172/182 strut top knocking fix

Just incase anyone is unsure how they work or how to fit them see the following -

Thanks to Justin for the washers - Credit where its due :)

Measurements -

Tools you will need for this -
5.5mm Allen key
21mm Deep Ring Spanner
or 21mm socket and rachet (1/2inch is better)

So in pictures.

Need to undo the top nut - The Allen key is vital here - So do not attempt without it.
Put Washer in place.

This is how it should look.

Put the rubber doughnut thing back on again as well - The 3mm Washer clears the doughnut off the turret as seen above.

sorry to people have said they are interested in getting some from me but i am of work ill at the mo, will update this thread when i am back at work and have sorted some out.

I have fitted these from Fred and it seems to have sorted my knocking noise out. It would happen on turning left or right at low speed IE in my works car park and on nearly or full lock . the washers were spot on and made to a high quality . Thanks Fred .

How come most of us have the problem on driver side only???
Sounds like from bottom right wheel, how come just a washer can solve the problem??

quick update no it has not worked . Had to go to local dealers for hatch problem and coming out the knocking started again . Oh bugger

u can pick these washers up from local fixing/bolt specialist, cost at around 20p per washer, just take in the sizes you want and thell get them. if ure wanting to save ureself nearly a tenner

there is a modified pas pipe to cure a knocking under cornering. this only applies to 172 phase 2. Always apply the strut top mod first though to eliminate that as the cause. The pipe is a little pricey and a pain to fit but apparantly works. Any interest let me know.

Another thing-the gearbox mount under the battery comes loose. Check the two 13mm nuts and bolts. The actual large centre shaft on the mount has been known to shear as well but you would know about that.

i'm leaving for sweden in about 2hurs and i'm away until monday

right guys i have got mine coming soon the guide seems straight forward can i just ask how hard do you actually re-tighten the nut back up do you stop straight away when you feel is get alot stiffer dont want to break it and make it worse ha ha.

I'd just do the reverse of undoing it. Use the allen key to stop the strut turning and tighten against that using the deep ring spanner.
Thats how i'm planning on doing it anyway.

Is the 18.5 ID critical?
I realise thats its got to be that minimum to fit over the compression nut, but will 19 or 20 mm really make a difference?

arrrggggg!!! just bought a 21mm spanner and it dont fit it is too big!!! bugger what a waist of money to halfrauds!! he he are we sure its defo 21mm also if you use socket wrench how the hell do you use the allen key?? does it come in a later stage of removal or something cheers

you need a long swan neck spanner put the allen key thru it to sop the piston turnin when you undo the nut.

basically mate when you are turning at low speeds there is a bang and rattle coming from the front end ..this is because the strut are catching on the bodywork..renault will fix the problem for you but probably charge 100 quid but you can do it yourself for around a tenner he he...

My trophy when on left or right lock makes a knocking come grinding kind of noise and you can feel it through the steering wheel but the washers did not fix this .
