Gents....
I have a large update to come, but I will start by saying I lost a lot of enthusiasm for this thread as when I bought a new Mac, I removed all of my files from my phone and Idevices and put them on the Mac, a week into Mac ownership the catching went corrupt!
This meant I lost A LOT of progress photos and I got rather disheartened!
But fear not! We are a small step closer to a track day!
I'll update this thread over the next couple of days, but I'll leave you with this sneak peak

September 2017 Update
Hey guys,
I’ll try and keep this as brief as possible...
I’ll do a few separate updates with more elaboration but for now, heres just a list of stuff!:grinning:
So, Whats been done?
Exterior
Removed 172 wheels
Removed rear wiper
Removed spoiler, cleaned and refitted
Removed side trims (ready for paint)

Since the car has been up on stands, all sorts of items have knocked into it,
so its gained some garage war wounds along the way.
I’m not fussed about them at all, but I may wrap parts of the car at some point, we’ll see!
Interior
Removed remaining tar and adhesive with Jelsol (Honestly, go buy this product!)
Drilled a hole for a harness eye bolt
Fitted all harness eye bolts
Vacuumed everywhere
Wiped out interior
Fitted JonFoz seat mounts
Fitted drivers seat with runner (Various drivers)
Fitted passenger seat without runner
Fitted harnesses (need adjusting)
Fitted OMP boss kit

The project has taken a fair while to get to this point but I've learnt loads along the way
I'll have some more time on the car over the winter months as I'm not as busy at work now.
I've also recently started to work days again which means sociable hours!
I need you all to think of a funny HASHTAG.. something unique to the car.
something that'll stand out and I'll get it printed and stuck on the car…
This will be the cars “Name” and how people find it on social media if they want to!
Just to clarify, this is just for a laugh, so don't think I'm social media crazy or fishing for the likes

Something like this but I think they're used too often...
Something funny, and I don't mind a bit of profanity but keep it quite clean as I've got children

So the first detailed update
Brake Ducts
I bought a cheap set of ducts on eBay that came with pipe work.
After getting the fog light covers off the car, I quickly realised it was going to be a tight fit!
So I got the heat gun out and used that to soften both parts.
After a bit of messing about, I'd managed to get it on slightly.
Once I'd got to this stage, it was easy to get the remainder pushed into place
Then came what I thought would be the easy bit... just put it in place Karlos, job done! ERM NO:laughing:
Good job I had that heat gun out!
So it turns out that the ducts would foul on pretty much every bracket, so I had two options
- Either cut out the offending brackets
- buy a more expensive kit that would fit perfectly
Yeah... so I went with the 'chop stuff up' option!
Taking pieces out
So here it looks like I've removed too much of the bracket.
For me to get the duct in place it had to go in on an angle, so this is why more cutting was involved.
Below you can see that with the bumper refitted to the car, it was a very tight fit on the chassis.
Not a bother though as the bumper will be on quick release buttons
This will mean the ducts will go on Nd off with the bumper.
Would I do it again... YES!
Even though there was a fair amount of work I didn't realise needed doing, it was quite fun:up:

