Broke down waiting for the RAC.

since getting home and using the car the engine sounded unbelievably noisier than it was before. Driving to work this morning and the sound was horrific. Very loud tappy and rattling noise while moving but goes away as soon as clutch is depressed.

Anyone any ideas what could have possibly caused this to happen from a clutch and slave cylinder replace? It was 100% perfect when it went in to the garage, doing at least 50 mile commute daily. When i picked it up, the engine sounded louder than normal and very tappy.

Kris is going to have a look at it when hes back next week.

absolutely gutted by this happening.

sounds like release bearing to me, especially when the noise disappears with the clutch pressed.

Was it a brand new clutch kit with release bearing?

Was the slave cylinder replaced aswell as i had an astra in that would just about drive and rattled it knackers off until clutch was pressed. The spring had snapped on the slave cylinder causing the rattle so replaced it all for good measure.

Yes mate it had a new LuK clutch and slave cylinder fitted, and the clutch line was replaced too.

Faulty clutch I’d say. Only other time I’ve had that is an Astra 1.6 with thrust washers gone on the crank, rattled until clutch pressed lol.
Be something simple.

altho second video doesn’t look good ....

hi mate, heres a massive update on this!

still in the garage now. Kris has been brilliant trying to get it sorted but we are at a loss with whats up with it.

had the injector 1 changed as it went faulty, thought this would solve it but it didn't.
Fuel pump at fault so replaced and still not solved as turbo then went.

Replaced with a new genuine turbo and Kris took the rocker cover off to find gunky oil everywhere (see pics). Completely cleaned down (see pics also). Kris said lifters looked like they were not working as they should as there were black marks on the cam but this was not as bad as usual so hopefully a clean down and freeing everything off would fix. Tolerences were checked and all ok. Apologies here as my knowledge is not great on all of this.
This was done yesterday and when all back together and it was started there is still a horrific loud banging knocking sound. It sounds like top of engine but even Kris is now confused as to what it could be.
Im so far in now and have spent a fortune i need to keep going with it and get it back working otherwise i will cry at how much money i have spent. I know this is mental and had i know from the start this would all happen i wouldnt have even bothered with getting the clutch fixed. One of those things where you simply cant predict something like this will end up happening.

ay ideas or help would be great and i can pass on suggestions to Kris.

Surely a 2nd engine is only £100 ish?

bought one for £300. Has to be a specific 100 engine which is hard to find. Got it with injectors and fuel pump and its fully working with warranty and came from a 67k car.

Theses don’t run lifters. They’re solid buckets ( set clearance buckets non shimmed )

that oil looks abit weird. If it still sounds s**t , it’s probably either finally spat a big end, or somethings adrift. if You was closer I would of had a look at it for you.

Actually tel a lie , I have seen oil like that before. A scenic I rebuilt an engine on last year , the lump i took out had bad service history( lack of oil changes ) that was all like that , including a very clogged intake port.

bet sump is full of it and it’s span a big end
Got a front starter kangoo engine at the unit if needed. Ran fine until pump s**t itself and took injectors out. Pulled it out to fit a 1.9dci into the van

Thanks mate. Strange thing is it sounds like its knockng from the top end and not bottom. I dont have great knowledge of that tbh, but even Kris said it didnt sound like bottom end. Plus there was another lad with him working on it and he said the same.

Its had 3 or 4 oil changes ovr the last year with me and has always ran amazingly, also it was only last serviced 2 days before it broke down again so the oil was fresh.

bottom end knocks on these sound like top end knocks.

if Chris pulled the sump and took the main caps off one of them will have span , or rod bearing.

injector knock will have it chucking smoke out the exhaust as it’ll be overfuelling. Cam rattle doesn’t sound anywhere near as bad. id also assume timing is correct Again.

Doesn’t matter how many oil changes you’ve done , that scenic had multiple oil changes by the owner over a two year period but the mejority of s**t had already done damage.

make sure Chris puts dust caps on EVERYTHING to do with the fuel system if he has to take it all apart , slightest bit of s**t will damage an injector. Fragile things lol.

Probably find dropping in the new lump will be fine. Injectors don’t need coding to get it to run. They’re only C2i codes for fine running/ emissions control.

any help needed drop a PM mate

thanks mate appreciate it.

Yes, been times up properly 3 times now, timing had slipped again the first time on the fuel pump so was done thinking it would fix it, and it was then when the fuel pump failed.

new block should solve it all, and i will keep injectors and pump as spares incase anything happens again.

i will update in here with progress.

Not updated this thread for a while since everything went wrong.

No idea where to even start with this but what an utter nightmare. So far it has cost £2000 to get it back running and tonight, something else is now wring with the car.

If only i Knew from the start when the clutch went i wouldn't have even bothered getting it repaired.

Heres a brief write up of what happened from the start.

Clutch went due to slave cylinder failing and leaking fluid i to the clutch. Other than this the car has been amazing, engine had always been brilliant and it was getting me 50 mile a day faultlessly. So i decided to get this repaired knowing it would then be back running great again.

