White 182 Track Car

  Clio 182 Track Car
Hi all, New member here and new to Clio ownership. I was previously using an old Mazda MX5 for trackdays but last year it was time to change vehicle. Having seen loads of these Clios flying round tracks i decided to give one a go.

A good friend and owner of a awesome Trophy helped me locate the 182 from a local lad. Unfortunately i don't have any pictures from first purchase but was basically a standard 182 FF with a crackle map and stainless exhaust.

After sorting out a major oil leak and carrying out a full service i got her straight out on track at Keevil Airfield (middle of last year).

It was immediately apparent that the old girl needed refreshing so got some H&R lowering springs on her, Powerflex poly bushing throughout, Braided brake hose, new discs and pads all round, and starting stripping the interior like all good track day cars. Done a few more trackdays including Castle Combe and thruxton and loved every minute of it. I booked a second track day at Thruxton again as its a fairly local track to me and so much fun but got some sticky tyres as the standard road going tyres previously got destroyed on track.

Seeing as the little Clio and i had bonded so well i done a few upgrades over the winter just gone which included a cage, rear strut brace, whiteline rear anti roll bar, a/c delete kit, 10mm axle spacers and a little more weight loss.

Picture taken last week, cleaned up and reading for ClioSport Saturday in August 2015 :-

Cheers Greeny!

The cage was an eBay purchase, very reasonably priced but it is supplied unpainted without a bolt kit or spreader plates which i was aware of prior to purchase.

Replacement seats got delivered today. Just got the simple task of making them fit as direct fit sub-frames do not exist.

It's a Janspeed system but with a custom de-cat pipe. Sounds very similar to other systems i've heard. In regards to powerflex bushes, i bought all mine via Euro Car Parts as they are a stockist and do me good discounts as good customer.

Been fine tuning my bucket seat and harness setup ready for Thruxton next month. I added in a seat runner which raised the seat but now have it to my liking.

Got the blue rims fitted with my Nankang NS-ZR track tyres last night along with the new tow straps. For me personally it works and nice to see some colour on an otherwise boring silver car.

The only thing I would say is that the standard 172 wheels are quite heavy. If it were me I'd be finding a set of cheap 15 inch wheels. Tyres will be cheaper too. Looking good all the same

Long term i think i will end up with some light weight 15" rims. For now though i can run road tyres and track tyres.
Wish i had towing on licence!!!!

So i was having a great time at Thruxton Race Circuit until the engine went pop in the afternoon and i had to be recovered home

I then spotted some shiny bits of metal sitting in my exhaust pipes

I've yet to open up the engine but i'm fully expecting to find a missing piston.

A replacement 172 engine has been fitted and remapped which runs pretty sweet and feels quicker the old unit. This was a while ago now but havent used it much untill now. A change of career means no more company car so the clio will be my daily drive.

I decided to go back to standard seats, belts and some interior etc to make it more usable. I wanted to tidy uo the bodywork and ended up doing a respray as the silver bores me to tears

Thought i'd upload some pictures of the respray journey.

I started by doing as much stripping and flatting off at home and then driving it to the bodyshop to finish the prep work.

I took a day off work and got everything painted in one day. Space in the paint room is limited so had to paint the body and panels separately in shifts throughout the day but got all done inside of approx 9 hours
