The REAL weight of FF air con setup, My latest weight saving....

  172 Race Car
Been very busy today. now ive decided not to do combe i can crack on with the latest mods/improvements and search for my missing power. (more on that later, in another thread)

With the help of Dave, (BomberGTR) We took off all the a/c compressor and brackets.

And this lot weighs............

So including the pipes, condensor (air con radiator to you laymen) and 0.5kg of gas its around 15kg

Still have the evaporator to come off (the bit in the heater box) if i can get it off as im not sure yet

The brackets going back on weigh less than 1kg, not the cup set up! will reveal all in good time. More work/investigation needed.

Sorry but i don't think THAT many people care...its not gonna make much difference when a 'better' driver in the same or a car of similar power rinses you whilst chillin' as they've left the aircon in..

Burp - nice one fella.

I'm doing the same on mine too - as its a track toy theres even less point in having it and more point in losing weight.

Are you fabricating custom mounts or using the Cup setup?

Sorry but alot of people seam to care. I read quite a few threads where the weight of the aircon is disputed. Was only posting for those interested

Mine now weighs around 935kg. Its a track focused car. i bet most people on the track would have turned the aircon off if they still have it any way.........

Im definatley not using the cup set up, its too pricey new and rare second hand. Working on a much cheaper version and will update next week

No i havent set a target or anything. tbh there is loads I could do but i dont think i'll get much more off without spending money on carbon bits and plastic windows etc.

Would like to change the seats at some stage, they are heavy and the size of arm chairs

10kg?! :S Doesn't really seem worth it imo,
It all adds up. The aircon has never worked. The aux pulley kit is £107+vat. that would need replacing anyway

I will remove all the unwanted bits, save weight and spend a hell of a lot less than that sorting the aux belt out. So i think its worth it......

Nonsense! I always have my climate control on when on track - keeps me nice and cool!

it's all down to the individual is it not. thanks for the info. nice to know that it all weighs quite a bit. even if those of us are not removing it.keep going burp

You having a laugh?! A stone and a half... If I stopped cruisin down to KFC I'd lose more weight, and still be cool as a cucumber when the sun shines.

That's the weight of a fat 1 year old baby! Who'd notice a gain from removing that?

Love my CC in the Summer and it's excellent for demisting windows within seconds.

Why are people being negative?

The dude never used aircon, so why the hell not remove it in his stripped out track car? Didn't cost anything and will help with the overall power/weight ratio.

thank you fubar, im amazed tbh. 10kgs is massive when u consider the lengths people go to to save a few kgs

Agree Dan, what a bunch of old women its a track car for f***s sake! The air con never worked and even if it did he wouldn't of used it, plus to get it working it would have needed £107 worth of work, best thing to do was f**k it off.
I can't stand air con, proper hot hatches don't have it. I would rather spend my v-power slingshotting down the nearest country lane, if I get hot I take my jumper off or put the window down, its not like the climate over here requires it anyway.

To Quote Fubar, just to let people know what this car is all about.

Now then, do you really think he gives to s***s if he cant cruise to KFC for his bucket meal and not have the A/C on ?

Think about it.

Didn't think so, highly unlikely they will have a KFC on track now is it.

Very interested in these bargain brackets you speak of.
Every 10kg helps, and 105kg (10% of the weight) is worth 17bhp (10% of the power) in my eyes. And thats without disscussing the cornering and braking gains. Thats my gain when I start stripping mine soon.

Please do keep us updated...

Seems a good weight saving to me, especially if didn't work anyway.

As it's for the track every little counts and it all adds up.

But I've known a few people to fit A/C back into their cars for racing, just to kept the windows clear in a wet race.

Cool, quite a bit of weight there! And should gain slightly more power by not having the engine turning all that lot.

I had the air con on round Combe last year, it was hot lol!!

NIce one mate! I've removed mine and had alloy brackets made so hopefully save more on the Volvo ones....

I'd just disconnect the belt/pulley (if possible), forget about the weight of a 1 year old baby and go racing!

Can't believe the neg comments on here?... Alan wtf?

Its a track day car, with faulty air con so of course he's going to remove it.

Im sure alot of people are interested on here on this sort of technical detail as am I.

10kg weight loss but also now the engine doen'st have to drive the pump so Burp has prob claimed back 2-4 bhp back.

Good work Burp.

by removing it i have lost 3 pulleys that the a/c setup has. compressor, lower idler and the auto tensioner pulley.

For those who are interested i will post details of what bits u need to do the conversion. Its gonna work out MUCH cheaper than a cup setup
