182 Cup V Clio Williams

I love the Williams Clios's...they look timeless like my old 205 Gti...the blue colour and gold alloys are perfectly matched and you just know they are special.

I've never owned or driven one and was wondering how it compares to the 182 Cup.I expect the 182 would eat it on a straight and just about beat it on the twistys too but what is ownership like?

granted it'll probably be quicker but not by much

Not trying to put down the Williams there.....l had a modded 205 gti (160bhp) and my 182 would easily beat it on a straight

iv had mine over 18 months
had cam belt done as soon as i got it
had a prob when i 1st got it (popped out of gear) wish i had changed the box at same time as cam belt now sorted tho
also replaced starter and ps pump

other than that hasstle free
i think if its used daily its less likley to break imho
bought with 107000 now got over 117000 runs fine
im very happy with it
 
I had one for almost 4 years, it cost me the best part of £20k in that time (which I have only just now recovered from!), but all in all was the best car I have owned. Something about the Williams that you dont get in a newer Clio is that sense of occasion. Everytime you start the car it feels special and people that haven't owned one will find this difficult to appreciate or understand.
I own a Mk2 Ph1 now which is apparently more raw and direct than the later 172's and 182's, yet compared to the Williams it falls WELL short. Fun wise it doesn't compare. You tackle a B road in a Williams with it's forgiving nature and can get it bent all out of shape and it comunicates everything to the driver so well that even a muppet like me can get get out of jail. No ABS etc, yet fewer seem to be crashed than a Cup which can only be down to the far superior and more composed handling. It's not a nervous drive, it takes everything in it's stride and is simply the best car I have ever owned, even despite the fact it was a bottomless pit where money is concerned.

For pace people on here say the 182's are quicker etc, yet most have never seen or even driven one tbh. A good engined one is easily as quick if not quicker as has been shown to be the case time and time again in the real world. Forget the magazines, drive a well owned one that gets regular use and has a strong engine and you'll be amazed. The power delivery is like an 8v car at the lower RPM range and the whole car just feels so well balanced in everything it does, right down to the interior... which I greatly miss... those seats just cannot be beaten for comfort so I have found. Going in Bex' RSI a couple of weeks ago with the Willy interior in made me feel absolutely gutted that I now have to put up with the hard non suportive Mk2 Ph1 Ikea like interior.

Also, as a side not, if your 205gti was 160bhp and slower than your 182 which probably on makes around low to mid 170bhp, I dare say it wasn't running anywhere like that kind of power as realistically it would muller one.

friend had one, it was no more impressive than my VTS tbh.

Admittedly stunning to look at,
prob a stunning drive when in excellent condish too.

The 205 WAS at 163bhp.....RR at Skip Brown.They know their stuff...it was a 'GTi S' rebuild.

The 182 doesn't have the 'feel' of the 205 but is better everywhere else...speed,grip,safety and better build quality.No real surprises there then.

I was just curious as if a mint Williams came up...and l mean mint....it all seems very tempting.But for now my 182 is just fantastic.....but l would love to own both.

Come on my lucky 6 numbers :)

Jim, nah, it was the best car I had despite spending nearly £20k! lol

nearly anyone that's ever driven that and any Mk2 varient who likes their hot hatches less refined and a raw driving experience knows what I'm talking about.

Dave - you will struggle to find a mint one, imo there's no such thing anymore, whatever one you buy will need money throwing at it, the ones that dont very rarely if ever come up for sale. Best bet it to get a cheap on, restore the bodywork and put a Megane bottom end in it and renew all the suspension completely. There are some quick ones out there, but there's also some right dogs as well.

I see you're local to me, so next time one of the Williams lot are up at mine I'll give you a shout if you want to go out in a strong engined minter... 2 live has a minter and also a track car that's not mint to look at, but has an extremely strong engine

Having owned..........in order of appearance:

1.8 16v which soon became a 2.0 16v Hybrid
Ph1 172
FF 182 with CUP packs
Willaims1
Ph2 FF 172


The 1.8 16v has almost the same characteristics as the PH1 172 in both handling and power but the valver has the rawness and instills bags of confidence.

The Williams is almost identical to the FF 182 in both handling and power. However again the retro renault has the edge and is a lot more fun to drive and puts a much bigger smile on your face.

I currently own the Ph2 172, the Hybrid and the Willaims1 and I would pick the keys up to the Williams any day over the 172 as would the mrs.
I drive my van daily and the mrs has the choice over the 172 or the Williams which are both parked on the drive and she picks the Willaims every day unless she has to go to court or to meet clients. (it dont look good a solicitor turning up and a 13yo rust bucket ;) )

yeah sure, the Williams does handle extremely well,
the VTS is far from poor though.
I just meant it a straight line sprint, the Williams wasnt quicker than my VTS,
bearing in mind my VTS hadn't got the exhaust at this point also, which seemed to do my car the world of good..

times change though,
fed up of the rattlyness of my Saxo.
I want some Luxury, combined with a sporty feel..so looking to upgrade to a 182.

tell me about it Jim... everytime I think about it I cringe tbh, but it's one of those things, I loved the car that much that money was no object and I'd just fix it time and time again at whatever the cost... pure madness, I'd never do that with this one, it doesn't have the same power over me lol.

hindsight if I had £20k I'd obviously not have done it and just bought an E39 M5 instead, or an R33 GTR, but f**k it, it was worth it for the fun and because it got me on here and Williams Clio where I've made some really good friends over the years. Can't put a price on that imo.

Its no contest............I have spanked many a VTS in the Williams, well they had VTS badges anyway:)
And I am talking straight line traffic light GP's, motorway GP's 65 to !30 and on the twisties.