Interior
So, as many of you are aware from previous updates, I'd completely stripped the interior.
However, I had a fair amount of work left to do before I could fit the seats.
First step was to use Gelsol on the remainder of any adhesive inside the car.
Next was to give the interior a vacuum and then a thorough clean after the chemicals used so far.
With this done I was able to get the @JON FOZ lower seat frames in:up:
The seats as they arrived
Corbeau Clubsports with runners and mounts
Note to all when buying these seats, they don't come with a fitting kit.
That wasn't much of a problem though as I'd bought nuts and bolts for the FOZ Frames.
So with the the interior all tidied I got really itchy feet for fitting the steering wheel
OMP Targa 330mm Suede :smile:
I then got the seats mounted in place...
Admittedly I did this prematurely.
However, I was too excited to see how it all felt to sit in the seats, so did it anyway.
Once mounted I quickly realised that something was wrong.
When I'd sat in the car, I felt like I was sat too far to the right and not central to the steering wheel.
I posted a message in the @JON FOZ group buy thread and the man himself quickly had a reply for me.
He was also very helpful with suggestions but it was my own fault,
I hadn't adjusted the seat on its Corbeau frames!
Once I'd moved the drivers seat over as far as it would go, I was sat in a much better position.
Once the seats were in and I was happy with their positions, I moved onto the harnesses.
The harness eye bolts that came with the harnesses did not fit in all of the pre-existing seatbelt anchor points,
So I had to source a few more.
The eagle eyed amongst you will realise that the gold bolts are the same as the ones supplied with the harnesses.
I'd had no idea what size & thread the bolts I already had with the harnesses were,
plus I only needed one bolt & plate and another 2 bolts, one for each B pillar.
Anyway, so after I'd worked out what size all the bolts were and what their thread type was, I got the the fitting part
I got the drill out and drilled a minute hole where I wanted the centre harness Bolt to sit.
I then put a light over the hole so that I could place where it was underneath the car.
As it happens, I'd nailed exactly where I'd wanted the hole to go...
More on this below..
This is why I was premature on my harness and seat installation!
Bloody shards of metal everywhere!
I mean, what did I expect whilst drilling metal!
So, I drilled the hole to size and dropped the bolt through.
I then went underneath the car and had to remove a section of heat shield from over the exhaust.
Once that was out of the way it was easy enough to fit the strengthening plate.
A little fiddly, but I put a socket and extension onto the plate and spun it.
Making sure to stay straight and level with the bolt, it caught on and spun its way home!
Lucky me really as I thought it would be a two man job!
The reason I wanted the plate to sit in this location...
Quite literally because it WOULDN'T foul on anything here.
Everywhere else in the centre console was either inaccessible or something would foul.
The cable you see is the handbrake cable and it WILL NOT foul.
The picture below shows where the plate was going to sit once tight,
but this was taken before the bolt was in (obviously) :laughing:
Passenger seat all in!
This side sits lower due to not having rails fitted
It's also sat quite far back, meaning that I'll be able to have a good peripheral view.

Looks like he's only using 4 point mate. I prefer 6 point myself as you say the 4 points can ride up a bit.
Aye, same harness as mine. So that plate can be used without welding to fit under my seat for the additional strap for a 5/6 point?

Yeah it'd need to be mounted underneath or drill a hole in the floor to accept the nut when the plate is flipped over and then weld around the plate.
I've not welded the plate, the only way this anchor point will move is if it's either ripped out of its threads, which is Highly unlikely or if the plate gets ripped through the floor, again highly unlikely
This has crossed my mind a few times, but as far as I can tell with these harnesses, I can add the 5th & 6th straps if I wanted.
I may be incorrect, but the buckle has the accompanying openings for this feature.
I'm not going to say no, but I'm also not going to say yes... mainly as the longer I take on the build, the more money I get to spend on it
It's a funny system I have, I give myself a monthly budget, if I don't use it, it's added to next months :up:
In all seriousness, I'd love to get it out this year, but I'll take each day as it comes.
I'm off to Canada in the morning gents, to surprise my mother for her birthday, so once back I shall get stuck back in. I shall also get the remaining updates written up on my week away without children :up::grinning:

Evening all...
Please forgive me for the lack of updates recently.
I'd planned to get this up to date but a last minute trip to Canada had the, plans turned upside down!
I won't bore you with the trip details, but I did enjoy a fair amount of these... :grinning:
Well it's not a typical "Full English" however, it was rather nice
Anyway, on my week away I wrote a list of items that I HAD to complete, and a list of items that need purchasing.
So when I got home, I had a flat out session on the car.
Firstly I removed this messy lump...
And replaced it with this...
EVOL Mount
As you can see, I've got a slight oil leak/potential historic leak, but I'll be cleaning this up shortly to see if it continues.
Once this was mounted, I got the car onto its new wheels... Team dynamic Pro Race 1.2's... and for the first time in 3 maybe 4 months, it's back on the ground.
As you can also see, the side strips are currently off in this photo, Nd you can see just how well this car was taken care of in its previous life... IT WASNT!!
So I gave this a good clean up
Once this was done I set about getting the side strips prepped for a tidy up.
Sand, sand, sand some more, primer, sand, primer, sand, paint, sand, lacquer, lacquer etc... not exactly in that order, but it felt like I did enough sanding for the year!
The paint job isn't the best by any means, but it was an experiment on my part, to see if I could do a good enough job with the rattle can for potential future jobs.
Quite chuffed with the outcome when I saw it in the sunlight.
So... the next step was fitting....

