172 cambelt question

  172 Race Car
Hi all, my '02' 172 i bought 2 weeks ago has just turned 5 years old and 48k. What are they actually like to do?

Im no weekend mechanic ive been in the trade 13 years, did my apprentiship at Ford and was a technician for fiat/alfa also. Im still on the spanners but not workshop based anymore. I have done hundreds of belt changes. I know its not gonna be no Ford cvh or vauxhall 8 valve but ive done plenty if zetec, ford diesel, v6 mazda engine probe and fiat belts. cant be much harder than a fiat 20v turbo (engine out). looking at the article on the angelworks site showing the build up process for the engine, the timing procedure looks fairly straight forward (very very similar to fiesta/puma Zetec SE)

Am i going to come up against any unforseen problems (tight as f**k crank pulleys etc) or is it just access and stripping bits off to get to it?

Does the renualt kit contain EVERY thing u need?

Advice from specialists or boys from the dealers would be great, Thanks in advance.

Change the cambelt, the 3 tensioners/rollers, the aux belt and the tensioner/roller on that. Also inspect the water pump. PM me your email address and Ill send you the Renault workshop manual fof the belt change/procedure. I think you could do it (especially if youve worked on alfa engines!) but may need some special tools/improvise some tools.

I did mine in 4 hours having never done one before, but i was working in a renault specialist so was taught how to do it.

All in all IMO they're not hard to do.

Special notes are:
You need the 2 bungs in the end of the head from renault that isnt supplied in the kit, and the renault timing tools, DO NOT attempt to do it with out the tools purely because of the VVT on the inlet cam may mean that the cam isnt retarded when you put it to TDC resulting in the cam timing being a mile out.

They also have a free-wheeling crank pully, but im sure you've come across those.

You need to remove the airbox, inlet elbow, engine cover, and thats about it from memory.

you need female torx sockets, to get the crank locking pin plug/bolt out.

the tensioners are easy to get off, the fiddley bit is getting the bleeding cambelt cover off! it also helps if you remove the rubber part of the mount, gives alot more access.

yea the later fords have free wheeling pulleys so like u say probably nothing ive not come accross before.
thanks for all the advice guys, feel alot more confident now.

Just like a ford with the free wheeling pulleys! if you have done them you will piss it mate, just make sure you have the tools! you can buy them off snap on! not that dear, there a bit fiddly at times ie getting the metal cover off at the top, sometimes they slide out other times they play with your head!! the auxiliary belt can be fun if its got A/C etc, you will do it, just take your time, for one of the tensioners you need a very short torx bit, we have a proper tool at work, but you cant get a 3/8th drive one in the ga if i remember, at home u use one out of a cheap set that you have an adapter with, just put a spanner over it instead and get a mate to pry bar agains it to stop it slipping! you will doddle it! The only thing that doesnt come in the cambelt kit is the 2 plugs for the back of the cams, you can re-use them, but i would advise new as there oil seals!

thanks for all the advice guys. what is the proper name for the camshaft bungs? my local dealer wouldn't even give me an oil filter without a full reg so i dont anticipate them being to helpfull.

Hello guys sorry to but in but im in a bit of a pickle, need some advice! got someone to change my cambelt and he said he made a crank key out of metal! said it was missing. Anyway ive heard that the woodruff key (crank key) must be made of special metal and my timing or crank is going to be f####d eventually because of this. Is this true? please help ive got the 172 cup.

The F4R engines do not use any locating keys.

Take it apart and do it again properly, part of the tensioning procedure requires you to cycle the belt over without the engine turning over and you wont do that with a locating key on the crank pulley.

yep and the inlet and exhaust pullies too, sounds like your "mechanic" has cocked up, did he use the locking tools?

  CB600FS
Burp how did you get on in the end? Crank pulley can be an arse without an air gun although you can cheat a few ways although I'd class it as a tad risky.

  ValverInBits
airgun on the crank pulley! you heathen!! lock the crank and the cams and use a breaker bar!

The guide says to remove the locking pin before cracking off the crank bolt. It says use a large screw driver jammed in the fly wheel teeth to stop the engine turning over.

Can you leave the pin in then? That'd be much easier as far as i can see.

  ValverInBits
damn it. I don't have a lathe or anything. Balls.

Spose Ill try the GSF tool kit
"R99017" reference if anyone is interested

anyone know renault prices for the MOT. 1509 tool or a guess at least. It's the cam pulley locking tool.

an 8mm punch tool does the job.

And i whizz off the crank bolt before i put anything on, then when i need to move it i've got a spacer to put on the bolt.

To do the job well you'll need a crank locking tool, a cam locking tool and a cam pulley locking tool, also we made up a special tool to turn the pulleys when locked.
