Hmmm, my Ragnotti was dead even with a certain V6, both in roll on acceleration, and top speed. Tested on the Autobahn. I was amazed...

A certain Renault UK employee will vouch for this. I only wish he had tole me that a couple of the ignition leads had come loose...

The V6 is a great car to look at, but somewhat disappointing to drive.

not danger you'd be keepin up with a mk2! They are ALOT faster above 90! I've had blasts with most of the scottish lot and other that philthy's old tb'd 172 nothing came close.

Disappointing to drive? - Again how? The whole experience is involving and the noise makes every trip memorable!

the new focus is just a very poor car with no soul, its been agreed and decided. as radical as a R26 is in styling the fact is, its faster on track, braking, accelaration, roads etc...

its a better, more fun, more desireble and more interesting car.

IMO....

The V6 isnt enough car for the money, as much as i admire the sheer stupidity and overall awesomeness of a V6 in a bean can, its a lot of money for nothing really.

And i wouldnt be seen dead in a BMW. I hate them with a burning passion, which is a shame, cos im sure the M3 is awesome, i just wouldnt want anything to do with the image that car gives off, nor be tarred with the same brush as the tossers that drive them (as a sweeping generalisation).

So, if it really is between JUST those 2 cars. V6. But get the right colour - LY. An old school friend of mine, who lives over the road has one in LY and its stunning.

A nice little anecdote to put you off the beemer -

A day from the diary of a BMW driver...

"The other day I was cruising along as usual coming onto one of my motorways, which was very busy with inferior cars.

First off, I couldn't believe that the volume of traffic DIDN'T slow down for me AT ALL as I came off the slip road! I had to squeeze into a barely big enough gap between two cars in order to get onto my motorway!

The driver of the car behind me did realise his mistake though and honked an apology to me with a long blast of his horn.

Unbelievably, I had to do the same again before I could get to the BMW lane.

He also tried to keep up with me and when he realised I would out-run him, he put on some blue lights in his front grill and urged me to get onto the hard shoulder so that he could congratulate me on my excellent car.

Needless to say, I was eager to oblige and when we had stopped, the man gave me a piece of paper confirming what I already knew - that my car goes fast!

Apparently he wants everyone to know what a superior car I have, so I had to take my drivers licence to a police station to be sent away to have some points put on! But the man at the police station said that because I drive a BMW, it won't be much longer before I earn the full 12 points, and then I won't even NEED a driving licence, so they will take it off me!

See, now THAT'S the sort of respect you get when you own and drive a BMW!"

The M3 is a lovely car, but only considered now coz it's cheaper, but more of them are highmilers and it's a dated model. The Vee will never bee dated!

At the end of the day you need to get your priority's straight. You buy the vee if you want to be different and enjoy being just that! It's a true petrohead's car.

My Point being that you cannot make such a sweeping generalisation that an M3 is not a petrolheads car. They are a fantastic machine but happen to be driven by the mass's (as is the mini cooper s / Original Golf GTi and Escort XR3i). There popularity has distracted from the fact that they are great cars to drive, Some people see it as an aspirational car to own others consider you a tw*t for driving one (though personally anyone who buy's it in kiwi or Phoenix Gold is a tw*t). Its horse's for course's, you are comparring a 2 seater clio vs a 4 seater saloon car. Of course the M3 will have sold more, its a BMW and it has 4 seats !it does not mean though its any less of a petrolheads choice....They just probobly have kids.

I Agree, you cannot compare the two, I would have loved a Clio V6 but the wife would not allow it (Very defining factor) and it only has two seats. I would not buy a E46 M3 Either though, Far to many of them around here which is why i ended up with the M5. I would have an M3 CSL though....

Thats a bit harsh had my 172 for 4 years and didn't have 1 build quality issue the whole time. All this fuss about rattles and squeaks. or maybe i was just lucky.

This is an impossible thread, the two cars are completley different.

You've got to decide what your going to use the car for. If you do alot of miles and you prefer comfort/luxury over rariety/uniqueness its the M3 all day long, but then again if you want the feel good factor and to be a bit different get the V6, its amazing the amount of people who just want a chat, know a little bit about it. As some said it does get annoying if your in a rush to get somewhere or got a hangover but its a part I enjoy about owning it. The sound of the V6 is amazing and the performance figures aren't really that much difference and it still feels quick.

Its what you want from a car really.

Madden - correct me if I'm wrong, the E39 is the previous (nicer IMHO) model M5 yea - the 5.0 V8 400bhp one? I'm no good with these beemer E numbers heh. Beautiful cars. What's it like to live with day to day? Reliable? I assume it likes a drink? What's the in gear like? Pick a gear, any gear and go was my brief experience as a passenger heh!

I recently did a 800 round trip to the peak district and saw 21-23mpg for the most part. its about £80 to fill her up and you'll see about 300 miles to the tank. no problems so far, keep a eye on the oil, and keep it serviced regularly and its fine. Just had the diff seals replaced, 4 wheel alignment and gearbox / diff fluid replaced and it came to £450. When the gearbox is warm it has a very sweet change, 2nds a bit notchy but 3rd will see you from 30mph to about 80mph....Going from a Clio Cup to this was not as big a change as I expected, The BM feels very small around you as the mirror's etc are just perfect. you can see all areas of the car and the position is just right. Nobody race's you from the lights as they don't look anything special but when you put your foot down then it fly's....I really cannot see myself wanting anything else at this stage in time. Cost me 15k, it has done 48k miles and has Satnav TV etc....Black with black leather and a full BMWSH. It really is a bargin as long as you can afford to look after it..(runs away to touch wood for fear of a VANOS failure).

15k?? Thats a farking bargain! You couldnt pick up a high mileage 2002/3 RS4 for those kind of benjamins.

I really like the M5, unless you have a keen eye for cars you would never know that it packs 400 galloping ponies under the bonnet!

Depends on if you need 5 seats or 2. I need to cart around the dog, friends, olds etc every now and then so that would rule a vee out for me. Unless, I could run one as a weekend toy as much as it pains me to say it, I'd have the bmw.
