why cant I find a tidy 172?

  1.8 16v, Iceberg ph1 172
Getting really annoyed now, Ive been looking for a standard ph1 172 for weeks ideally with less than 80k but everyone I come across is either scruffy or some one has mucked about with it. What do you peeps think of the one at Oaklands on Autotrader? would link it if i was capable. Dom

Post up the page link for it.

How far from your area have you been looking ?? What is your budget ?

Im possibly trying to be too fussy to be honest, max £3000 dont mind travelling but hate the dissappointment when you get there and it looked so much better in the photos. that one in the first link above has been around for ages which puts me off

But why?

Maybe everyone else thats looking for one is in the same mind-set

It could be minted or it might be a pup!

Imo - 3k isn't likely to get you a nice mk2 172, i'd go with spending around £500 more.

If it was the difference between a pup and a well maintained example id go to paris for it tbh
Agreed, i'm always willing to travel if the cars as mint as folk tell me it is. I looked at going to Scotland countless times in the past.

it is but I cant stretch to 3500 let alone 3995, is that one a late ph1 with ph2 bits like seats and steering wheel?

Buy cheap buy twice.

no point in buying a cheap ass 172 just because of your budget. i would rather not have one and save a bit and get a minter. i could have gone out and bought a 172 for 2k but whats the point? it would be a dog and probably fall to pieces.

Saving up and buying something proper FTW

Dont forget the saying... Diamonds in the ruff... both my 172's were lightly "chaved" but for very little money i returned them to standard former glory & sold the pikey parts on for profit!

You should get a decent Ph1 for £3000 mate,I picked up a Ph2 yesterday on an 02 plate with 48k miles with service history and belts done for £3200 because i was willing to do a 14 hour round trip

For 3k i'd be expecting the mintest ph1 172 ever. I think he's on about a ph2 though, in which case a struggle on that budget to find a mint one imo.

PH1 on low miles and MINT for 3k is a bargin imo, chances are over the next couple of years you could spend a grand on wear and tear and still have a good as new ph1 to drive for years to come.

I think that that one belongs to someone on here ? I have deffo seen it on here before.

Aye?

It looks very very tidy indeed, if the belts have been done then id offer £2800.

If not £2500-£2650?

I looked at 4 before i got mine. mine needed a few things, but i knew what they were.

1 guy tried flogging me a car with dodgy ABS. it cut in everytime you used it, he said its because of the cars performance! lol

Just keep looking, there will be a nice one out there at the money you want to pay...

I looked at a few before finding a decent one.

Paid £2350 for 66k mile sunflower ph1 it need 2 rear shocks but other than that it's not bad but it is 7 years old so has the odd small mark, the steering wheels seen better days and the wheels could do with a refurb so for £3k could be made into a very good example.

ah gutted that flame red one sold yesterday and I was planning to go and see it

Sorry m8, guess i had beaten you too it ... I put a deposit down on it yesterday :) I had to travel 3.5 hours each way too look at it mind. But it just seems at the moment that all the honest straight cars are being snapped up ever so quick. I myself had missed a few good cars previous to this one and couldnt let this go. :dapprove:
