Tiff Needell..What does he know

Quote: Originally posted by mason__1 on 10 May 2005

Hi, :)

3.He did not do enough laps to get to know the cars properly.
You think he did one lap in each car? Hed have been testing them for loads of laps, they just dont show them as not everyone wants to see 2 cars doing lots of laps. They used to show Tiff doing one show off lap, and one hot lap when they road tested cars. I reckon the corner that Tiff gets the back end out on both cars is edited from the show off lap, as you dont take a corner like that if youre trying to set a fast lap time.

In the end, the Clio got beaten, live with it, you can make all the excuses you like but thats what happened on the show. Its funny to think that before the show was aired there where loads of people on here rubbing there hands together saying, "finally, these 2 cars are being test driven together" and others saying "just watch the clio whip the Civics arse"

Well now you know.

lol - this thread gets better!!! i dont think he was comparing the prices, just the cars....... and anyway......... the civic costs more but does not depreciate as much.. your more likely to lose more money on the clio....... having checked autotrader the cheapest civic was a 51plate with 93k and that still went for £9000!!!!

Now find me a 51plate clio with 93k* and see the value of that

(*if the engine makes it :p)

As for the consiparacy theory - I think you have it backwards.

they get both cars, which ever one wins they KEEP then give away in a competition. Theyre not gonna say this one was a bit crap so you can have it are they lol.

You guys are still missing the point in that the laptime and Tiffs driving of the cars were fine. I have no problem with the 0.2 second.

The real issue and the real reason to question Tiffs judgement or impartiality was the commentary. In particular the claim that the CTR somehow handles better and has sharper steering.

Now any unbiased individual that has driven both cars (including myself, my CTR owning mate, EVO mag etc) will readily admit that the CTR has massively over assisted steering that gives you no feel and no feed back. Its about as sharp as a sponge.

In some ways the laptime backs this up, we know the CTR will take chunks out of the 182 on the straights so if the handling is lacking as well how the hell did it keep to within 0.2s?????????????????????????

the best way is to ask girls if they dont like they way it looks then they wont look at you while your driving it.

tbh the honda is a nice motor so is the clio. i think the clio is always going to be an underdog compared with other cars but most people on this forum couldnt wouldnt stretch to £16K for a hatch + other related bills.

i would have one in white though !

In the first 7 seconds the honda should have been 1/2 second in front. .... according to the book stats. ;) ... so the 182 is obviously a quicker car round the track!

Mauricewt - Spot on observation - Everyone on here Im sure would agree with the first seven seconds issue, even if you extend it to say 70mph, therefore its not rocket science to work out that the subsequent 40+ seconds round the track the Clio must have gained between 2 and 3 tenths of a second back to end being only 2 tenths of a second down, this is also AFTER taking into account the abysmal last corner. At worst the Clio could have simply lost out during the initial launch and then stayed same for rest of track.

OR is everyone now gonna turn round and say the Clio would have been quicker in the first seven seconds or so but therefore as it was clearly slower round the track it ended up losing its initial advantage

Which one is it guys ? Clio quicker by .2 or .3 secs to 60/70 or quicker round the majority of track (after initial launch) Its one else the other

ps why all the childish comments like "get over it" "cant believe this topic" etc, If this topic is below you or you cant be arsed reading all the posts then why waste your precious time posting in it, This is a forum for discussion, take a chill pill guys, some people on this post are actually offering decent comments and observations

For the money id get an new ITR over the CTR. That would bum rape both cars
good choice!!! i would get a classic shape scoob type r - who cares if you catch me on the twisties as you wont be able to overtake on the straight!

PMSL - It was only the other day that my friendly neighbour (182 cup) told me that us BM owners were a touchy bunch !

I think a reality check is needed – 0.2 seconds difference, test track, expert driver etc

Does that really make a difference to an ‘everyday’ driver under ‘everyday’ conditions, could most of us even be that consistent (within 0.2 seconds) with lap times in a standard road car ?

I wonder how many Porsche / RS owners are bitching about that comment ? Just because it was on telly doesn’t mean its true … ;)

The Clio is quicker than the Honda Jazz - Its supermini counterpart.

The Megane 225* is quicker than the Honda Civic Type viagRa.

Should be pleased that the 182 can almost wound a highly rated car from a different league.

*Debatable of course but let leave that for another time eh?

Nice cars the 225 Megane. Mate of mine has one. But he bertainly wasnt pulling away from me when I had my CTR, believe me..

I agree both cars are nice. And if i had the cash i may of gone for a CTR but got a nice 172 in the end. Im pleased with it but there are better hot hatches.

honda have infact had meny engines fail. their was this myth going about that they have never had a faulty engine. lol ask any honda tech and they will tell you they infact have meny problems with the engine.

me and me mate who owns ctr have had few drags in our time whilst owning this car and as people have said theirs sod all in it. from a rolling start or standstill theirs just nothing in it @ all and he will even come on here and admit that. even the so called myth of it pulling away above 60 is not true. the cars are so similer in performance that the major factor if any with the car maybe pulling away would be its drag coefficient. civic is far more aerodynamic than the clio.

and will people stop saying the clios lose so much money when sold. are people forgeting none of us have paid any where near the retail price for our cars. i have known people to get them for £10500 try and get that much discount on any other car.

1 yr old civic type r £12500 (4000 miles) bought for £16000 (£3500 loss)

1 yr old clio 182 £10800 (5000 miles) bought for £12500 (£1700 loss)

just an example of recent prices.

  182cup

All joking aside i paid nearly 5k less than my mate with a civic type r he has no air con and the cup looks much better, even 2 second faster round a track wouldnt be worth 5k, both very good cars at the end of the day

I am probably one of the only people to like the look of the type r!!!
I f**king love em for looks alone specially in gunmetal!!!

They could be as slow as the 182 and id still rather the better looking CTR!!!:p:devilish:

Prefer the worcester sauce ones myself :D

I could never buy a CTR as to my eyes they are so ugly, not unlike many of todays hatches. Great engine and box but look at what they go and stick it in. I agree with the peeps saying they would go for the Teg instead - much better on the eyes.

come to think of it do you remember the shoot out with the civic and the s2000 and the civic actually overtook it. (think it was 5th gear).

now i thought i would have no chance in my 182 vs s2000, let alone nearly overtake it ........ go figure ?!?!?!

Tiff Needell..What does he know?

Well to be frank, Tiff Needell has 35 years experience behind the wheel of a car. Hes been driving cars since back in 1971 where he started in Formula Fords, Was offered a drive in Formula 1 but couldnt get a Super License. Took a trip over to sports cars most notably the C-Cars and also the Le Mans series. Hes also spent time with Vauxhall and Nissan in the British Touring Car Championship and following that in Listers. Hes also co-presented Top Gear and now 5th Gear with VBH....

sooooo in answer to your question... Id hazard a guess he knows quite a f**king lot.

sorry, this was on driven a while ago with jason plato driving.

so how would the statement the 182 will beat an s2000 go down ??

  197-I love!!!

All I can say is that I have driven the CTR and sure its quick etc. and as other people say whats 2/10ths and The 182 has beaten it on other tracks but I found the CTR totally characterless against the 182 and thats why I bought The 182 in the end-A great car.

Gonna get scorned here but I dont like the look of the 182 **runs for cover**

The Civic looks like a proper car and the 182 looks a bit like a blow up one lol.

All round with bubble tyres. (Strange as the civic has bigger wheels!)

Ill put big money that the Civic will destroy the fatass 225 around the track. Cant comment about the Trophy edition.
