Wow what a great read, not sure how I missed this!

As for the 280mm vs 300mm disc dilemma I'd get 280mm discs as well if I were you.

I've got 300mm discs and it looks great but it's a pain with the tight clearance, wheel weights and spacers/offsets.

Thank you mate (y)

Yeah, you’ve confirmed my thoughts on the brembos. The 300mm setup looks fantastic but it’s a big trade off for the weights/spacer hassle.
Are you running the standard master cylinder or a 197/200 with the Brembos?

MLB

I assume standard master cylinder, can't remember seeing any paperwork for a master cylinder change and bought the car with the brembos fitted.

I had enough time after work today to get one of the front Koni’s on.

The front calipers are in need of a serious clean and greasing, which may explain my brakes stick after a few days of sitting.
What started as a small tap with a large hammer, finished with a large hit, haha

Caliper and carrier off.

Front spring/damper removed.

I gave the hubs a quick clean ready for the new dampers.

‘Old’ set up.

Manky top mount. I knew this was an issue as I didn’t have a fresh top mount when I put this suspension on last summer. I didn’t realise quite how bad it was though

Rebuilt with the Febi kit. No arsing around with spacer nuts

All built up and ready to go on the car.

Fitted, ready to be torqued tomorrow. Decided to try the Eibach camber bolts and they certainly give a fair whack of camber. Im
Not entirely sure where I should be setting them for everything to bed in, so took a stab in the dark and tried to get the least amount of camber possible.

I also fitted a set of new ABS bracket as mine wouldn’t come off the old dampers without a fight. I’ll be cleaning the arch soon and coating the entire suspension in ACF50 to keep the corrosion at bay.

Managed to get the the rest of the suspension on over the weekend. Took the time to clean the arches and paint a few bits to keep things looking fresh - mainly the gearbox end cover and the metal bars the arch liners clip into.

I also sorted the binding brakes. The rears wear spot on, it was the fronts that were the issue. One of previous owners replaced the front pads but neglected to file down the tabs on the ends. They were stuck fast when I removed the front calipers.
These were filed down, new anti rattle shims put in and everything cleaned/greased. The pads now sit better and have a bit of wiggle room to expanded now.

Took the time to get the grinder on the carriers too as they were past their best.

The arches were filthy so got them cleaned. I should have done this when I had the dampers off. Ahh well!

Next up was to sort the shambles that are my front arch liners. I’ve got a NS Front liner on order from RPD as mine is missing the cover that shields the gearbox end. Sadly, the OSF liner is no longer available from Renault, so it was a haggard fix with cable ties!

These were then fitted with some black penny washers and M6 torx screws. A nicer alternative to the awful plastic push fit things.

Minimal pics of the progress on the rear as it was a nightmare to seat the car on jack stands with my current rear jacking points.
I chucked them under the rear beam mounting points and hoped for the best.

Both sides went on without too much hassle. The top mounts are tough to get on though as the shock is slightly shorter and so there is less thread to seat the top mount nut.
Here’s the configuration for the rears for future reference....

Again, everything got a coat of ACF 50 to keep things looking fresh.

Front bumper etc when back on. Not quite aligned properly with the wing on the drivers side but again, it’s just been thrown together as I’ve got it booked in for an alignment next Monday and then it’s up to Edinburgh for the body shop to look over it at the start of next month.

Final few bits done today before the alignment on Monday.

My bass ports arrived for the brake ducts. These are huge! Possibly too big actually, so I’ve got some 3D printed ones ordered and I’ll see which ones I like best.
I did have to hack the arse out of my fog mounts to fit the bass ports though...

I decided to ditch the front towing eye and remove all front stickers to clean things up. Looks far better I reckon.

PMS spacers and longer bolts were delivered last week too, so these went on the front. 18mm so I’m well aware this is more for looks over handling but the result is spot on. I’m running 205’s, so may need to drop down to 195’s if I’m scrubbing.

I also snapped my bloody washer blanks, so we are back to the plastic blanks. A new set is on order, but I’m pretty miffed:poop:
30F8C457-6F48-4C33-AA55-ED0102A33247.jpeg

So as I said, the brake ducts may be changed. I’ve a set of the corvette ducts on order so I’ll see what fits best and go from there. The carbon canister will need to be removed though, but from what I understand, it does naff all anyway? Is there anything to plug if it’s removed?

As a side note. Those of you with Clio 197 brembos, how bloody hard are rusty pins to remove. I’ve beat the s**t out of the pins and they are still stuck fast.

MLB

Bass ports look alright though!

Not had many issues with my pins, altough I do remove them a couple of times a year, clean and refit and now changed for Mr pink pins, definitely the way forward.

Yeah, they are growing on me. I think once the ducting is in, it’ll be better.