So to carry on from last nights update...
I've fitted the side strips and the wing mirror covers.
I also had the car up on the ramp next door for a couple of hours to bleed the brakes and give the car a complete nut and bolt check.
When I got the car back into the lock up, I took the rear badges off the car... few reasons.
A) they went in good shape
B) they looked crap
C) well #BecauseRace...no not because RaceCar at all.. it just didn't look good
It'll probably get wrapped or a new "lighter" tailgate fitted :grinning:
I'm not sure about the following, but it looks to me as if this Renault badge wasn't the original badge?
Looks like some numpty has drilled it!
Anyway, if I cared about the paintwork on this car, I'd be restoration g and polishing like crazy... but I couldn't care less
Again, the sport badge was poorly adhered to the car and it was actually covering up the previous badge as that had a poor removal too.
On this car, it's really hard not to worry about things like this,
as I'm known For being a pain in the arse when things aren't quite right,
The other side would look great after the badge removal if it wasn't for the horrendous dents from the inside of the boot panel:monkey:
I then got the car tucked up, out of the way for the time being, as I've got a few things to sort on the Superb shortly.
Look how high it sits!!!
This need rectifying asap!!!!
So... what's next?
A few items are still needed and a few items I've got that need fitting

- bonnet pins (cheap eBay ones arrived last week)
- Bumper pins/poppers
- Whiteline RARB
- Tow Straps

- Steering column (currently sourcing)

- need to make a heater and hazard light switch mounting plate

- Geometry setup
Then... hopefully some track time

Hello all
Cheap eBay Bonnet Catches arrived, as did the more expensive quick release bumper latches for the CS group buy.
So I made a start this evening on the bonnet catches
Please note: I’m not looking for a perfect finish as it’s just for track use.
If I were doing the cutting to a car with good bodywork, I’d make sure to protect it.
I then put the catch in place to make sure it was a good fit and to see whether any adjustments would need to be made.
On this side I needed to widen the gap slightly as it was catching the bonnet very slightly.
Other than that it was a very good fit!
I don’t like the screws that have come with the catches, so I’ll be picking up some small nuts and bolts tomorrow and hopefully get them fitted too.
I’m just waiting for my steering column from @Kelv and a few other smaller items, but seeing the car sitting so high is making me rather sweaty for a set of coilovers!!!

Hi Dan, thanks for your comment bud. I completely understand where you’re coming from and it’s something I am conscious of.
I’ve actually got the proper AeroCatches but I’m keeping them for the fibreglass bonnet.
Once I’m happy it’s running well and drives well on track, the bonnet will get swapped for fibreglass.
There are a few reasons behind this but the main one being that if the car isn’t up to standard due to being a Cat C Write off (I won’t know until it’s driven) then I’ll scrap the shell and buy another road worthy shell. I know this sounds insane, but I need to be safe when travelling at high speeds and throwing the car around.
I’m fairly certain it’ll be fine, but it’s just something that’s been niggling at me.

Afternoon all
Over the last few days I've been fitting the bonnet catches and doing some CAD! :laughing:
So with all the holes cut and lots of fettling, I've got the cheap eBay catches fitted to where I'm happy with them.
The main reason being that the bonnet wouldn't close correctly after the crash,
so this is a temporary fix as mentioned above.
How I've mounted mine (Nut, Washer, Panel, Catch, Washer, Bolt)
The nuts 4p each
Washers 2p each
Bolts 6p each
So for £1.12 (two spare sets) at my local merchants it was a no brainier!

Then I moved onto the bumper catches.
Wait...
But first....

