You'll get more enjoyment IMo leaning to drive the car than some external mods but each to there own.
You'd need more info realy to give an idea, the 5th gear is placed differently so that usualy shows low oil first.I'd have a look at the oil level but it could be on the way out or a gearbox selector . If you give us some more info ie speed sounds history i'll try give some better ideas
Just to be the bearer of bad news you should check the bolts if you had steel wheels then realy fopr dissimilar metal corrosion you should realy get new ones plus I'd bet your spending a few quid on the wheels and tyres so who not spend a few quid to protect them with some new bolts and locking...

Driveshaft change is easy but looking at that picture I'd get the driveshaft off remove the zip tie clean the shaft up pack it full of grease and put a proper driveshaft clip on it and try that. If it quietens it look at getting a shaft rebuilt there not to much
Bump start the car see if it runs if it does hit the starter with a hammer and try it might be stuck
If hitting it fixes the issue get a new one hammers don't work forever there not expensive or difficult to fit
They were always calleed stronger hubs but in reality there no difference,
There is an article somewhere i wrote on the differences it maybe in the guides area but I cannot see in there I must have a copy somewhere I'll have a look some time.
Run virtual PC and install xp on there if need by. Vista and windows 7 are a pain for old software hence i use a virtual pc with model pc speeds its fine