Picked car up and engine sounded louder than usual, didnt think too much and put it down to the fact i hadn't been in it for a few weeks and had been using a petrol. 3 days later the horrific sound came and car broke down. (Videos above in previous posts of this)

back to garage, diagnosis was faulty injector. Get a brand new injector fitted. still not solved noise and new diagnosis was faulty fuel pump. Had this replaced and still not solved. Next diagnosis was turbo had gone. Bought a brand new turbo. Had this fitted and still not fixed. Bought a new (2nd hand engine) from Renparts and what an utter disgrace of a service i was given by that company! Shocking from start to finish and i will never ever use them again. The whole thing felt like something off that bbc programme.... Lied to about postage of engine, it was agreed to have fuel pump and injector on it yet turned up with no injectors. Took weeks of calls to get refund for lack of injectors.

Kris then fitted the engine with my injectors and the fuel pump didn't work!! Costing me even more as Kris then had to take all apart and fit the fuel pump from my original damaged engine.

car back up and running finally, although a few small issues that were to be re looked at. And then tonight, a really loud ticking sound has appeared. Going to go back to Kris so he can have a look over this but my obd has just shown P0304 cylinder 4 miss fire and P0670.

I am gutted i have spent 2k on a car worth a few hundred at best and now worry it is going to be broke again. Kick myself thinking about the car i could have bought for 2k!

what a story after this thread started out so well just a year ago.

No just needs a new copper washer fitted, cheap as chips. Can even anneal the old one if your stuck and refit.

Sounds like the garage had absolutely no idea and was using your money to fire the parts cannon against it. I wouldn't be happy that parts kept being replaced without it solving the issue.

bit of a strange situation really. Kris has been great, and has seen it through but it is a shame there wasn't a guaranteed diagnosis from the start. Was so frustrating for me that the engine was fine until the clutch was replaced but I appreciate sometimes things can start going together.
Like i said above, had i known from the start i simply wouldn't have got it fixed. I was in that situation where I had already spent £400 on the clutch and disnt want it to go to waste so got the injector done, then by that point im almost up to £700 so didnt want that to be a waste, so fuel pump etc etc and so on. And here I am £2000 later.

I get that, I really do. But there shouldnt ever be a need to just throw parts at a car hoping it will get fixed. I can understand how you can end up being in deep all of a sudden and at that point seems pointless taking the car away from where it is but another specialist might have found the issue instantly!
Especially as it's not even fixed, youd hope labour was waived on parts that didnt solve the issue. Imho of course.

Wasnt the car plugged in to clip? Why did you also spend money on a new fuel pump and then fit the engine with the old? Parts should have been transferred over when it was out of the car!

The engine was fitted with the fuel pump that it came with as i was told by Renparts it was a working engine with fuel pump and injectors. It wasnt until Kris said he had swapped my old injectors onto it that I then found out they had sent the engine without them in like agreed.

With all this injector swapping left and right wouldn’t surprise me is @Brigsy was right, the injector seals (and seats) need to be renewed.

I have been following this drama from the start and believe me when I say I feel for you, unfortunately when you’re in the hands of other people there isn’t much you can do but to go by what you’re told by people that (you’d think) know more than you.

Like Louis said, at least .labor costs should’ve been waived.

Unfortunately it's all to common on these engines for garages to start throwing parts at them if they lack the experience in fault finding on them.

I had a look at one a few months back, leakoff test showed one injector was pumped and another on its way out, drained the fuel filter, metal swarf in it, I quoted a pump and 4 injectors plus drain and clean of the tank lines etc.

He ended up taking it to a garage who quoted and done a new fuel filter, then took it back the next week and they done an injector, then an EGR, then a turbo, then another injector then it got scrapped.

Also getting a grinding / vibration through accelerator pedal when pulling away and releasing the clutch if anyone can have a guess at what that would be?

Steering wheel is also wobbly as in movement up and down if anyone has any idea what would cause that?

Going back to Kris next week so I'm sure it will all be solved but appreciate the knowledge the help from you all on here too.

jeez looks like the 4 bolts that locate the column are loose !!

those should be done up in a specific sequence. Get down in there and look straight up, you'll see 4 13mm bolts that fix the column to the upper dash dupport.
have they had the steering column off ? if so, why ?

If that is the case I'd look into the 10mm nuts that fix the pedal box down as well, since you're complaining about the accelerator vibrating.
the actual operation of the pedal is fully electric so there is no physical connection between it and the engine, the only thing that can cause that would be some sort of movement around the firewall area, that's my guess.

what's going on with this car ??

I wish I knew mate I feel so gutted about it all!

No idea about steering column being off, i wouldn't have thought so unless i needed to come off for any of the work its had done?

I will go out shortly and have a look and then report back.

@Mazz

Is this what I'm looking for? Can only see 2 bolts. If so, it does look like they may have been removed as theres a small circle around as though thats where the bolts were previously fastened?

Looking at pics 2,3 and 5 it seems like somethings moved/moving to where they have originally been bolted tight