Here I am in my new goggles/glasses for the workshop.
Just a set I picked up in halfrauds... but c'mon....aren't I attractive
:laughing:So.. onto the serious stuff :smile:
***Side note/Guidance ***
One thing to be aware of with these is that you need to do as much work as possible with the bumper ON THE CAR.
The bumper needs to be sat in its natural position lined up in all the right places.
Firstly, drill a hole in he metalwork where you want it to sit
Put bumper in correct position
Then get underneath it and fit the catch rod(shaft) so it's only just touching the bumper.
Make sure the catch rod (shaft) is very tight, otherwise it'll move when it touches the bumper.
Where the bumper meets the rod (catch shaft) draw your circular cut out.
Make sure you're happy with its position before cutting.
As you can see below, I cut a 6mm hole for my rod to push through.
I then gradually widened the hole to reach my desired width.
Another Instagram photo below, looking rather moody.
This shows the catch fitted and flush.
The "popper" mechanism on these is rather strong.
As you can see below, the Catch rod doesn't hit the catch square on.
This doesn't matter though as they've got a great radius to them.
Making these catches a very good item in my opinion and I highly recommend them!
Also, you'll notice the primer to the left
whilst I was here, I ground back some rust and primered it.
I've got one more bumper catch to fit
This will get done when I next pull the car out as it's currently got the near side against a wall in the lock up.
I then moved onto my CAD prototyping!
For this evening of you not familiar with ProjectBinky on YouTube...
It's very technical stuff!!!
CAD = Cardboard Aided Design
Something I'd been meaning to get done for a little while was to Mount the Heater & hazard light panel.
Not having a cheap off the shelf method to get these mounted in a place where you can reach with harnesses on,
I turned to CAD!
So firstly, I set about getting the buttons cut out and in place
I also cut the holes for the clips.
I cut the holes about 5mm further in as the clips are a push fit and spring themselves back out once in situ.
It was then time to cut out around the centre button (Hazard switch) as the recess on this was a lot higher up.
As you can see below, once I'd cut out the recessed area, the cardboard sat flush.
Once I'd made some alterations, I'd come up with something like this
Please bare in mind that this isn't a final item :laughing:
I shall be making a proper version of this soon but out of WHAT??
Thick plastic? Metal?
Well, to tell you the truth, I've not decided.
It'll need to be quite thick for strength and also needs a mounting bracket for support on the centre console.

it was good fun cutting up cardboard and I'm sure it'll be more fun cutting the real thing
Also if the car goes a few steps further in the weight loss stages, the A/C and wiring will all come out.
The same will be said for the heated rear screen (fibreglass item with Perspex :yum

This is very true!
However, it does have the potential to become a very regular track day car and hopefully next year there will be loads of photos.

So whilst I warm the place up with my trusty electric heater I’ve just unwrapped my replacement column thanks to @Kelv
It’s been here a week or so but I’ve only just unpacked it.
So all set... with no idea what I’m doing I’m going to try and replace this thing!

Afternoon all,
Last night I got the column fitted and it wasn’t as bad as I thought.

But first...
I ALMOST DIED!!!
No sh!t! I jacked the car up on the drivers side and the jack was at roughly 90% extension. The car was well in the air and I stupidly got underneath the car for a quick glimpse at where the access point was for the column link, so that I could put the stands in an appropriate place..
I was under the car for around 2 minutes searching around, but when you’re not sure what you’re looking for, things take time... I heard a very faint noise and hadn’t thought much of it, but I looked forward towards the bumper and I noticed the car had dropped very slowly and was VERY close to my chest!
Let’s just say... I GOT OUT QUICKLY
NEVER GET UNDER A CAR WITHOUT STANDS!!!
I’m not stupid, but had a stupid moment.
I know better and there isn’t any justification for my actions... I should’ve had the stand there anyway! I’m just glad I realised what was happening before it was too late.