Despite what The Jeasus spent on his Willaims, all my williams1 has needed in the 18ish months I have owned it is a set of wiper blades, the CAT welding and a new brake bias valve..........granted it is still early doors and only on 50k miles:eek:

I'm the same as you Jon, have made plenty of good friends on here and even thou they rattle like f**k you cannot beat the clio bang for buck imo

I swore I wouldnt buy another this time around, but ended up getting the Ph2 172 after a few weeks deliberation:evil: :eek: :rolleyes:

I can be up at Kimbolton whenever mate as Andy is only 10mins from my house.
I was up at GDI HQ last week as I was doing a detail in the next village and thought i'd pop in and see how Andy & Bex were.

How did you get from "identical in power and handling" to a great deal quicker??

He may of been impressed with how the VTS went, as I was when I test drove 4 before buying my 1.8 16v, but they are no match for a 2.0ltr 16v which pulls like a train from 3krpm to 7krpm.
The VTS is on par with my old 1.8 16v imho and the VTR is slower then my Mercedes Vito lol

There are more fundamental reasons behind swapping a VTS/Williams for a 1*2.

Williams will either be broken down or not able to move due to parts being rusted through/seized

iv just changed from 172 Cup to Williams

tbh theres very little in it, granted mines chipped and running a magnex exhaust but the willy pulls from far lower in the rev range.

the handling is far more involved, you can actually feelw hat the car is doing and it instills bags of confidence. I know what The Jesus means byt the sense of occasion too, I actually look forward to driving it, its just bags of fun.

granted it hasnt got the day to day useability of a 1*2 and yes, 99.9% of williams' need cash throwing at them now, but thats all part of buying an old car, its to be expected. Mine needs tidying, but im lucky enough to own one of the more minter ones, plus mines got EVERY recipt ever, and a has a healthy dode of heritage to it too (Clio Cup prize car anyone?).

They are worth it simply to say youve had one in my opinion, i love it to bits! I'll be keeping mine till after xmas, whel ill probably get a 197, but for now, Im enjoying it immensly.
 
Smokey, I spent loads, but I bought it with 56k on it and did about 50k over 4 years... thing is other people had theirs from higher miles in outwardly poorer condition but had no problems... think its purely down to luck half the time. lol

Oh, PM me your number mate as I've changed phones and lost them all a bit back! I'm going down on the 1st (Saturday) as there's a lad off here having ITB's same as mine, so wants to see what all the fuss is about :D

A good Williams will show a 172/182 a hard time. Mr vts_saxo has a 193BHP 172 and the Williams will stay with it up until 3rd, 110MPH after that the 172 pulls away. Along a road the drivers skill will determin whos quicker like any car but matched skill the Williams is softer and rides the bumps better making it easyier to go faster. In real life there pretty even.

I would have a Williams any day. I've had mine 9 months and had no problems. Things will need replacing but this is a 12 year old CLIO. Mine has 49000 on the clock and looks and drives like new. The fact that so many people are thinking about one compared to 172 or 182 shows they can still cut it with todays cars. Finding one takes time but is WORTH it :D

sorry to be a real n00b. the 182 and 172, large difference between the 2 in acceleration?!

there's not really a 'lot' between any of the 2.0 Renaults, it generally seems to come down to individual cars.

either way, whatever you get, be it a Williams/172/182 will be considerably quicker than a VTS day to day. Where you have to screw the arse out of a VTS to keep with a 172 to 60 then immediately start falling behind it will also affect things like day to day driving. The torque from the 2.0 will make it easier to accelerate from higher gears as well as in gear in general. The only real time the VTS being able to keep up is from standing in the lower gears tbh... unless you have a freakishly quick one like Craggy's
 
A.E you still going on about that time you kept up when i had a miss fire and 4 people in the car:rasp: . Yip his williams keeps up to 90-100 then i'm away, one thing about williams i always thought though is that there are good ones and bad ones. My williams (standard engine) was one of the so called good ones and was a fair bit quicker than my vts before it which wasnt standard.

When it comes to round the bends though the williams still leads the way imo, still the best out of the clio crew:cool:

and th fact that mine has racelogic variable traction control, and is chipped, means id show a 172/182 a serious challenge.

I can stamp on the power in my willy far earlier out of bends than i ever could in my cup, and the better low end torque means its just rifles out of coners at a scary pace.

I still say someone at Citroen dropped in the 2.0 16v from the Xsara VTS in that!

That car was absurdly fast.

It was a one off... no other one has ever been close mod for mod... freakish really.

Soulless - Craggy's car ran a 14.3 or 14.4 with just an exhaust, decat, manifold and filter iirc and the silly thing was that 2 live off here used to run the same time in a Williams with an exhaust (which to this day still holds faster times than any Mk2 Clio mod for mod) and on the road would be side by side from 0-limiter in 5th... it was absurdly fast.
 
Yeah I used to regulary wait for the latest vids, LOL cliosport was ace back then! Seems like such a long time ago though!

I remember a Video with a CTR where he keeping with it easily until he missed a gear.

Was one rapid VTS, lol his videos nearly made me buy one!

Fantastic cars, cheap as chips,
but you have to put up with things falling off everytime the wind blows.

got some of it chasing 2 live round Oulton with the whining dog box... love the noise of those things. iirc he's after or got a Scooby now

The only major difference is how the power is delivered which is the same major difference between the 1.8 16v and the 2.0ltr 16v Williams

1.8 16v & 172 = Foot down...nothing....nothing....nothing.....5k RPM and your off all the way to the limiter

2.0ltr 16v Williams & 182 = Footdown.....nothing....2.5k RPM and your off.........5k and you get a 2nd kick all the way to the limiter.