Aye, I’ve heard about Mr Pink Pins. I’ll have to pick up a set once I’m ready to fit my Brembos. Admittedly I don’t think the original pins have been removed for a while but I’ll hit them with some heat and soak them overnight.

Update!

Max has got my calipers, so they’ll be machined and refurbed in the coming weeks. I did think about painting them a stupid colour but they are going to be staying boring and sliver (y)

I got the tracking sorted and everything aligned by a decent local garage. On the drive up, my TC and service light was on. Rookie error this. Turns out I’d not lined the yellow dot on the squib up, so this has now been sorted.

With the rear seats/seatbelts removed, the rear quarter cards were rattling a little as they weren’t bolted in. A 45mm M12 washer sorted this and tidied things up.

The bass ports have now been removed and I’ve put in some 3D printed ones from a guy on EBay. A little more stealthy and neat.
I should have the ‘vette brake ducts coming soon to attach to the fog ducts.

These got a coat of C4 to bring the black colour back before fitting.

I also managed to get round to fitting the new washer blanks after snapping my old ones...
These were from Shed Motorsport on eBay and for the price, I’m proper happy with them. They sit nice on the bumper and are well made. Can’t go wrong for £20!

Bumper ready be refitted.
I’ve noticed the driver side bumper fixings that clip into the wing have taken a battering and are intact but loose, if that makes sense? Which is why the bumper won’t properly clip into the wing.
Its a little annoying but I’ll speak to the body shop to see if they can sort this, if not, I’ll be sourcing a new bumper.

Anyway, I got the bumper back on and it’s looking half decent

Next week should see me actually set a date for the bodywork to be sorted.
Also, if anyone has a spare JC5-130 gearbox sitting around that they want to sell, message me. I want to refurb my box and possibly throw in a diff while I’m at it but they seem to be hard to get hold of these days!

I gave the car a once over today while the weather was dry-ish.

I finally got round to oiling the foam air filter. Forgot to take pics of this as it’s sticky stuff and not all that exciting haha.
Found my engine cover and stuck it on and quickly cleaned the engine bay.

Not a bad little transformation if I do say so myself.

I still can’t get the driver side bumper to clip into the wing, which is pretty annoying. Looking at previous pics, everything clipped in prior to me tearing apart the front half of the car.
Is it possible to mount the front wings slightly off so the bumper can’t clip into the bottom of them? I’ve definitely not aligned something correctly which is throwing off the wing/bumper on the drivers side.

Anyway, here’s a few more pics.

Progress has been slow on the Clio over the past few weeks as I’ve been enjoying driving it far too much.

Took it up to the bodyshop just outside of Edinburgh and they seem bloody good. A huge amount of seriously impressive machinery in the bays from classic 911’s, Merc SL’s to the newer stuff like M8’s etc. I gave poor Gally a fairly long list of stuff to sort, with the main thing being to tackle any rust/corrosion you find underneath - including the rear beam mounts etc.
I should have a quote soon and then it’ll just be a case of booking it in this summer/whenever they have a free slot.

I ordered a complete rear beam off EBay a while back as I want to to refurb it and swap them over when it goes in for bodywork.
I Managed to get it stripped today.

Complete unit including rear discs (they seem decent), stub axles and a pair of goodridge braided lines.

The hubnuts were a git to crack. The large breaker bar and some choice words worked though.

That’s the beam stripped and ready for blasting and zinc coating on Monday. I still need to try and knock out the main bushes in the beam but they took some big blows today and didn’t move a mm. I’ve got some Whiteline bushes to press in once the beam is blasted and painted

This spare set of front hubs will be going to be blasted and zinc coated too.

A few bits also turned up to add to the pile of parts I seem to be collecting
0A9141BB-CB34-44C8-ACA2-B272AD42761A.jpeg

Refurbished stub axles from BTT with new bolts. I don’t actually need the bolts now as I’ll be fitting the PMS rear shims, but I’m chuffed with them. A good price and fast shipping as always from the chaps at BTT.

There’s a new bonnet latch sensor and a expansion cap as I’ve lost the previous one I bought last month.
And finally I picked up a pair of the Z06 brake ducts to hopefully sort a tidy OEM looking brake ducting kit.

Here are a few pics from a drive the other night - the side skirts are staying off until the body work is done as they don’t sit straight with my crunched jacking points!

Another small update!

The bank holiday weekend was red hot so I thought I’d spend the day detailing and sorting a few bit.

Managed to finally change the bonnet sensor and fit my expansion cap without losing them this time:rolleyes:
It’s been around 6 months since I last waxed it, so the protection was basically gone. I didn’t have any clay to hand so that step was skipped but I’m pretty happy with the results.

I know Artic Blue isn’t a special colour but comes up well in the sun.

