182 Dephaser gone? (Also, My Aux belt looks unhappy!)

  Cam'd Arctic FF 182
Hi all,

I've started hearing a ticking noise and from some quick searching on here I've made an uneducated guess that it's the Dephaser
(Although, it's making the noise from cold... Which goes against the idea that it's the dephaser)

It started yesterday after some spirited driving mixed in with around 50 motorway miles.

Video of engine idleing (cold) this morning on YouTube:

I'm getting booked in at BTM next week and nursing it home (60mi) this afternoon.

From the video, that doesn't sound like a dephaser, sadly. :dapprove:

Videos can be deceptive though. I hope it's just the dephaser.

Thanks for the input Christopher - I think that the engine sounds different in person to how it sounds in the video but I'm quite worried that it's not the dephaser...

Someone mentioned tappets to me but then the noise started quite quickly rather than building up over a period of time and I've heard that tappets generally get worse over time.

Anyone got any ideas if it's not the dephaser?

Tbh that really doesn't sound like a dephaser issue, I had a noisy dephaser for over year on my Cup which gradually got worse but that just sounded like a diesel engine on idle, the knock you've got there is more pronounced. That Aux belt would worry me too.

I've just been out and had a listen, it's lumpy as f*ck idleing (was worse but after an oil change, new plugs and cleaning the throttle body it's not so bad as when I got it) and it stalled when I let go of the key the first time, second time I gave it a few revs and it managed to keep itself alive without my help.

The noise is definitely more pronounced in the video and the car sounds less diesel-ish in person but I'm still worried, not sure whether to drive it home gently or get the train :(

personally it doesnt sound good, its not the dephaser

the aux belt is on the vegre of snapping, then you will be introuble if that decides to take the cambelt out too

How high should I rev it?

Driving here the noise was continuous but I only had it up to about 3k revs - I noticed the noise on an A road just before I hit the motorway and just stuck to 55/60 for the rest of the journey (after pulling over and having the obligatory "WTF is going on?!" moment at the roadside)
