What type of bearing on a Ph1 172

  Clio 172 Ph1
Morning all,

Had a bit of a whirring noise going on recently, thought it was the exhaust a but a mate from work, who is a trained mechanic, pointed out that as the noise increases with speed rather than engine revs that is was more than likely to be the bearing.

He's offered to change it, which is kind but has asked me whether it is a taper or a proper bearing. I've got an X-reg Ph1 172 and have no idea.

Also, I read on here that its suggested that the rear disc(s) are replaced as they make crack when replacing the bearing?

I say disc(s) as I assume that it would be best practice to replace both disks simultaneously to ensure breaking is balanced? - Or am I talking rubbish?

Its just that Clios seem to go through a lot of wheel bearings, probably because french bearing manufacturers such as SNR are unreliable, im not sure what bearing manufacturer Renault use as standard?

I work for a bearing company and we stock SKF wheel bearing kits, which VERY rarely fail and i can get them cheap :)

  Lots of Alfas
The bearings in the renault discs say MADE IN FRANCE...

Renault sell the discs (pair), with bearing already pressed in complete with abs rings for about £175. GSF were selling them for about £140 on ebay.

I can get them in three forms....

1) As a simple bearings (like k-tec sell, but better quality) if you fancy pressing them in yourself.

2) As a wheel bearing kit (already pressed in, excluding discs and ABS rings).

3) As a Wheel Bearing and brake kit (including discs and ABS rings, already pressed in).

Id probably go for option 2 if it was me, unless i needed my discs changing of course. Ill try and get some prices etc tomorrow on all three of the above.

My mom's got a 1.2 16v which has been through 2 wheel bearings already. Its only done 15k miles :(

Edit: Is it ok to re-use ABS rings?

Being Jewish i'm naturally interested in saving a few pennies. So the above is very appealing. Alex would you perhaps PM me if you are able to do a deal with pricing for a rear bearing for my Ph1 172?

Yeah sure. Which one, passenger or drivers side?

Also do you just want a bearing on its own (you'll need to press this in yourself), or a bearing kit?
