20vKarlos' - Renault Clio 172 - Track Car Project - Possible Disaster

  Ph2 172, 106 Rallye
If you're ever curious I'd pay attention to page views instead of comments. I know I read a lot of project threads and don't comment but still gain vast amounts of information from them.

Hopefully all your hard work pays off when you get it round a few tracks :D

I have just bought the same door cards, did you nee dto buy spacers for the handle in the end or straight fit?

havnt opened mine as going to fit them in a few months when cage is here and I fully strip etc.

I have decided not to fit the rears, seems pointless as it will be 100% track based.

This is so true!

A part of me is frustrated that it’s only seen one track this year, however, I’ve spent a lot more money on it this year than I had planned and I’ve taken the car further than I initially thought I would. Plus, with work at the money I’ve not had the time to get the parts fitted.
I’m hoping that I can get down the Unit tomorrow and crack on with some fettling and maybe it’ll be ready for a few track sessions later in the year.
I’m in no rush, as the longer it takes, the better it’ll be... however, I do want to enjoy it.

I didn’t order the tears as I was never going to fit them...
as for the spacers... yelp, you’ll need to buy a set, there is a lad that sells 3D printed ones for £20 I think, he’s on Facebook pages ??

Sorry I missed this mate! You’re just down the road so I should tag along at some point! Would be good to do a few track days with the Clio Lads as it’s nice to have like minded people around...?

You cant spend all that time and money on it and only do 1 track day a year Karlos

Get to CSF and enjoy it, or you have both Lydden and Brands closeby!!! Go for it

It should be driven not stuck in a garage :::)))))

Small update while I’m here...

A Radiator is on its way... after one forum member didn’t get back to me regarding his Alloy rad, I’ve purchased a standard low mileage one from @JP83 along with a couple of other parts...

The replacement Race Heater should be here this week, the only other thing I need to purchase is hose Clips/jubilee clips for all of the new pipework and Type D Coolant from @renaultpartsdirect

Where do you recommend I purchase jubilees? I’ll need a fair few
I’ve also got a crazy idea that I’ve been wanting to do for a while now... my shell isn’t perfect and if I wanted to put this car back on the road it would need a LOT of work. So I’m toying with the idea (wanted section) of buying a cup shell and refreshing the shell, and refreshing my parts over the winter and putting them all on a cup shell...

Sounds silly but Mr @JP83 has a caged shell (not sure if it’s a ‘cup’ but it’s not essential) that I may have to try and pull his pants down on an offer for.... depends if I catch him on a good or a bad day... ?????

Completely agree mate...

I was silly a few years ago and took a HUGE loan out... it’s nothing I cant afford as we do well enough for ourselves, but it’s a large enough sum every month to stop us doing certain things and at the minute I’d rather have time with my kids when I’m not working.

This time next year should be a completely different kettle of fish, but I WILL be out again this year, Brands is next on the cards for me. ??

I’ll let you know.. don’t worry ?

I hate to be 'that guy' but, if you buy another shell and its a different colour, I'm in dire need for an iceberg rear bumper.

Well gents... SOME progress...

Firstly, I got the column out of the way.

Being under the car and fitting the funny shaped bolt for the column was a lot easier than the last one I did.
A) I knew what I was doing this time
B) I’d split the column in two parts so I wasn’t fighting myself constantly.
No pictures of this, but its in and tight ?

I then got on with fitting all the EPAS stuff inside the car and finding a place for everything, I’ve still got to sort where I want the wiring to be earthed etc, but it’s all in! ??

I may mount this box on the outside of the bulkhead, not sure yet.

I’ve also fitted the AC and PAS Delete kits, however I’m having a few issues... you’ll see below...

Here’s the PAS delete going on

As you’ll see above, there is hardly any room between the bracket and the slam panel (remember it’s a Cat C) but it fits, JUST!
Will this cause me issues with engine movement?

