1/4 MILE TIMES

Heya guys, im really gettin into 1/4ing my mates in aus were always doin it, and i really wanna get into it. that adrenaline rush is what gets me i thinks!

Just wonderin what kinda times peeps were gettin, i know theyve been mentioned but officially? and what are the standard times?

also any views on best way of accel? full throttle changin? gonna kill my clutch? and anyone fully explain it for us novices...

i may not really use the cup, was seriously considerin buyin my mates r5 and strippin it out, he only wants 250.

Theres a list of quarter mile times - ones that we have actually achieved rather than just manufacturers figures, in the members section.

As for getting a good start you have to drop the clutch, so you will be wearing it out. An obvious solution would be getting a better one but that means it will me a pain in the arse in normal day to day driving.

Its not as bad on the clutch as you might think. You just gotta know how to work it, feed the power out steady, theres no bonus in wheelspin or bogging down.

The quarter mile times on the club chart arent that up to date...on the whole standard cars driven by someone whos not a complete first timer, run these sort of times - in my experience:

standard 1.8 16v - low 16s

modded 1.8 16v - 15s

2.0 16v (Williams) - 15s

modded Williams - low 15s/high 14s

standard 172 - low 15s/high 14s

modded 172 -mid-high 14s

Mine (very modded 1.8 16v) - mid 14s

AFAIK mine was the quickest timed Clio last season -14.48 seconds @ 96mph. Closest to me was Tim O in his modded 172.

Unfortunately I cannot claim the 1/4 time in the HDI as my own. That doesnt mean however that it wasnt done.

The chap concerned is a diesel specialist in Denmark who currently has 184 bhp out of his 206HDI but on the 1/4 mile time it was at 165bhp.

The torque figure on the car is over 300 LB/FT.

Well do a 1/4 mile and then claim. The Internet is full of people with claims and no proof. I not saying you couldnt but until you have what is the point of claiming you can?

13.2 in my 172 and I have the ticket to prove it.... Actually, the timing gear fecked up and gave me a reaction time of 3.5 seconds and a 1/4 mile time of 13.2 (narrowly loosing to an 800bhp Plymouth dragster!)

Other than that, 15.6 was my best run in the 172.

Carlos,

Ive got no interest in 1/4 mile times so why would I do one. My interest and work lies in chassis engineering and vehicle dynamics.

After scanning through the forum I noticed this thread and after seeing the results of a 1/4 mile time set by a 206HDI with 160bhp, put down the comparison.

Like you say the internet is full of false claims. I also said before Im not claiming it as my own. Just mentioned the fact that it has been done.

Im stunned to say the least with that time! I know torque talks, so to speak - but many other more mainstream turbos with comparable toruqe and higher power figures dont post times that good.

I know its as good as hearsay unless we see the timing slips, but Im sure that a 1/4 mile time like that would translate into a car with a 6-second 0-60 and a 0-100 of under 15 seconds. Im pretty ready to change my perceptions (like with the Saxo VTS), but this one is going to be very, very hard work!

I know what you mean about "hard to believe".

Have a look if you get chance at some of the in gear times of the VW diesel engined cars. Especially something like a new Ibiza that been chipped. With 172 bhp and over 300 LB/FT torque the in gear times and especially 50-70 in 5th is similar to that of some High Performance Cars.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I used to post stuff on here quite regularly about how even a 2.2 TD Vectra is as quick in gear as a Cooper S/172/Leon Cupra.

But those measures are only for about 20mph (i.e. 20-40 and so on). Out on the road youll find that after those initial few seconds, the hot hatch will blast past. Thats definitely what I found with my mates 3.0 V6 TD Saab - great out of roundabouts for the first few seconds, but then rapidly fades away.

LOL! Its just a completely alien way of driving to me - foot down, power, power fades, change...power is back (diesel). With my car its foot down, power not there, ooh heres some more, ok now were getting serious, woah there boy...change gear...oh, no power again (Clio 16v).

u know how mag claims that Mercedes Benz new SL55 AMG (supercharged version) is the fastest production car from 0 - 300kms ... in 32 seconds or somethin..... wut does a mclaren f1 do then i suppose thats not a proudction car. its quarter mile is stated as 12.90 or somethin trap speed of 190kms

Theres quite a bit of emphasis on torque with this invasion of the pug boys! Id say this over emphasis for a 1/4 mile!

In a 1/4 mile power and torque usage would be like a sprinter doing the 100m. That initial blast from the blocks will be all torque (20 metres), then as the sprinter is running until he gets into full stride (20-60 metres) its power with torque and then the final 40 metres is all power. As you can see torque isnt the dominating force, power is, which is why when you see top fuel dragsters people go on about how many thousand of BHP they have, not foot pounds of torque.

but hp is just a calculation from torque so if you don;t have the torque you need to rev high like a CTR to get hp or you bolt on a turbo like Punto GT, FRS, Leon cupraR. clio goes for lightness
