imo. The will also facelift the mk7 around the same time.

sounds terrible to be honest, not enough power to compete with the rivals

...it surely would cost a lot of money to make?

Not necessarily mate. If they feel there is a market, they will make it. The MkII Focus was a massive sales success, and they kept the costs down by building the car 98% on the regular production line. It won't be a 4WD road going WRC car, but it will almost certainly happen. I suppose it really depends where the market is in 2-3 years actually. If high performance cars get persecuted any further, then there's a chance it won't happen. One thing is certain, if they do build it, it won't have arches slapped on with no more nails.

I'm yet to drive a Ford. I would love to. The only bad things I have ever heard about them is the lack of power in the previous Fiesta ST.

You haven't read the thread have you... :boring:

Lolos at the arches! I could actually convert my normal megane into a 250 just by using no more nails and some plastic!

Of course it'll be FWD and rather powerful, i'm sure it will also look very very special! We can only live in hope. I do think you're right about performance car market.

Then again they can now get away with small turbo'd engines. A simple tuned 1.6/1.8 turbo or even one of the newer 2.0 litres turbos would probably ruin everything that's currently out there. Would they get away with a hot hatch 2.0 turbo in todays world?