Also the adjustment on the bracket is at Minimum... which leads me to the most annoying issue I’m having

The belt isn’t on properly... I’ve tried and tried to get it to sit right but it will not jump over another tooth! It’s too sodding tight to get on!

I hear you all saying... release the tension on the belt Karlos, that’ll solve it.. well, as above, it’s at minimum on the tensioner and it’s very tight!

Im guessing I need a larger belt?

Im guessing it’s the belt... @JP83 were you running the standard other two pulleys or aftermarket ones?

Other than this, it’s going quite smoothly...

Once I’ve sorted the belt issue, I’ve got a couple of wiring bits to sort and then it’s onto sorting the coolant and race heater bits ??

Then it should be back out again ?

Thanks for reading all ?

"I've used a 5PK848 belt (5 ribs, 848mm long) "

I'd use a bit or string to get the right length you need though just in case that isnt right.

The setup that I’ve got is slightly different to the one mentioned on that thread, however the belt that I’ve got would benefit from being a rib thinner.
I’ve got four pulleys, pas delete, Alternator, Waterpump and I guess it’s the drive belt (no idea what it would be named)

My pants will stay firmly up but some goodies could be thrown in (from what's left at least).

And it's not a cup shell, although theres no suspension anyway.

Here’s a photo of my a/c delete with the same new design bracket.

I do have more room but I don’t have power steering delete. I don’t know if that makes a difference?

Also I was actually sent the wrong belt with my kit. It was to shorr as it was the one for power steering delete. Make sure you have the correct one for your kit?!

@Hyperhatch that photo settles my nerves a little bit...
I knew my slam panel was bent, but I thought it was REALLY bent when I was fitting this and I thought it would be a massive problem, hopefully I’ll resolve my issues with the kit shortly.

I think the issue might lay in my hands... I didn’t take the PAS Delete pulley off when I was fitting the belt and the guide says to do this, which is a bit stupid if you ask me, as the tension could all be taken with the alternator pulley...

I’ll give it a go ??

Another update for you all...

So I got down to the Unit late morning and got started by generally just ticking things off the list.

I started a the rear of the car and lowered the rear axle down so that I could fit the Cooksport Springs.
I haven’t ordered or changed the rear shocks as of yet, but if the car isn’t great on track with this new setup, I’ll order a set of cup shocks ??

All was quite smooth and I got them fitted pretty quickly.

Dropped the ARB

After shot (taken this evening before I came home)

34211E07-EDF6-4CB5-9B1F-DDE3B0D3BCDA.jpeg

I then got a call from my wife... she was about to leave the house so that she could bring me some lunch ????
Nice! I’ll get the unit sorted and clean up ✋?

So I set about cleaning up the unit... then as I’m blowing out the dust and debris from my unit, I get something in my eye...
I had safety glasses on, but it came with such force it blew straight in!
b*****d!!!

Here I am a few minutes after trying to get it out... pulling all sorts of faces ??

3A4BBE7B-EF37-43F2-A2F4-0D497ABEFE10.jpeg

So I call the wife and ask her to grab some eye wash as the one I had wasn’t working and needed more...
I’m a massive wimp when it comes to my eyes, I hate cream anywhere near them, I can’t start having sun lotion anywhere near either as it affects my eyes way too much... so I was dreading having to go to the hospital (again) as I knew it was in deep!

Eyewear or should I say I WEAR ??... safety glasses all the time because this has happened twice before... I think it’s time to wear pit last mechanics helmet or something ?

So my wife arrived and she pinned me down to clean my eye out.. I was fighting against it as I just couldn’t bare it! THIS WAS DEEP!

062CC0ED-F2EE-4E1C-96F2-7DE2D11825DE.jpeg

Anyway.. couldn’t get the thing out so I’m went up to the hospital...

They saw me quite quickly and then the Eye specialist came down, put a numbing drop in my eye, and saw it straight away.
Even he said it was in quite deep and if he couldn’t get it out with his needle, then I’d need to go under!
WELL THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY!! ???

