Just to give you a quick model run-down:
172 Ph1 (often called "Mk1 172") 2000-2001: pre-facelift hot version of Mk2 Clio. Some say it looks meaner; most are silver; has all the toys bar xenons. Said to be the fastest, although no significant weight advantage... probably due to mileage...
Sorry my friend, but it sounds like youre living beyond your means. I would sell the car or get on the phone to whoever youve leased it from.

Sorry to hear that. I had a similar experience a few years ago myself, although the theft of my car keys was made useless by the fact that I kept it half a mile away in a lock-up (they thought they were the keys to the BM Cabrio in the drive, which belonged to someone in an upstairs flat)...
I was thinking of taking one or two of the wheels home in my car if all else fails.
I remember that on all my old Clios (apart from my current 172) you could just disconnect the lead to the distributor and the engine wouldt run. Does the 1.2 16v have coil packs or a distributor? Had a...
My numpty brother has been driving my parents Clio around while they are away - he is not insured on it. Sadly it falls on me to try and stop him.
I have found one key to the car, but not the other. I cant drive the car away because my car is here, at my parents house, and they live ages...
If I were you, Id make no rash decisions and see how you feel in a week or twos time.
Your dads car isnt going anywhere by the sound of things and the GTi will sell pretty easily too.
Irrational hankerings can be just that - irrational. It sounds as if your 106 is in great condition and...
Better to fit the F4R 172 lump if you really want to change the engine. I think there are some contacts who can supply a fitted engine for £2-2,500? But how much would you also spend on all the other handling, braking etc mods?
Financially, time after time it works out better to sell the...
As an ex 16V, Williams and current 172 owner, Id say that the Williams easily holds its own against the 172 in performance terms... and then again, so did my 16V.
The Williams was a very special car to me (had novelty number 123 of the original batch) and in hindsight I probably shouldnt...
I dont regret selling the Valver or my first 1.2, but really regret selling the Williams. It was unbelievably mint, had novelty value being No.123 of the original lot and had low miles too. I thought it had to go at the time due to the mileage I was doing at work and the hankering I had for a...
Low mileage doesnt imply as much about the mechanical condition of the car as it used to in the olden days, but its worth getting a low-miler for ease of re-sale.
My low mileage Williams sold itself - and I expect that because I bought my 02 172 with 19k on the clock itll still be below...
Chris - Id set your budget at about £7.5k like you suggest and see what you can get. I managed to get Daipacs mint 02 reg 172 on 19k miles for £7.8k a few months ago.
I was also in the position of deciding whether or not to go for a new 182. Personally, I found the idea of paying twice as...
Is 0-60 really the best measure of a cars performance? We all know that a WRX is great to 60, but to a ton is where a standard 172/182 would make it up.
I averaged 46mpg in my 172 when I re-set my trip computer and did a 300-mile gentle trip from Cardiff to Hampshire, via Salisbury.
The way I get it is sticking to 60 on the motorway and then continuing at that speed on the A-roads. I accelerate gently and try not to get stuck in queues...
Another Renault that will always be known as not quite quick enough?:o Like which ones? Surely not the GT Turbo, 19 16V, Clio 16V, Williams, 172, Cup, Megane 225, Clio V6 or 182?
Wait until the real thing comes out before judging it.
I think a standard Cooper S is about Valver performance (i.e. low 20s to the ton), which is plenty to keep a 172/182 in sight - but certainly not enough to pass one. Autocar fanned the flames by saying the 172 Cup was in another performance league to the MCS, but still, is that what its all...
Where are you leaving from Floodie? If the match is at 3pm, the traffic wont really build until about 1-2pm on the M4 nearing Cardiff. Most of the time, in fact, its pretty clear. Id say you would be safe leaving at 9.30 or 10am to arrive by 1.30pm.
Where are you coming from? I.e. at...
The best thing to do, IMO - and if you want to go down this route - is to sell the Clio privately and give Renault the money (or hand it back if you can). Then find the £1500 - £2000 separately for the Mini however you care. RFS are extremely unlikely to give you a competitive rate on any loan...
It depends on who she is as much as how she drives.
My other half bought a bum basic 1.2 Mk2 last autumn, at which point she was terrified of driving - having not driven since she passed her test in 1997. Shes built her confidence up slowly - and part of that was driving the 172.
She...
Just seen the review: 182 -v- CTR.
Can you really base a decent view of a car on a sub 1-minute lap track? Or say one is better than the other due to a .002 second difference around said track?
Thought the methodology was very poor - totally ignoring the large price difference, the spec...
