Re: 172 Cup track toy!

looks verry smart what did you end up doing about the harness mounting points? also were did you get that splitter looks insane !

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

what is that splitter and where is it from?? looks amazing, have been looking for something like that for ages! any pics of it on the car?

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

The splitter is made from hdpe plastic with stainless steel support rods. Not been on the car yet so no pics of that but I'll get them up when it is.

Cheers

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Gave the engine bay and gearbox a good clean today which must be the most boring job I have undertaken so far on the car but required all the same. Also removed the fabric sound deadening in preperation for fitting heat matting.

IMGP4395.jpg

Also managed to break this sensor on the gearbox when removing the engine . Anyone know which sensor it is? Speed sensor?

IMGP4392.jpg

If anyone has a spare that they could sell me I would be very greatful :approve:!

Cheers mate think I'm sorted now.

For the splitter I used the bumper as a template and measured 100mm on the front and then tapered to 60mm at the sides and the cut it out. I then sanded down the edges using finer and finer grit until smooth then polished it using a cloth attachment.

Cheers

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Pushed on today with building up the engines ancillaries and must say I like the look of them so far.

I'm not overly impressed with the throttle body to inlet manifold connection so will be getting a new adaptor plate made up.

Not too bad a way to spend valentines day not that the mrs agrees!

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Its been a while but time for a little update.

Had a trial fitting or 8 of the engine to see what was going to fowl and on what. First thing was the down pipe on the brake master cylinder that i was expecting anyway but by just how much I wasn't. Decided on 3 modifications to cure this issue which did and the down pipe now clears the brake master cylinder with enough clearance for some heat sheilding.

Next issue was connecting the down pipe to the megane 225 link pipe I bought off Fred. They didn't as the flexi pipe on the link pipe fowled on the subframe. After a chop and weld (cheers focrs!!) they now fit nicely. I will be changing this at some point in the future for a full 70mm Miltek job but it will do for now.

Next was to change the fuel sender to a ph1 type with a return port. Whilst fitting this I fitted an uprated fuel pump and 5/16" teflon lined steel braided hose along the original route of the fuel lines. Still to connect up to the engine but have a Sytec FPR ready to go in so this will be happening very soon.

DSCF2027.jpg

Then today it was to fit the water and intercooler pipe work which I am happy with so far. I need to work out how to connect the turbo to the RH inlet of the intercooler as my original route is now blocked slightly so need different pipes.

I have had to remove the rad fan as there is no space for it any more so I'm looking to get a small slimline fan and mount it in front of the radiator to save space.

With the engine having been in and out so many times over the last few months I am happy its now in for good and I can push on woth getting it finished now. :approve:

More updates soon.....

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Cheers mate! Hope so after all the time I've spent on it. I am starting to see the end now so need to look at getting it mapped soon.

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

was it just the brake reservoir and one brake line you moved to make space for the heat shielding?

I also shortened the down pipe by about 10mm and put strategic dent just in the right place with a mallet.

Due to how close the down pipe is to the master cylinder I get a ceramic coated one for good measure.

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Looks great really coming on. Not far away now.

I see now what you mean about the small inlet manifold. I am sure we could do something with that.

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

sorry if im blind and havent seen the spec in the thread yet but... whats the engine spec? turbo? etc :)

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

I've caught the trackday bug after today so I'll be out at any opportunity lol

What was going on today?

It can get quite addictive I agree. I hope to get it on track by June for a trackscotland day so fingers crossed.

Cheers mate, your help is greatly appreciated!

I am still thinking about an inlet manifold design but with your skills I'm sure it will work well. The inlet you have mocked up will fit I think so it could be adapted from that.

Engine spec is meagne head, turbo, inlet and exhaust manifolds, rods, pistons and crank in a f4r block with Clio flywheel, clutch and box.

Milltek 70mm ceramic coated down pipe, megane 225 link pipe modified to fit and full custom intercooler pipework.

It was the hot hatch day today. It was really good managed to get about 40 laps in so I'm chuffed with that.

is the miltek pipe ment for a 225? im curious about the downpipe since it seems to be one of the parts that will need some major customizing.

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Never been to sure of the hot hatch days with some of the driving I've seen in the past.

40 laps sounds like a good few sessions. Any problems with the car or other drivers?

  Ly Megane 230 F1
Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Was it a big job to get it to fit? did it come off the turbo and down the exhaust tunnel area ok? or is this where the customizing is needed?

  172 cup, Impreza P1
Re: 172 Cup track toy!

It was a big job in terms of the engine needing to come in and out to make sure it fitted before getting it welded up.

The pipe was cut at the turbo flange and welded about 10mm further in. It is so tight around there that every mm counts. The link pipe is custom made to fit so that needed sizing up and welded too to make it fit well.

ahh i see..makes sense now. Thanks for answering all my questions. Will be keeping an eye on the thread and hopefully the next time im down at knockhill il see it :)

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Update time:

Thought when the driveshafts were off they should be treated to a bit of a freshen up.

DSCF2052.jpg

Nearly finished the fuel system with the tank end connections and fuel pressure regulator all connected. Just got to get a megane fuel rail connector and join it up.

DSCF2053.jpg

DSCF2054.jpg

DSCF2055.jpg

Fitted the slimline fan to the radiator as the original was fowling on the intercooler pipe work. Looks good and should do the cooling job just fine.

DSCF2056.jpg

DSCF2057.jpg

Then just carried on with the final build up of the front end.

DSCF2058.jpg

DSCF2059.jpg

Started making up a bracket to mount the coil pack on but ran out out of time and drill bits. The stainless box section I was using was destroying my aging drill bits so I'll need to stock up.

Should get more done next weekend as I've still to finish the battery relocation and a few other bits and pieces and then its mapping time!

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Been meaning to update for a while but I'm lazy! lol

Got the battery mounted and wired up through a megafuse next to the battery and a kill switch on the dash. I used 35mm cable for the live and 25mm cable for the negative. The kill switch and stereo hole cover are a piece of carbon fibre.

Wiring of battery cables in the engine bay:

DSCF2063.jpg

Had a bit of an issue when I started filling the brake circuit with fluid and discovered that union for the new brake line going to NS front caliper was leaking at the master cylinder. This shouldn't have been an issue if I had checked the system before putting the engine in as there was now no room to get in and tighten it or remove it and put a larger flare on it. I ordered a crow foot bit for my ratchet as I hoped this would allow me to remove the union without needing to remove the engine but no luck. I ended up only having to lift the engine off the drivers side mount that gave enough access to get to the pipe and all sorted now. Then, with the help of the Mrs, got the brake system bled and a rock solid pedal.

All the intercooler pipework is also complete now along with all hoses from the inlet manifold to the FPR, dump valve and brake servo.

DSCF2108.jpg

Only thing left to do in the engine bay is the wiring of the ECU which I'll be taking to Chris at EFI Parts very soon. All other fluids have been topped up and checked for leaks and all seems to fine so hopefully in the next few weeks it should be running in time for the engine.

Cheers

Re: 172 Cup track toy!

Forgot to add, still got new plugs to fit and I'm going to get some Magnecor KV85 leads to finish off with.

Also bought an OMP cage this week but it won't be fitted until the winter. Just need to get this thing running!
