Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

I have changed my mind, you got to keep it now !

Went out with Tim at Llandow and was amazed at how it just pulls itself out of corners, absolute monster !

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Update:

Last September I fitted the ITG induction kit, Forge hardpipes and 630cc injectors.

Unfortunately when up at RS Tuning having it mapped Paul discovered that the turbo was damaged so only made 256bhp when I was hoping for 285bhp+ :dapprove:

I was going to sell the car after that bad news but after performing so well at Llandow a few days later I couldn't let it go.

Fitted a Scanguage a few months ago.

Picked up a set of Vibratechnic engine mounts for £165 on Sunday morning.

Loved them on my 172 so hopefully they'll tighten up the steering and throttle response on my R26 as well.

Washed it on Sunday and took a few pics on a business park nearby.

Next month Michael Woodford is going to remove the turbo and send it off for a hybrid rebuild. While that's being done the engine will be treated to forged rods, pistons, and one piece valves. The compression is going to be raised to 9:5:1 which should give better top end power. I'm also planning on getting a single mass flywheel, R26r clutch, and 3" exhaust system. Hopefully once mapped that'll give me reliable power somewhere between 330 and 350bhp.

Only 256bhp... yeah, you were pitifully slow around Llandow mate... ;) LOL!

The plans sound good and I look forward to seeing the result! I might have to jump in for a passenger ride should I ever get the opportunity to do so. :)

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Yes, only 256

Before I fitted those mods last September it had run 270bhp.

I'm hoping it'll be ready for the Castle Combe Action Day in April, if it is I'll take you out. Delay at the moment is the lead time on the rods and pistons.

350, that would be nice Tim, certainly perk up the driving experience on the old bus.

Very nice Tim. Lovely car. Did you have any idea the turbo was on the way out?

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Be careful running those Vibratechnic mounts, I've read a few horror stories about them on meganes....

But the rest of the plans sound excellent!

Yes, 350 would be very nice but I'm expecting it to be closer to 330 than 350.

Thanks Scutch. I need some R26r wheels soon, look great on yours.

I'd noticed a slight lack of top end power but I put it down to my failing injectors. It's still quicker than most things on the road now even with a damaged turbo.

Top engine mount bolt shearing? I'll keep the rear stabiliser bar.

Look forward to seeing the results Tim!

I'm looking forward to seeing the results aswell mate. Banana bus will be flying along to Le Mans :)

I am as well!

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Yep, I've also seen one that has sheared the top mount / upper timing belt cover.

Do you know if they were using just the engine mount and not the stabiliser bar?

Might aswell go for a larger turbo if you got the forged hardpipes, But apart from that,
Lovely car and hope you keep it instead of getting a Corvette :p

A larger turbo needs a custom exhaust manifold which is expensive. Also with my R26 doing 20k a year the hybrid will give more than enough power.

Hybrid will be plenty. Looking forward to the next update mate. Might be worth going for the helix clutch kit though.

From what I've read on ms.net it's slightly heavier than standard. I'm only saying go for the Helix as there's someone on ms.net that's forged and running a hybrid and the ktec flywheel and .r clutch and killed the clutch within 3 or 4k miles.

I'm buying a Helix kit pretty soon.

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Helix's are good bits of kit Tim, its what the paxo will be running. Would a standard pressure plate be up to the job with just a Helix friction plate? Gives the same pedal feel but better bite. Just a thought. :)

Thanks for the offer and I hope you are able to get the rods and pistons soon. Following this thread with interest... :)

Re: Tim's R26 Banana Boost Bus

Bit of an update.

It's just shy of 71k and 5 1/2 years old now so the cambelt is due in 1000 miles. I still haven't fixed the turbo and engine mainly due to a lack of time and availability of the rods and pistons. Trouble is we don't know if my engine will need a rebore so can't order the parts until that is determined and the supplier has never had the rods and both standard and oversized pistons on the shelf at same time.

I'm off to Le Mans next month so plan now is to fit this turbo I've bought of Renparts, get the cambelt done and hopefully take the head off to see what the bores are like. Then I'll send my current damaged turbo off to be hybrid'd and order the rods and pistons I need.

Megane225_zpse8852507.jpg

It's not the cheapest way of doing things but as I use my R26 every day it'll minimise time it's off the road. At least it'll be ready for Le Mans and making 280bhp plus instead of the 256bhp or less it is now.

I went round Paul's (Gorms) a couple of weekends ago to get it washed properly for once. There was tons of tar so think he ended up most of a bottle of Tardis neat to clear it

IMG_4469_zps0ead48ed.jpg

IMG_4473_zps36034ea9.jpg

Then as we were off to Beaulieu the next day I borrowed Paul's Werkstat Acrylic kit, used my DA to polish in the Werkstat Prime then a couple of layers of the Jett Trigger sealant by hand.

Some photos from Simply French at Beaulieu

I don't think it's ever looked so clean at a meet so thanks for your help Paul :)

Last week I bought a Ktec 3" exhaust from a Meganesport member in Bracknell and got it fitted on Saturday for £30 at Merityre in Hook.

IMG_4502_zpsb08ff2b1.jpg

It looks and sounds much better now. Impressed by the system as it seems well made and the exhaust has nice growl when making progress but as quiet as standard when cruising along.

IMG_4517_zps7fb0c8af.jpg

IMG_4516_zpse8ebb74a.jpg

After getting the exhaust fitted and going for a spirited drive I spent Saturday afternoon tidying up the engine bay. The bonnet car was sagging, dirty and a trap for leaves so decided to replace it with aluminium heatshield.

IMG_4510_zpse12f3cac.jpg

IMG_4509_zps060204f1.jpg

Then on Sunday I gave it a wash and topped up the Werkstat with a couple of layers of Banana Armour as i was off to Goodwood to watch Chris on Monday and I don't want Paul's hard work to go to waste lol.

IMG_4557_zpsebadb598.jpg

So that's it up to now.

Plans for next few months are:

Cambelt change and fit replacement turbo
Fit Vibratechnic mounts
New R26 or R26r alloys
R26r spoiler
Replace 2.75" decat with 3" decat
Hybrid turbo
Forge engine
Helix clutch and smf
Cooksport springs + oem dampers

Once that's done it'll be visually and mechanically how I want it.

Didn't know you were fitting new engine mounts Tim. They will transform the car believe me!

Didn't actually know your car was LY untill now. Always thought is was RS Dirt Grey. Does look fantastic.

Also, would be interested to see what you think of the engine mounts mate. I've been warned to leave them and get standards, but curiosity is getting the better of me.

Wanted to fit them since buying the car as they transformed my Clio too!

Would love a banana boost bus. Do lots go wrong on them? I've not heard good stuff from some Megane owners.

Not really. Every car has it's problems though but the meganes are generally solid if they are maintained and kept well like any car. Window regulators failing is the most common problem I'd say.
