2002 Clio 16v Dynamique - Alloys!

  RS Megane DCi 175

Ok, Im looking to change the alloys on my new Clio...but am completely clueless as to how to go about it. Ideally Id like to fit 17s, but is it possible without any arch modifications or rubbing? I cant do any modifications to the bodywork as it is still under 3 yr Renault warranty, but also because of the 1yr free insurance...which is so restrictive and as tight as cramp! But alas, runs out in Sept.

Anyway Id very much appreciate any suggestions size/make/model/suppliers as I am a complete and utter newbie...

Cheers! :)

for 17s you need them no more than 7inches wide on 205/40 17 rubber. Offset needs to be ET37 and PCD 4x100 (with this set up you can lower the car upto 60mm with no probs)

Thanks for the quick reply mate.

Could I ask though, what are the offset = ET37 & PCD 4x100 bits? Im not quite down with the lingo just yet, like I said newbie.

((Hangs head in shame - ))

172gal - Thanks, Ill be sure to check em out...have you bought from them before?

If you go to Ripspeed (expensive I know!) or R-Tec, they will be able to supply you with a wheel and tire package that will have the correct offset, all you need to do is tell them the EXACT model of Clio you have. R-Tec can always roll your rear arches for you at the same time if your thinking of lowering it aswell.

Cheers Dan. Id heard that Ripspeed were very expensive - theyre the ones affiliated with Halfords right?
The performancealloys.com website seems pretty good, I might give them a call. Have you had any dealings with Larkspeed? Their website keeps popping up, may give them a call too.

The advice is very much appreciated, cheers!

ive got the same car as you, i have 100+ vulcan 17s. with low-profile tyres they are only bout 1/2 inch bigger in diameter anyway and dont rub at all. youll be fine mate.

  RS Megane DCi 175

Cheers Mike, at least now I know what to look for.
Those Vulcans are nice too by the way...Im looking for some anthracite/Titanium coloured alloys, I think theyd look cool with my dark grey paintwork.

Thanks again guys for the advice, my cliosport membership is in the post!

i put 172 rims on my dynamique and they rubbed like fu*k, obviously the wrong offset then?! as they are only 16s.

sorted now though

  Burgandy 174 sport t

i got them for cheap like from a wee man doon the road, mmmmmm!

anyway they rub at the rear on the inner arch (plastic bits). sorted by pullin the plastic back with tie wraps and 5mm wheel spacers

the front i only just noticed the other day but only a very light scuff again on the plastic bits, i reckon this was due to the loona tic drivin i had been doin last week though on some dodgy counrty roads

nothin too worry about?!?!?!?

what wheels do u have on yours

how much you willin to pay for 172 wheels two brand new mich pilots and origonal contis???

I was pretty much set on getting some 17s, until a guy at work suggested just to stick to 16s as the handling is severly sluggish on 17s.

Is this true? He warned me that there would be large difference on the speedo too, like about +5mph? I knew thered be a difference, but I thought 5mph was abit steep?

Thanks Big Iain for re-establishing that tiny bit of doubt in my head! :D Are you sure that it was caused by the wrong offset?
Cheers guys.

5mph is highly incorrect mate... I had 5mph different on my speedo on my last "car", but i went from a 265/50/15 tire to a 31" high tire!!! so there was a major difference in size....

& u sure u wouldnt get any rubbage with 17s with that profile fred2001??? What about with 2-3 people in the back ?

What about when you lower it 60mm...? i guess u would have to get the arches rolled if u wanted to take rear passengers right???

I was initially thinking of 16s with a 205/45/16 tire profile with a 60mm drop! not sure what problems i would get with both options!

& does lowering/exterior modifications effect the warrenty & 1 years free insurance on the dynamiques??? (sorry to steal the thread matt mate but i wanna know this!!) cheers

Does not affect the free insurance at all, Renault insurance are fine with ICE upto £1k, wheels, lowering, window tints, colour coding etc, no problems, just phone them first, People say all kinds of crap on here about how it goes against the insurance and warranty but you just got to check.

Warranty issues : if you lower it then get a problem with suspension system they will blame it on lowering and may not pay out, possibly fair enough, risk you take!! worth it though

see http://www.adrenalinone.co.uk/clio.htmlwww.adrenalinone.co.uk/clio.html for pics of 1.2 16v lowered 60mm with 17" Team Dynamics Phantoms.

Ride not too bad at all on 17s I love it,

Speedo difference should not be bad at all as the rolling radius should stay almost the same as you get lower profile tyres. basically small wheels high profile tyres big wheels low profile tyres.

About to go to Liverpool victoria and they cover all my mods!! for free!!! and dont care about points for speeding only bans!!! Oh the joy of having a low insurance group car!!

good luck

Ok guys, I bit the bullet today and went to my nearest Ripspeed...I know theyre a bit expensive (got 20% discount though) but Ive bought some 17" Wolfrace Ikon Plus alloys in shadowed chrome.
http://www.wolfrace.co.uk/images/ikonplus.jpghttp://www.wolfrace.co.uk/images/ikonplus.jpg

But now Im worried, some say they rub some say they dont? Ive got a lengthy 3 week wait while theyre being delivered, thats a long time to ponder whether Ill have problems with rubbing or not! Is there a definitive answer? Its doing my nut! The guy at Ripspeed said they should be fine, but wouldnt say officially, just the "he knows people whove got them with no problems." line.

Anyway, cheers for the info/advice - at least I didnt have to go into Ripspeed like a half-wit not knowing what I was looking for...much appreciated.