After a few prods and picks, he got it out... it was TINY!!

So I called my wife... “Can you drop me back to the Unit please, I’m all done here” ???
Sure enough, with my yellow weeping left eye and a caramel slice... she kindly dropped me back to the Unit ?
I was allowed to play for a bit longer ?
I was actually trying to get as much done as I could before the pain kicked in...

Anyway... I got back to the Unit 1 hour and 20 minutes later and set about tidying up the mess I’d made whilst trying to tidy up!

I took the front shocks off the car and gave them to my next door neighbour as the top nut was way too tight for me to get loose with the tools that I have and I’ve misplaced my spring compression clamps...

C3BFBCC7-108C-4451-9CE8-DC246380E1C2.jpeg

Then just after half 3 the replacement belt arrived... tried it...it didn’t fit... tried it again... Nope it definitely doesn’t fit...
“I must be doing something wrong”... clearly I’d gone the wrong way around one of the pulleys when trying to route the belt this time... Idiot!

So I got the new belt fitted, it was tight, but it fit so that was perfect.
Tensioned the belt up which was great and set about fitting things back into their homes, or new homes!

When my wife came down to the unit earlier in the day, she also came baring the gifts that I’d bought from @JP83

I’d asked John if he could send any mounting brackets that he had with his radiator as my radiator had been more mangled than I thought and it was definitely a good idea to swap it out.

FD17FA61-51B9-4CDB-B7E7-C0B1CC2D9117.jpeg

So it would’ve been rude not to mock the radiator up in the bay

So that’s it for yesterday’s update... I got home last night, ate food, then started writing this thread...but fell asleep shortly after eating, I was knackered.

More to come

Morning all...

The Thread title has become a reality! ?

DISASTER!!!

After a very busy summer with work and a very well deserved week away, I went down to the unit to drop off some parts I’d accumulated at the house.
I dropped them with the intention of going down to fit the parts the following evening.

When I got down to the unit the following evening, It quickly became apparent that the unit had been driven into!
The wall was pushed back a good 6 inches and the shutter and entrance door were both bent/pushed in!

I couldn’t even get in!

Completely disheartened by the whole thing and having a conversation the the bloke next door, I came home.

The following morning I called another of the Unit owners and asked if he could put a copy of his CCTV onto a USB stick for me, so that I could go through it all.

I then went and spoke to my Unit neighbour again and he hadn’t seen or heard anything, in fact he even had the cheek to say “I thought you’d done it” and then proceeded to put the blame on others...
Well, after a long time trawling through all the CCTV, a Silver Citroen C3 is being worked on, facing down the hill, bonnet open and then the next thing you see is... LAUNCH... BANG!
Straight into the unit!!
The car gets moved and the apprentice next door gets out of the car.
Then the governor next door comes out of the unit in a car, gets out of that car and stares straight at the damage!

So, I’ve caught them on CCTV, give them a call and it all comes out, however, the governor makes up a lie and says it’s only just been brought to his attention, so they knew nothing about it... there are 3 people that work in that workshop, two of them saw the damage, and to top it all off, on the CCTV I see the bloke that runs a mechanics down at the end of the mews, come’s out of his unit to investigate what the noise was!

So, after a very long wait I’ve just got the keys back and hopefully, this time next week there should be some parts fitted to the car ?

I’m hoping to get the car out in February for a track day?

That wasn't a small bump! Some scumbags about, causing that sort of damage and not owning up to it.

When I get a chance, I’ll upload the video and get it posted on here so you can all see it.

?? Caught bang to rights on the telly! What a prick. Has the apprentice still got a job?

The apprentice isn’t your normal type of apprentice... he’s been there about 5-6 years, but the governor refused to put him through college, so now he’s stuffed!
If he leaves, he’s got no qualifications!

What a bunch of knobs!

Good build though, keep it up!

Thanks matey... there are a lot more updates to come, circumstances have changed slightly, but it just means I get a lot less time for myself and the car has to suffer... which it has ?
