Interesting. I see that the inner mounting faces were powdercoated.
Apparently, they should not be powdercoated and never are on brand new/original wheels.
Something to do with the fact that the bolts can come loose(?)
Anyone have an opinion on this as I have had a set refurbed elsewhere and...
I have recently had some wheels powdercoated and, as is often the case, they have powdercoated the whole wheel (inner and outer) including the inner mounting face where the wheel mounts to the hub.
I recall being told that the mounting face should not be covered (and never is on brand new...
James is correct on all points.
In fact, the price difference becomes laughable when you compare the factory 205 45 16 with a downsized 195 50 15 when going from 16s to 15s.
For example, a PS3 in 205 45 16 is about £120 fitted whereas a PE2 (better tyre) in 195 50 15 is about £60 fitted!
A few people on the Trophy forum have also reported this. I think it is usually on uneven ground but can also appear that way when viewed from a certain angle. I parked for fuel once and it looked like they were melting on the floor! They drove perfectly and had about 33 psi. It's the fronts...
They are certainly better than the Rainsport 2 (which is excellent BTW), they have a little more steering feel.
Not as good as the PE2 though, softer sidewalls the cause apparently.
They can also "look" flat at times even with 32 psi in them!
The centre bore would be an issue as the Vauxhall's is smaller than the Clio's (approx. 56 mm v 60 mm).
Could be machined out though.
Other than that, would be a good fit with that width and offset.
Surely as your first car, you should be looking at running costs over most other factors?
Have a look at a new Fiat Panda. Absolutely brilliant car, European Car of the Year (may have been the previous model but it's the same formula), no major reported faults with the outgoing model, road tax...
It doesn't say what the centre bore is (the VW fitment is 57.1 so if they are specific, they would need to be machined out to 60.1 for Renault).
The offset is not necessarily a problem in terms of rubbing (although other handling chararceristics may be affected) because it is a 6" wheel so you...
On the Clio Trophy forum, someone had put Cup dampers on the back of their Trophy with Sachs at the front (Renault had ordered the wrong rear dampers for them) and they reported that the handling was awful.
Royal Steering Wheels (based in Oxfordshire I think). Check their website out (Google them).
I have saved this photo for when I get mine done.
The only change I will ask for is silver stitching to complement the silver interior pieces/trim.
It does look brilliant and is how they should have...
You are probably better off getting a retrim and getting rid of the thumb grips altogether. They are one of the most stupid things I have seen in the construction of a car. The pic below is the best retrim I have seen on a Clio wheel.
It looks more OEM than what came from the factory and this...
I was thinking more along the lines that you would not see the outline/edge of the thumb grips, so they're completely covered over. A bit like this (so the grips don't look stuck on):
I have always wondered whether it would be possible to "leather over" the thumb grips (assuming they are in good condition) using the same piece of leather as the wheel rim so you get the shape but cannot see the grips as distinct stuck on bits. In other words, so it looks like a steering wheel...
I still wouldn't use them from what I know of, and have experienced with, main dealers.
If they were so so when they had an open chequebook, I dread to think what this might mean!
BTM will do just fine for me.
