Vein's Black 330Ci Sport

  Never above 25mpg
What are these actually like to drive Vein?

I am seriously looking into one but not sure if I would like smooth power delivery.

Whats the best spec 330 to get? One with TV/DVD/Sat Nav

World apart from the Clio!

Comfy, quiet on a run but noisy when you boot it (and a lovely straight 6 noise!)

Great driving position and the steering wheel is so much more positive (imo) to the 172 I had before.

I've got shitty tyres and my MV1s are due replacement though so I've never really booted it above a ton but it does shift when you need it to!

looks nice, im looking at these myself but cant make my mind up what engine to go for. any ideas what the fuel consumption is like between the 318 and 330?

Basically, if you have a choice of any of the engines, the smaller 6 cylinders are essentially a waste of money because the MPG is nigh on the same.

The smaller engines, the 318's etc are more economical, but when you get to the 2.2 2.5 and 3.0 6 cylinders I think they're much the same. Basically, if you can afford to insure a 330 ok, go for it.

pretty much what i thought and had read before, mates mums just got the estate 320 doesn't go quick but its not needed to. my 172 doesnt go above 3k anymore as i have the rallye to have fun in and its just used to go to work in so a 330 would be overkill.

Really nice motor this, 330's are great in that they have the performance as well as comfort etc.

I want to get an ipod lead thing, but it replaces the cd changer and you have to run wires the length of the car....

You done that yet Vein?

I was looking at this one:

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/15099.html

Seems perfect but I don't know how easy the wire is to run?

Hi Rob, No I haven't got anything ipod orientated installed in the BMW as I am quite content with CDs (I didn't have the CD changer when I first got it).

As people have mentioned, the 4 cylinder and lower 6ers aren't as economical as people think unless you're constantly up and down the motorway!

When I drove the 318 2.0 16v to trade it in against the 3.0 24v I only managed 4mpg less on the motorway!

The 318 got 27mpg round town driving and the 330 gets me 25-26mpg so not really a huge improvement!

I have just picked up a 330 myself (queue another bmw thread on CS). As said they are a world apart from the clio, slightly quicker i would say, and definitely more pulling power at 60 plus. They have a very smooth power delivery so on a good B road the clio will "feel" more lively, although in the 330 you don't need to sit at 4000rpm and above to get moving.

I'm currently sitting on 29mpg, but do alot of A road driving at a smooth speed so a quick blast or pootle round the town will soon see that figure drop.

Updates, updates... well...

Haven't really done much over the winter months! Got my tyres sorted, had a juddering at 80mph, seemed to be down to a cracked rear wheel! Thankfully dad had a spare so that's all sorted and fun can be had :D

Bought some new gearknob and handbrake gaitors from a company on eBay, not genuine BMW but absolutely spot on! I ripped the old covers off, superglued the new ones on and all OEM!

Also got a clubsport gearknob which is such an improvement on the driving style!

Wing is getting rustier but that should be sorted next month (fingers crossed).

Finally took the car to a BMW specialist in Bradford on Avon because of the temperature sensor fault showing at 50 degrees all the time.

Bought a new sensor but it didn't work and explained this to them.

They resoldered a new plug for the temp sensor but it's still not working so it's going back in on Wednesday, hopefull it will be sorted!!

Nice additions, that rust would upset me every time I saw it though. Is it all on the surface on not coming through from the back?

Rusting from the inside, out !

So tempted by one of these as I love driving them at work, but feel I need to be at least 30 to own one, lol.

Link to gaitor please, i have a Clubsport knob to go on as well, but dont fancy paying BMW £60 for a small piece of cows ar5e.

Dave was from here on ebay:

Might look cheap but exactly as I got above. They come with elastic fitments to go around the original frames but I'd recommend supergluing them as my dad had some beige ones in his 320 and never did glue them and it was a pain.

Theres another 330 in westbury X reg iirc in blue and the drivers wing is so fuking rusty its unreal, bits hanging off, sharp edges etc.

Yeah nothing on the rest of the car just the wing! Even the other wing is OK so whether that's original or not I don't know!

Same as mine, just the near side wing has some bubbling from underneath, no rust showing IIRC, but the rest of the car is fine.

Another update?

Well.. yes, only a minor one! Car went back to the garage at 8am this morning and picked it up not 20 minutes ago!

Turns out the fault with the temp sensor still being at +50.0C was the fact a technician forgot to plug it back into the dash clocks at the back.

Anyhow... the job has been sorted but the customer care was to be desired so I won't be going back there!

I had a few more eBay items come through the post this week!! My bargain First Aid kit from an 06 BMW and also a brand new First Aid box from CotswoldBMW.

Both look like so:

And in the car!

(So many pictures of First Aid kits eh?)

So I'm a happy chap so far!

Payday Friday so I will order the new wing next week :)

Another mildly boring update!!

Finally have had a decent chance to wash the car! Been back and forth to work and Yeovil now and again so after a well deserved lie in thought it was time I tackled the beast!

Dad got some spray on Turtle Wax wheel cleaner from B&M for £2 a pop and it's brilliant, almost as good as Wonder Wheels and far better than that red Simoniz stuff!

Unfortunately only took one picture before as it started to rain!

IMG_0433.jpg

It then became torrential so I couldn't be bothered with the car after I'd got soaked doing the wheels!

After lunch rain stopped and I got on with the rest of the car!

Gave me a chance to look at the rust on the wing properly...

IMG_0434.jpg

...but don't worry, a replacement wing is all new and boxed up in the garage ;)

Amazes me how bad these Bimmers are for rusting on the front arches! I take it crap gathers around there easily?

Yup, they're lipped, so crud gathers on the inside & they rust from the inside out. You would have thought they'd learn from the rear arches on the e36, but no ... still, its not that hard to change, bolt on, bolt off iirc.

Thought I'd do a small update! After recently paying off the car (FINALLY) I decided it was time to make plans for getting the wing done, although it's never that simple!

About 3 weeks ago I was going (slightly over) the speed limit on a certain road and I hit a pothole! :(

The b*****d buckled one of my lovely MV1s and knocked the rear ABS sensor out.

Then to top it all off during last week I hit a tree stump in work's car park (late at night, stressful day, pitchblack etc etc)

So it's been in the garage a couple times, already had the ABS sensor sorted and they've popped the sideskirt back in as I thought I'd buggered that up completely and I've bought a set of new wheels :D.

Unfortunately people ask silly prices for the MV1s individually and I needed a new wheel ASAP as it's a daily so found some nice M-Parallel reps (boo reps!).

Only problem is they're a lower offset (from a 5-series) and I'm awaiting some spigot rings to correct the centre bore!

But I should have some dish :D

Anyway, (crapp iPhone) photo time!

No pics of it on the new wheels?

Shame you ruined one. Look on BM autosport, they have singles occasionally under 'USED' etc

Nah not quite yet! I daren't fit them without the spigots and it's going in the garage to get all the geometry done as the last garage I took it to were amateurs (the wheels are straight but the steering wheel is on the piss slightly and it pulls slightly so needs sorting).

Does look good though, they're an ET20 and standards are ET35 so it will be interesting to say the least, can always sell them on before MOT time!

Ouch look at that wing. I reckon mine will start to go in my time of ownership. Where did you get the gen wing from?

Cotswold BMW Tom, went through E30Zone.net and they did a small discount!

Nice, I keep looking at E38/39 wheels too.

What you going to be doing with the MV1s?

Well, I will have 3 left with semi decent tyres will probably sell them!