Max has finished my calipers, so they’ll be with me this week. Need to pick up a 197 MC and some BRT hoses ready for them to be fitted.
I didn’t manage to get the axel up to the blaster either, so that’ll be a job for next week.

I’m aiming to get everything sorted for when it goes in for its service with Rentec in July, so they can fit the brembos and sort the axel.

Cheers chaps!

Yeah, the metallic colours that Renault had for the 182’s are really underrated. RB seems to get all the love!

Got everything back from the blasting company. The rear beam was blasted and then hit with some zinc primer, as well as the hubs. I didn’t want to powder coat as I can’t be arsed with it chipping etc, so it’ll be painted with some rustoleum black paint soon.

The only issue is that I forgot to remove the hub flanges from the box when I dropped them off at the blasting company. I told them to strip and paint everything in zinc primer, which means I now have painted hubs...

Does anyone know if these are the same size for all Clio 182/172’s? Is there any difference in size between the cup packed 60mm cars and my no cup pack 54mm?
I can get a set from Febi for about £60 but want to make sure they are correct first?

I ordered a set of PMS rear spacers too. Seems to be a no brainer to fit these prior to the beam going on.

Ive booked into Rentec for the end of Aug to get the beam fitted, MOT’d, serviced etc.
Still to buy (next months shopping list) is as follows:
- BRT front/rear braided lines + hose kit
- 197 Master Cylinder
- PMS 280mm brackets
- A fresh set of front discs
- 197 Pads (Any recommended pads?)

The car goes into the body shop in October, so I want the mechanical bits sorted first before they get a hold of it.

As I said in the previous update, I’ve just been enjoying the car at the moment. It never fails to put a grin on my face at the weekend. After daily driving it for nearly a year, it certainly feels much more of an event now it’s back to being a second car.
I do need to sort those bloody exhaust hangers with the new mounts I have in the garage as it’s starting to rattle it’s arse off now haha.

That's a good shopping list!

Where are you getting the calipers machined? I'm looking to get my brembos machined for the PMS 280 brackets as well.

Also interested to know if you think the 197 master cylinder makes a big difference.

Not good for the bank balance though, haha!

There are a couple of options for the machining mate. PMS will do it for £60(I think), but they will only machine them when they have a batch to machine for stock, so no individual sets of calipers.

Max at M.S Custom Engineering can also machine them. He did mine and I think it was about £50/£60 for them to be done. Top work though.

Honestly, I’m not 100% sure on how much of a difference the 197 master cylinder makes. I’ve been told it takes some of the travel out of the pedal and makes it feel ‘factory’. But it makes sense to swap it out while the brake lines are disconnected etc, and if it reduces dead pedal travel, then surely it’s worth doing.
There are plenty of folk running the standard master cylinder with no issues though, so I assume it’s not too bad.

I’m sure I’ve seen yours at Rentec before. Lovely car and bloody mint too. I’m down in the borders but up in Edinburgh a fair amount so will keep my eyes peeled.

Rentec are a top bunch of guys. Nothing is ever a hassle for them either.

Took it out for a drive for the first time in a week or two today and this popped up after round 20 miles. (Brother took this pic from the passenger seat, not me!)
2DE9C4FD-F99E-4C0A-94BD-5B0B582754E2.jpeg

Stuck in limp mode and limited to 2.5krpm. Plugged the code reader in and nothing came up. The previous owner changed the throttle pedal sensor in 2019, I’ve cleaned the white plug and checked all connections in the bay when I had the front end off recently. Maybe it’s time to give the white plug another clean?

A quick look on here suggests it’s either a dodgy loose wire somewhere or a dodgy TB? Anyone else had this and solved it? This is the second time it’s happened since I picked the car up in March 2020 and there’s no rhyme or reason to it. It happened with no warning sign, then clears with a code reader and runs spot on for ages.

Ending on a cheery note, here’s a pic of the 197 Bremboall machined and refurbed.

Who refurbed them? Guessing they didnt remove all the engrained brake dust first?

MS Engineering.

They were proper knackered when I bought them and were cheap for a reason. Looked like they’re been kicked around the blokes garage for a few years, hence why the inner caliper has some heavy chunks out of it/chunks out of the mounting area. As long as it mounts fine, and stops well then I’m happy enough.

It more looks like theyve not been blasted properly to remove the remnants of brake dust mate, are they raised up or divets? Doesnt make a difference anyway as the bit that looks good faces outwards 😎

Looks like divets or they've been battered to me. I'd have expected MS to fettle them up a bit before painting though.

Aye, they are divets chaps. They were proper beat when I got them. £140 for the pair, so I thought I’d take a gamble on them.

Should be tidy enough when mounted though (y)

Finished the rear beam finally. Big thank to @Romanian Tyre Fitter again for sorting me out with a set of rear beam brackets. Here are a few before and afters.