With the car now on stands, and me having a couple of “Well you’re still alive” biscuits, I got stuck in...
The job did take ages as I’d never done it before and had no idea what I had to do
Quite simply, on the inside there are 4 torx screws and a 7mm screw that holds the column in place.
Then a 13mm nut on the outside(engine side) of the car.
Anyway... with the old one out, it was time for the replacement
Once I’d got the old column out it was all trial and error from here...
I tried aligning the link/elbow and putting the pin in but it just wouldn’t work (for me)
I then figured that if I could get the link/elbow within close proximity of one another or at least sat in line, I could do the rest from the underside.
So aligned the join and got the four bolts in and tight.
Then it took bloody ages to get the rubber back through the bulkhead. It wasn’t too difficult, but awkward iwith the pedals in the way and being at a crap angle hanging out of the car
Access is very tight around the steering components and you end up doing a lot of the work blind as light gets blocked by hands.
After about 3-4 minutes I’d managed to get the correct angle and popped the links together. SWEET!
Access is too tight for my hand to get the pin back in place... so I used my brain
Out came the telescopic magnet
**TIP**
Once you place the pin into its home with the magnet, push the wheels so it turns the pivot point... this will force the magnet off and keep the pin in place
Then it’s just the 13mm nutbthst remains.
Line it up to where access is easy for your long extension setup. Then it’s DONE!
I left it at this last night and I’ve got very little to reattach but I’ll be sure to post up the finished photos in the next few days

Afternoon all,
Last night I got the column fitted and it wasn’t as bad as I thought.

But first...
I ALMOST DIED!!!
No sh!t! I jacked the car up on the drivers side and the jack was at roughly 90% extension. The car was well in the air and I stupidly got underneath the car for a quick glimpse at where the access point was for the column link, so that I could put the stands in an appropriate place..
I was under the car for around 2 minutes searching around, but when you’re not sure what you’re looking for, things take time... I heard a very faint noise and hadn’t thought much of it, but I looked forward towards the bumper and I noticed the car had dropped very slowly and was VERY close to my chest!
Let’s just say... I GOT OUT QUICKLY
NEVER GET UNDER A CAR WITHOUT STANDS!!!
I’m not stupid, but had a stupid moment.
I know better and there isn’t any justification for my actions... I should’ve had the stand there anyway! I’m just glad I realised what was happening before it was too late.

With the car now on stands, and me having a couple of “Well you’re still alive” biscuits, I got stuck in...
The job did take ages as I’d never done it before and had no idea what I had to do
Quite simply, on the inside there are 4 torx screws and a 7mm screw that holds the column in place.
Then a 13mm nut on the outside(engine side) of the car.
Anyway... with the old one out, it was time for the replacement
Once I’d got the old column out it was all trial and error from here...
I tried aligning the link/elbow and putting the pin in but it just wouldn’t work (for me)
I then figured that if I could get the link/elbow within close proximity of one another or at least sat in line, I could do the rest from the underside.
So aligned the join and got the four bolts in and tight.

I cheated and had the heater pointed at the rubber for about 5 minutes, then threw it at the hole and it landed correctly!
DID IT HECK!!
It did take a short while, but I was determined to get it fitted, so once the “Flaps” (ooh err) were through, it was rather easy :up:

Hi all just thought I’d post a quick update.
I put the steering wheel setup back together last night. Should all be aligned correctly but it’ll get sorted when it goes in for geometry etc.
And I’ve fitted the RARB
I’ve got a question or two regarding the RARB setup.
1) - In terms of the threads at the top and bottom, does this look alright? Will it make much difference if I have less threads showing at the bottom? Or less threads at the top?
2) - I’ve got the ‘U’ clamps symmetric to one another in terms of distance apart, but will it matter if the angles are slightly out?
(What I mean is the angle of the metal plates is minutely different)
I don’t think it’ll matter much, but thought I’d ask you lot as most of you have been here before.
After being under the car again I realised that I’d forgotten to order an exhaust mount... that’s about to be ordered and then it’s pretty much ready to go.

You want to move those u-bolt clamps more to the outside mate, closer to the spring perch platforms and not over the brake lines :up:

I’d just followed the “DESTRUCTIONS” and by the picture it looked about right...but I’ll be sure to sort this when I’m next down the unit.
