Timing belt snapped :-( 172 Sport 03 plate

  Ex-Cup/Escort MK1 Mexico
Back to the Sport scene after owning a 172 Cup a few years ago. I only bought the 172 Sport 03 plate from a mate a few months ago and the timing belt has snapped. Was driving it at the time (not fast) and it just slowed down from 40, 30, 20, 10, 0. Had to get it trailered home and my brother in law who's a mechanic looked at it and said the timing belt has snapped :-(

How much you reckon to get it fixed ? Car is located in Merthyr Tydfil and will obviously need to be towed or trailered to garage. Could have a local garage to look at it but feel if I'm gonna pay I may as well get it done at a local independent specialist if there's one near me ? I am 20 miles north of Cardiff.

Any recommendations ? Thanks for all your help

Head needs to come off to see whether pistons and valves have collided. My guess is they have, so you can either replace the valves and whatever else has been mangled, or source a new engine.

Either way it's a big bill, unless you're doing it yourself.

Don't even bother spending a penny taking it apart. Buy a secondhand engine and fit it instead. Sell the old one for parts.

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Every sympathy mate, been there with my phase 1. Looking back I should have simply sourced a new lump..

why on earth would you buy valves from renault mate, we use BGA, never had a problem and they're not expensive

agree, I've used BGA, FAI and AE and never had an issue. Genuine are hardly exemplary quality!!

I just said its cheaper to buy supertecs than get them from Renault?

Sorry I'm not very good at explaining myself over the Internet. Never could string a sentence together.

haha no worries mate, you want to buy an injector removal kit for merc sprinters, used once, doubt i'll be using it until next year when Lee is back in b'ham haha!!

Or could just get hold of a second hand head and swap them over. Just when the head Is off check the pistons look ok. Maybe a good idea to remove the sump to check for any chunks of metal :) but I'm no expert

a head swap isn't a bad idea, but i'd always change the stem seals while it's apart anyway, so not really saving any work

Yh might as well whilst its off probably cheapest option. Like I said just make sure all pistons look ok and are not damaged and sump is clear. Even if you strip it yourself and its all smashed you haven't wasted any money so might as well :)
