172 Exhaust & Service Questions

  Clio 172 2003
Hi all,
I've got a 2003 172 and the exhaust has just snapped. Its right next to the back box, a friend of my boyfriend (who's on here somewhere) says its a common design fault. Ideally we'd like to get it fixed but I'm told not to bother getting another normal one and get a Stainless instead.

Powerflow have just quoted £160 + Vat for fitting of a new back box and 3" tail pipe. Is this good?

Also it is due for a service at 36k, is this a good time to change the accessory belt?

This cold weather coming in has given the little car a shock, it stutters when first started until the temperature has got up, does this mean I need anything?

Thanks
El

P.S new to this posting lark!

accesory belt is highly recommended to be changed at 36K

exhaust price sounds reasonable, as lonag as they go back far enough down the centre section

Cheers, I'll get the belt changed then.

Any ideas about it being a bit jerky on mornings? Should I get some decent spark plugs or something!?

  Silver Clio 172 Cup
I've got an '03 Cup and the exhaust snapped off just in front of the back box this weekend. The car's just under 3 years old and 35k miles, so my local dealer is replacing the back end of the system under the manufacturers warranty. I was a bit surprised by that (to say the least), but it might be worth asking if it's covered under warranty. IMO there's obviously some kind of fault for it to be snapping clean off like that on a relatively new car.

The warranty expired early on in the year.

My friend states that it is a design fault and that by getting another standard exhaust, it will more than likely re-occur in the next 3 years (plan on keeping this one a bit longer), so I guess I will push the boat out and get the stainless effort.

Its not the exhaust completl its the bracket not being well desinged which leads to the problem just get either another mount made up or get the exhaust to have soem extra strenghtitn to deal with the forces.

wont be an 03 you have then^^
Doh! - it's a 53, but it was made in 2003 - just getting myself confused. It rattles and squeaks so much it feels like a 1983, but that's another story.

booked in for tomorrow to have a cat back system with powerflow.
Price for this is: £280.

The original price of £160 for just for the back box and a repair. Which I wasn't keen on.

Seems a bit steep though! It still needs servicing too!

Mine from new has always been a little hesitant and jerky once started from cold for a short while...I think you'll find most others are too.

I'd have thought you'd have noticed it before though...has it only started doing it recently? Is it really bad?

Its been fine throughout the summer, its just started a couple of weeks ago. I thought it had something to do with the weather?
Its fine after a few minutes though. Its not really that bad, obviously when you're used to it not doing it, it does make you question, what is going on!

Cheers Mark,
Exhaust fitted successfully today too, looks a treat.
Went for the 3" single tail pipe and a little bit of noise, but only slightly off standard.
Now looking for the 182 surrounds and to trim a little more off the bumper (vibrates slightly against it when first started).

Need to save for turini's and springs next!
Cheers for your help.
