Waxes/Sealants life span?

Bit of a strange one...

I've just been thinking about the durability of waxes/sealants and after some advice.

As I've just got myself a bike it will be put away for the winter lets say 6months for arguments sake. If a wax or sealant has a life span of 6months would it be pointless protecting the bike before I put it away or does the life span quoted only apply when its out in the elements?

Bescially would I be wasting my time protecting my bike before it gets stored?

Durability is not a big thing for me. If a wax is durable for 6 months. U keep topping it up within in that time anyway
Its all about using a wax thats easy to work with that has a bit less durability

I'd say go for it & clean it :)

Eh?

Jay, yes to your point about in the elements. So protecting the bike before it gets stored is probably not necessary (dependant on how good the storage is). One thing to make sure of is that it is clean and dry, so salts; water; and other contaminants do not affect the metal work and paint over the 6 months.

In all honesty, I'd look into a nano sealant like C1 or CQUK on bikes to make them easier to spray down.

Cheers JD.

My garage does have a few leaks so chances are it will get some moisture or dew on it. I will be covering it and getting it out to start now and again.

I will be trying a nano sealant as you've said once I've given a good polish I was just curious to the life span of them, I will try keep it topped it up if I can.

As JD has said really.

I used AF Tripple topped with GTechniq C1.5 when I got my bIke in September last year as it was living in a shed during the winter. Privided it's clean, it won't be too bad but depends how damp it is likely to get whilst stored. Are there any stone chips or bare metal that may start to fade if damp gets in?

In in the process of slowly taking bits of mine apart and coating it with C1 which should last the life of the bike.

Life of wax or sealants or down party to how exposed they are, how often they are washed and mileage etc. keep it garaged, don't do many miles and not needing regular heavy washes will see a poor durability wax last longer than expected.

I've never used nano sealants before so I'm swaying towards C2V3 or Reload from what I've seen they seem easy to apply.

Just waiting on a order of new applicators and microfibres before I can do anything.

I will check for any stone chips which I'm sure it will have somewhere. I might try and get a heater supply installed aswell.

C2V3 is a cinch to apply. Beads well (so easier to wash down the bike after a ride) and longevity is meant to be 8 months. However, even if it was 3-4 months, it's so simple to apply it is probably your best bet.

Thanks,

I've just remembered I got I the waxybox group buy so I will wait to see what I get in that.

Ah cool. I'm up in Alderley in the next few weeks, so was going to suggest trialling a few products.

I can honestly vouch for the tried and tested collinite 476 super. This stuff lasted 6 months over winter with ease. I mean beading by the end of it wasn't uniform so it was breaking down. However, I did clean it every week without fail and last winter was harsh! Really though a good layer of wax and topping it up is pointless without getting decent prep down. I didnt top up a single time as it was too cold and collinite isn't the easiest to use.

Back to your original point about elements, I think that if you put in the prep, any half decent durable wax or sealant will keep most of the problems at bay. Make sure you dont ***** about with the showy wet look waxes like r222. Although they look class they won't really be what you want to cover you for that amount of time.

476 actually lasted over a year on my old Millennium Puma after I gave it to my Dad. Mental stuff. Utterly horrible at the same time though.

  Not a 320d
Lasted over 2 years in the doorshuts of my dads car once. Back before I used the pannel at a time method Id apply it to the full car thinking itd be like AG EGP. But no.

I had to use an old bath towel to remove the 'residue'

Lols. I only ever did it once also. Was like removing 2 week old t-cut from bare paint.

Yeah. I only ever had a sample of that. Was just like any other liquid sealant really but would probably last well.

Russ swore by it as a Winter wax. I only tried it on my wheels before stripping them down a few months later, so not really a fair longevity test.

For the time being its wearing 2 coats of Vics concours just so it looks good when I'm out on it.

Will get some C2V3 and give it a going over before it gets put away.

I like topping wax with C2 recently. Really think it gives you the opportunity to use your nice wax yet give performance and durability of a new age sealant.

Cheers I will do that then.

If a wax/sealant helps protect it from thieves that would also be a bonus.

Sorry for jumping on this thread, Going to give the girlfriends mini a protection detail in the next couple of weeks. I just wondered what your advice would be on which sealant to use. The mini is pepper white ( I hate this colour shows everything up, and everything seems to stick to it) I already have tough coat, Zaino z2 and Hd wax in my kit. Whilst I would like something that gives a good finish how long it last is the most important thing. What are you thoughts?
