1.6 16v downpipe/cat change- help!!!

  E36 M3. 182
Just changing the downpipe/cat on my 2000 Rsi. all going fine, manifold bolts off, lambda probe off, rear clamp off, all going well, a la haynes manual, until i came to get the pipe between the subframe and front of the bulkhead. The gaps not big enough to let the big triangular flange out. Seems like im gonna need to lower the subframe to make space:S. Has anyone done this and have any advice, cos im pretty sure that if i mess this up im gonna be in trouble!!

just drop the rear part of the subframe down, undo the bolts and it will drop down about 6 inches

Aye, the subframe should drop enough to get it out!

stevie, are you replacing the bolts? Did you buy a new gasket? if so where di you get them from?

I just read the part in the haynes manual about the exhaust system, so all i bought was the part and some sealing paste for the rear joint. after having the whole lot loose but stil captive i just chucked the lot back on cos i need the car 2mora. took it for a spin having re-used the old metal gasket and nuts and it was fine, probly be fine with the old ones. just use plenty of wd40 on the nuts to the manifold, otherwise the studs come out of the manifold and you have to separate the nut and stud on a bench and loctite the stud back in to the manifold.
Do you have to disconnect anything to allow you to drop the subframe,i.e. steering box, gearbox mount?? im guessing you take the triangular plates off at the back, then undo the big bolt on each side?
