where has all my oil gone!!

  R35 GTR
service light and oil came on yesterday, then went off, and came back on today.

I took it to my mate at kwikfit, he said oil was on minimum, but i only had it serviced 4000 miles ago.!

So it went up on the ramp. Couldnt find any where that oil was coming out majorly, it was just a thin film of oil over the bottom, and a bit on the sump plate thingy.

As you can tell I need some help , before renault tell me its normal for it to drink all the oil in a few months.

:SI topped up with halfrauds, 5w40 , I hope i havent hurt my baby........:(

ok, how do i check this? it must be going somewhere, there are no puddles of oil under the car, so its not coming out there.

you start your car, and look for smoke coming out of the exhuast, or get a compression tester (about £20 from halfords) and test that all pistons have a pressure within 20% of each other, also that the pressure is built up fast...

If you drive your car hard it will use oil , the engine is big and high performance. I did about 6000 from new and it needed toping up

common oil leak from rocker cover? take the engine cover off and look for traces of oil on the casting in amongst all the ribs.

Do a search for pics, common on 172 and 182

my car used half it's oil during running in too. But is fine now after having above problem fixed under warranty...

no smoke from exhaust, been told its probably not piston rings. There is no oil on floor where i parked.

will take the cover off the engine tomorrow. is it just the plastic one or the metal bit as well?

better go back to renault on friday.......wont be happy till I get an answer.:(

The cars are allowed under Renault warrantly to burn 1 liter per 600 miles.
So long as the warning lights not on you should be fine.
Sounds like the garage havn't changed the sump washer though if you don't chance it it leaks either than or it needs tigthening up.
Its no huge issues I'd change the oils ever 6k anyway (or year) anyway and change the washer and top up when you need to.

That's loads, but you know more than me, so a little less worried about it now.
will be taking it to renault anyway for a clutch problem, i'll get them to check it over.

Thankyou all.

just the plastic cover, and you'll look for oil on the metal casting. looks as though it might have been spilled when filling the oil up...

Worth a look!

Renault say 1l per 1000 miles
1 liter per 100Km's I thought from memory which is about 600 miles.
My Williams burns about 1 liter per 2~3k at a guess and thats on a slightly worn bottom end.

1Litre per 1000miles is right, but that would be a hard 1000 !
That would be track work none stop and a bad engine my Williams isn't to good bottom end and even on track it doesn't loose that much.

Do a test, top it up when cold, take your time do it slow.

Then drive as you do for a week, then check it again when cold.

Voila!!!!!!!!!!

hahaha! 1 litre per thousand miles, I guess my car isnt covered again as I have lost 5 litres since the last service 5k ago, it all came out in one go though.:(

It is fairly common for some engines to burn oil as a normal trait.

I always check the oil with the dipstick when cold...just don't trust the electronic gauge

I trusted the lights when they flashed at me shouting stop! stop! lol.

i've been having a similar problem..
I've had the SERV light & the 'oil -------'

This only seems to happen when it's been reversed on my drive?? (it's a little sloped, not too much)

I check the dip stick & it was half way between Max & Min
I did an oil change yesterday so will see how mine is now (see if the lights still come on)

You got yours sorted now??

I noticed a mention about oil on the top of the engine and it being a problem & common?
Anyone got any pics of this? mine seems to have a bit of oil on the top.
1 month till 3 years old, so need to get it looked at if it's not right.

All seems perfect now, the car was running funny because i disconnected something. <-------muppet.

I would get it checked out asap, as if your oil pump is getting blocked it will do the same as mine. You dont want the engine to sieze up out of warranty.

I think your right, will need to get it booked in,
I've changed the oil, so the levels are fine now (it wasn't that low when i emptied it) so i'l lsee if the lights come on again now.
But i think i will book it in for the oil on top of the engine. it's not alot, but there is some there (am i being picky??)