Ive got to tell Renault Insurance next! ;)

Good choice of alloy matt :)

& cheers for all the info noel-pilot! let me get this straight... (i will confirm it with insurance company as well) renault will cover ur ice valued up to 1k, they dont usually mind lowering, alloys, tints etc etc?

as for the warrenty issue, even tho they wont cover me if say a suspension fault happened... Will the warrenty still be fine and cover engine probs n if the gearbox goes etc ? & they wont refuse to carry out a service?

& matt mate, i think what noel just said confirms it if u go to that link! hes fine with 17s & a 60mm drop! But mate u gotta remember.... that when you got ur clio, it came with a 15" alloy with a tire profile of 55, and ur getting a profile of 40 on a 17 alloy, so the actually rolling diameter is probably only around half an inch difference!! So as long as you got the right offset n that u shouldnt have any problems at all!

Connor - Heres hoping no probs, cheers mate.
By the way, Renault Insurance told me I was covered for up to £500 of ICE, and £1000 worth of non-performance enhancing modifications - i.e. alloys.
At least that was my understanding of it anyway!...If you do ring them, would you post here what they said to remove all doubt? Cheers mate.

Chris_H - Nice. Didnt see them at Ripspeed though.;)

i was just kidding chris, i just hate it when they are called girls cars! due to all supermini type cars being referred to girls car and the big cars mens cars but when ur young its what u can afford is what goes!

& no worries Matt mate, should be ringing tomorra, so will ring up for ya! ive got some things printed out about their policy on modifications but it aint very clear....! so will have to ring up!

Noel mate, a few questions
1) how much did it cost for you to get all ur black inserts & door handles colour coded?
2) Did you lower it first on standard alloys then put the alloys on? or the other way around?
3) on a 60mm drop, did you change the shocks on the front?

cheers mate, much abliged

Right will try answer questions.

Colour coding about £250 but it was done at same time as other work so total was £450, place I went to would colour code for £250.

Loowered it 60mm on standard alloys the pics you see on my site with the old alloys are lowered 60mm. then I put the 17s on recently.

No have not and nor probably will I change the shocks at the front or rear, eventually I may get coilovers but £700 is a lot especially when same amount

From what I was told yes Renault INsurance upto £1k ice, £1k styling,

warranty they can only attempt to refuse associated parts, e.g. drive shaft with 19s on they could say no, air con with lowered car they couldnt

And they would never refuse to carry out a service as far as I am aware.

Any more questions email me Noel AT adrenalinone.co.uk obvioucly change the AT for @ and take out spaces it prevents spam software getting me!! (well getting me anymore)

Good luck guys

Fordy - Yeah, just in a few Halfords stores...they were ok, seemed to know what they were on about...they have offers on at the moment which brings their higher than normal prices inline with most other places...I paid a shade under £700...£80 extra for shadowed chrome, and £22 for concealed valve cap thingys...I know guys are going to tell me I paid over-the-odds, but its done now, and I wont care as long they fit!

Chris_H - No probs. ;)
Noel-pilot - Thanks mate, do you work for Renault or something? You may be getting a few emails too mate!

Connor - If youre out there...howd it go with Renault Insurance?
Cheers!

  Renault Laguna Sports

Once the years free insurance is up if u stay with them they will cover most mods 4 a slight increase in premium. No limit on mods and ice up 2 a grand.

cheers for all the answers noel! Will have to get a quote for colour coding!!

Thanks again

& Matt, i was called into work so couldnt ring! and im working all day tomorra to, heres the number mate, give them a call urself! 0870 1289290

  RS Megane DCi 175

Connor - I tried ringing but couldnt get through and they arent open tomorrow...
Anyway, Ill try to get through on Monday morning...ok mate?

If Renault actually allow the fitting of alloys to the car, the only fees involved should be a policy update charge of £39...as for £250 that seems odd seeing as you were still in the free insurance year.

doesnt that mean u should say its getting lowered too mattT? if u plan to do that soon that is... otherwise u will have to pay another update charge soon! so if theres any work ur getting done within the next 1-2 months its worth declaring it now so u dont have to pay 40 notes for everything you do!!

& no worries mate, Im working tomorra so will probably hear what they say in the evening! cheers! see what they say to colour coding & lowering too if you can!

cheers mate :D

  RS Megane DCi 175

Connor - Well I rang Renault Insurance first thing this morning.

I asked about what modifications to my clio would still be covered by the years free insurance.
His reply: You can have any non-performance enhancing modification upto the value of £1000. If you modify the engine in any way or go over the value of £1000, then you invalidate your insurance and will not be covered.

I then queried about whether fitting alloys would be considered performance enhancing, to which he basically repeated as long the total value didnt exceed £1000 then I would still be covered.

I asked about ICE - Id been told I had up to £500 cover for audio etc, BUT he said NO saying that the total value of modifications to the car could not exceed £1000...both exterior & interior.

So I hope that clears that up...and I guess you are covered for the colour-coding respray etc!

Cheers matie for the help!

  RS Megane DCi 175

One more thing...thanks to all for the help...Ill post some pics once I get them fitted!

Cheers!

cheers mate!!

so r covered up to 1000 notes worth of mods interior & exterior? does that include the ICE to?!?! coz im f**ked if it does!!!!

so if i have 2k of ice in my car, that will invalidate my insurance therefor voiding it?! that cant be right :S surely its just interior & exterior mods excluding ice? coz ice is surely under the theft excess etc etc?

cheers again for ringing them mate, much obliged.
