The rattling/clanking/tin can syndrome on my 182

  RS Clio 182
Hi guys - my 182 has started to develop a clanking sound coming from the front of the car - sounds like a load of tin cans rattling about - but it only does it in low gears, between around 2-4K revs and mainly when im de-accelerating...high speeds is fine.

Now ive searched this forum about it,and it seems to be a common problem - i take it this is a loose engine/exhaust/heatshield mount?

Ive just jacked the car up and nothing seems loose underneath - the exhaust seems solid enough,so im thinking its more a loose engine mount?

My 182 is also approaching 5 years old/36,000 miles in the next month,so obviosly i need both belts doing - this hasnt anything to do with it has it? Does a belt just snap or is there warning signs beforehand?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having this problem also. Mines not that loud at the momnent though, though it was a crackling speaker at first.

this is weird - i went to work today which is a 30 mile round trip, and i didnt hear the rattling/clanking once! I was driving exactly the same way - some hard accelarating, then slowing down..

I cant believe that the noise i was hearing the other day (which sounded pretty bad) can just disappear..

Oh well,i'll be glad if i dont hear again, thats for sure!

Try taking the plastic engine cover off and see if that works.Ive had the same problem on my 206 gti and now on my 172.The noise doesnt completely disappear but makes it less obvious and irritating. It can be affected by the temperature aswell for some reason. The colder it is the louder the noise.

silencer in your exhaust pal, mine does it, its cos they get condensation in them and rust from the inside, the baffles become loose and rattle.

could be what mine is and thats the spring cat to manifold clamp bracket thingy. had it fixed at ren last yr and its just done it again. so much than the heat sheild rattle. like a load of loose bolts being shaken.

welcome to renault ownership. Heatshield is a usual one, or loose engine cover (if you have one). Rattles usually come from the exhaust i've found from mine.
