The New Whip

Ouch!

Only just seen this, looked very very nice pre-explosion!

Hope you get it sorted ok, imagine it's quite costly?

I estimate about $3,500 roughly but no doubt will end up more.

High EGT's?

And that number plate, how much was it? That would cost at least 10k over here!

Everything was running sweet until it went. No detonation or anything and it happened cruising at freeway speed in 6th.

Plate was $450 ;-)

Replacement block and sump turned up today. Went to an engine builder who's local and explained what I wanted doing and he said he can get me some forged pistons at a better price so I look forward to what he can get for me. He's going to service the head, replace the damaged valves, clean the block and sump, measure everything up including the crank and let me know if anything needs machining from there.

Just waiting on everything turning up now, ordered Wiseco pistons, Manley H beam rods and Mahle Clevite mains and big end bearings.
The rest of the bits I need like gaskets, timing chain kit, head bolts and main bolts I'll get from Mazda. I just need to find some technical information on setting up the balance shaft with the correct backlash.

I know but not uncommon on these motors. Pistons turned up today. Few other bits like crank girdle, oil pump and pickup and a couple of injectors turned up yesterday.

Finally made some progress on this. Rods turned up with the bearings the other week so I sent everything to the machine shop and to my surprise I got everything back just four days later.
Work I had done was:
Valve cover painted
Block cleaned, painted, honed and measured
Crank balanced up
Pistons fitted to rods
Head serviced, four valves replaced on cylinder one, both intake valves were well gone
So I wasted no time in getting the engine back together this weekend. Still need a new crank bolt, flywheel bolts, oil strainer o ring and bolts, clutch kit and a pilot bearing which I'm going to sort out this week. Fingers crossed I should have the motor back in the car next weekend so I can start bolting bits back on the following week ready for that turn key moment of truth.
It was a doddle putting it together as I did my research beforehand and I had the engine workshop manual and a very good how-to from a member on the mazdaspeed forums to refer to.
The 40 degree heat and having to help put out a bush fire in the middle of it all was the killer.

Finally all back together now and running pretty smooth. Had it up on the hoist today after almost a week and I've spotted a fuel leak and a coolant leak so hopefully sort them this weekend and all should be well. Probably one of the scariest moments of my life starting it up for the first time though!

I've lost count of the amount of hours I've put into it. Not something I want to do again any time soon! Also fitted an EGR delete so hopefully keep the internals a lot cleaner.

That's not my house btw, that's my auntie's but me and my girlfriend are building our own just around the corner and we're at lockup stage so we'll be moving in roughly six weeks from now.
You've been out here before? Howcome you didn't stay?

I was doing a working holiday visa and you only get a year unless you do 3 months rural work. Managed to get mine done but ran out of money and I needed to come home and get a proper job for a while as I want to live in Oz. Got a job as a glazier for the last 12 months so heading out in October back to the Gold Coast :) I miss it everyday!

I love Australian houses, so much for the money!

457 sponsorship visa is the best way. You get four years as long as you stay with your employer that sponsors you. After two years on the sponsorship visa working full time you're eligible to apply for a permanent residency visa.

Yeah that's the plan, apparently glazing is in the top 10 jobs required in Australia so I'm hoping I'll be alright :)
