1.4 16v or 1.6 8v

  mg zs / alfa 147

Narrowed down to 2 cars now around the same price

a 1.4 16v alize or a 1.6 8v RXE

Which engine is going to be more potent?

I have already assertained that the 1.6 is 90 bhp and the 1.4 is 98 bhp but parkers gives the 1.6 as 0.3 seconds faster to 60.

I am guessing this is due to the torque figures for the 1.6 being better.

please help me.

Both cars are near enough the same price.

Thanks

I had an Alize (1.4 16v). Was a nice car, and well specced, had usual clio problems - airbag lights etc - read all about it on other threads!

Only other problems i had was engine was a b*tch on cold start, but that may have been just my example, when it warmed up it was fine. Went well as well!

Overall id recommend the Alize, was a good car.

From personal experience (owned one!) the 1.6 8v really shifts! The 1.4 is a more modern engine though. My father-in-law has a 1.4 16v Alize, goes well but needs to be revved to get the best out of it.

To me the 1.6 felt a lot quicker - have you driven them both? What did you think?

My previous car was the 1.4 16V RXE (Alize) and yes its a very peaky little motor that really needs to be revved to get decent power out of it, but then I feel the same about the 172.

I would guess that the 1.6 8v would have more torque which would help out on hills, and when the car is loaded.

Once there is more than one person in the 1.4 16V or youre going up a hill or both the car just doesnt have the grunt.

On the plus side Id say the 1.4 16v is more fuel efficient in everyday driving

Fuel aint a problem as i am coming down from a 1.8 16v VVC Kseries rover engine.

I just want the best engine

consensus seems to be the 1.6

RXE is slightly higher specced as well out of the 2 as has rear head rests, colour coded wing mirrors and front fogs.

Cheers guys

Any other reports on the engines would be appreciated

Thanks
