172 Cup Toy

Please dont just fire those shims in. You'll end up with about 3mm toe in on each side. 30 minutes of neg camber gives 1mm toe in on an X85 with shims so the mk2 will be very very similar.

Looks MEGA though mate, proper :)

shims are on and have given just over 1mm toe in. There's no point in me buying more at the moment as every driving style prefers different setups so will try as it is if I get a chance then adjust as I need.

Nice progress mate. good to see :approve: When Fred painted you're TB, did he spray and mask it or powder coat?

  Golf GTD Mk7
just wondering if he did powder coat, how did he do the TB without damaging it? can it be stripped down to remove all the electronices to the bare shell? or would powder coating temps not damage the unit?

pulled apart and powdercoated? yes, but powdercoat seems to stuggle with engine bay heat

Ok mate, thought it might be more durable :S saves removing them again

I love this car, you just seem to get on with doing what you want and it just seems to always be good and well finished off!

I read a while ago that someone was in the process of releasing a carbon fibre one, not heard anything since but it sounded amazing.

Carbon cage, would be very nice but if it really went wrong then i would not like a carbon splinter to the face!

Would a carbon cage not be dangerous. big enough impact and it would splinter

from my composting days it would be fine, depends which way the weave is layed up (ie 45degrees etc)

Just relaying what I read, was in EVO i think, was a while ago. Think they were claiming something amazing like a minimum weight saving of 50kgs over the lightest alternative, but offering better protection. Can't remember exactly but i remember being very impressed!

Think they were just waiting for FIA approval.

With regards to splintering i think it can be constructed so that it won't (like fred said - is there anything you can't do Fred?) Think bout an F1 tub, the part that protects the driver, strong as f**k.

Found out i mite actualy have to give my car a bit of a clean before its first track day of the year in April as got a magazine there for some fun and pictures.

  172 Cup
Right so did a little work this weekend. One my headlights had been steaming up recently so thought i would pull it off and get that sorted. Whilst the bumper was off i had noticed the front panel was looking a little tatty with couple small rust patches so thought i would treat and paint it.

Then

Sorted! Yes very little update but still was needed and tidies another bit of the car up.

Cleaned up the slam panel aswell

Did have some fun sorting out this beautiful(but rather beaten) XR2i rally car. Well is an i but with a heavy modifed ford motorsport carb'd engine.

Am also consider the next step for the car. Want to push it a little further. Got a week off soon so think i will pop over to see Fred and have a chat.

  172 Cup
Ok so this weekend i had very little to do so gave the car a proper clean for once. Not been cleaned since i went Nurburg at the end of August so was over due really.

So i have LLandow on the 2nd of April so the to do list before that.
  • Front camber/Toe setup.
  • Near side rear top mount bush replaced
  • and ideally i want to corner weight it
Then need new front bushes and will properly do ball jionts aswell whilst im at it.

Some bigger plans to come but will let them slip once actualy sorted

Arrrr i see. They will wreck the paint on the side of the car unless he washes the car lots and regulary if they are anything like my CL pads.

But then i'm more function over fashon these days

its a track car not a show queen! dirt, scratches and dents = good! LOL

the dust on the paint is easy to sort, wonderwheels the paint work, works a treat (polishing boys just winced!) LOL

  TrackCar & F30 330d
I may have to try that little tip, my sliver car is an orangey/rusty colour even after washing it today :(

Very nice cup tho. I do love the track sl*ggers

yes DS2500's dont really stand up to any kind of hard work. Initial bite was terrible at all range of temperatures.

In all fairness i havnt driven the car hard for a while as the weather has been crap andhasnt been on track since the end of last year.

Really not bothered about the paintwork. As Fred said its a track car. My mate is a cleaning ***** so does get annoyed with it time to time and cleans it for me so sort of stays OK.

Fred you at you garage next week as need to spend some money. Just want to get it booked in for some stuff not the actual work next week.

Update
bit of a boring update really, got a set of PF97 pads fitted now. Allot better already and only done about 10mile.

So went over to freds the other day and decided to get a rebuild on the gearbox with LSD. At the moment looking at the gripper as seems like they give better performance benefits. Toyin' with idea of a lower final drive but for the extra £250 over modifing my standard to fit I'm wondering if it's worth it on top of already expensive rebuild. Am considering just getting the parts needed for a rebuild and doing myself with me dad. Anyway I am on the hunt for a responsible priced box to start work on if anyone has one.

Nice plan, sounds like a good idea to source one first then rebuild your spec at home. Look forward to seeing that!

  172 Cup
Got to say i made that update yesterday but as it was on my iphone it didnt submitted when i thought it did so just sent it through earlier but have had a proper sit down and think today. Got the week off work and have ran out of things to do.

So.... new plan, current work is about as good being kicked in the nuts for 9hours a day so dont want to dive into major spending now. Basically this year is going to be a training/learning year for myself in regards the car. I have some stupid levels of knowledge in regards a saxo/106 from a few years of building so thats the aim with this as i do adore my car think the RS's are brilliant. So the car will have a few things done ASAP in regards track preparation which i will sort in a min.

Then during this year i will learn to drive the car to its full potential and build from there in the winter. Through out this year i will basically learn as much as possible where possible through buying/rebuilding/modificing gearboxes, engines, suspension aspects from wishbones up to the rear beam.

So by the sounds of its going to be a very fun year.

  172 Cup
So stuff that needs doing asap.

  • Wishbone bushes replacing. May go for the powerflex? Thoughts?
  • New Upper engine mount & Upper gearbox mount
  • Front brake lines
  • Full copper brake lines thoughout the car with bias valve(Going to Fred for that)

Car looks very very nice!

I know a few people have said powerflex wishbone bushes made no difference, bit of a pig to fit too as they need tack welding in. If you're only wanting to change the wishbone bushes in the hope of a performance increase, I wouldn't bother! (IMO, of course)

Go for the ktec mounts if you can! That uprated gearbox one is probably the best thing I've fitted to the car, makes gear changes so much smoother!

  172 Cup
Engine mounts will just go to standards. Not wasting my money on the "uprated" ktec mounts.
I think i may just go for standard wishbones. Im not swapping them for performance, swapping as the standards are worn

I fitted PowerFlex's to my 172 Wishbones as the standard rubbers were completely shot. Decided to get them instead of spending the same amount on two new wishbones, as they will last twice as long weather they do make a difference or not to the handling...

After fitting the metal sleeves and tacking them in place in the wishbones I took the oppertunity of having them powdercoated, then fitted the poly bushes themselves and onto the car. They should last a LONG time without needing any attention really. It definately does feel like the car is stiffer with firmer feedback, but then again its on coilovers/polybushed ARB/full cage etc so its hard to tell...

With regards to the gearboxes etc... If you're thinking of DIY'ing it and learning, why not try and find a Cup/Ph1 box thats crunching or got input shaft damage, and take the oppertunity of rebuilding it all new? Might work out about the same price as a decent condition low milage box considering you would not be paying labour!