Sanded down and given a couple of coats of Rustoleum black paint.

Rear beam was blasted and primered by a local place. 3 coats of rustoleum black paint and it’s looking good.
Rebuilt back up with a set of refurbed stub axels from BTT and the PMS spacer kit with longer bolts.

Swapped out the old shitty exhaust bushes and hanger plates while it was decent weather. The bushes were the the KAM racing 3D printed ones and they are a decent bit of kit. The hanger plates were from Pro Am Racing and again, a quality bit of kit.

An old vs new comparison.

The car gets dropped at Rentec tomorrow for it’s service/MOT and a few other bits(rear beam etc)
It not been driven for about 3 weeks so I’m looking forward to the run.

Bit of an update on this.

E63D3937-D00A-4A2C-B1C1-F92FB463DA12.jpeg
Dropped the car on Friday at Rentec. Got a call Monday to say the 197 MC I had was for a left hooker. The connections were on the wrong side. The chap who was working on my car checked a couple of the 197’s in the workshop and they had their ports on the other side.

f**k.

A quick call around confirmed that there seems to be no UK stock of the correct part.

Thankfully, @Romanian Tyre Fitter and his disgusting amount of spares saved me hassle again. There’s a genuine RHD MC in the post just now, so I’ll be dropping that around once it’s here.

Brakes are on, rear beam is going on tomorrow and they are chucking a new set of standard rear discs and pads on it while everything it’s off. Makes sense really. Looking forward to picking this up in the coming days.

Finally picked the car up last Saturday. Had a few issues sourcing parts and I also knocked a hole In the sump of my daily, so couldn’t get up to pick the Clio up for a week or so. The joys of country living (y)

Anyway, Barrie and the chaps at Rentec did a cracking job as always. Fresh MOT with only a couple of advisories, which are now sorted.

The new rear beam is on. In the end I ditched the whiteline rear bushes and went for some powerflex black series. It’s stiffened the rear up nicely and seems to have stopped an annoying squeak that I had on the old beam.
New rear ABS sensors were an issue, but KTEC have them in stock if anyone needs them. They aren’t cheap though…

Braided hoses front and rear along with the Meg Brembos are fantastic. Stamped on them a few times on the drive home and they are excellent. The 197 MC seems to be doing its job too as there is no ‘play’ in the pedal before the brakes bite.
Currently running standard pads and they are more than up to the job. The rear brakes/pads were also refreshed.

I’ll grab some more pics once I’ve actually washed the thing, but here are one or two for now.

With most of the mechanical side of the car now sorted, it’s off to Protek for its body work on the 27th Nov.

Oh and thanks to Frayz for this.

I dropped the car at Protek on the 27th Nov. The day after Storm Arwen destroyed half of the country. Took me around 2 hours to make the 45 mile drive with some dodgy moments. There were some seriously big trees blocking the local roads. Not ideal in a lowered car haha.

Got a call from Kevin this morning updating me on the progress of the car. It’s nearly ready for paintwork, which is good news. The corrosion around the filler cap area has been cut out and replaced. Jacking points are being sorted as are the sills. From what Kevin was saying on the phone, there are a couple of areas they are cutting and replacing. A bit of work is also being done where the rear beam is mounted to future proof it. Pics incoming once he emails me them.

The front end respray has been put on hold until next year as i had to dip into the car fund for a few other bits.

When putting the car back together, prior to dropping it at the bodyshop, I noticed a small hole in the gearstick gator. Pulled it off and the plastic surround snapped on me. New one ordered and will be fitted Soon.

So, all being well, the car will be mostly sorted for after Xmas. I’ll be storing it until the spring and then it’ll be getting undersealed and It’ll go back in for its front end refresh at some point next year.
if anyone has a clean bonnet and front bumper, give me a shout. Colour doesn’t matter as they’ll be sprayed anyway!

Also, if anyone has a spare one of the center console cup holder bit with the tabs intact for the ashtray/bin, let me know. Mine doesn’t sit secure and rattles like mad as it’s missing the tabs.

A brief update on the progress.

Kevin from Proteck gave me a shout and all welding etc has been completed. It’s currently ready for paint and raptor sealing. See pics below. Once it’s out of the body shop, I’ll have a few more to post.

It’s fair to say they’ve done a decent amount of work on it. All the various dings and whatnot have been sorted too. I’m very happy so far with the progress.

I also picked up a bargain at the weekend from a lad in Edinburgh. He had a stunning liquid yellow 182 that he dailies - madness! So if you’re reading this mate, get that build thread up.
Anyway, he sold me his old JC130 box for £50. It crunches going into 3rd but I’ll be sending it away for a refurb anyway. Time to decide on whether to get an LSD fitted now….

I’m all booked in for mid May (18th I think) for it to be fully undersealed etc. So a busy few months ahead.
