Advertising the car...

As the 200 Cup is on order  I need to start thinking about advertising the 172.

The new car is due on the 15th of December, but I can make do without a car from 1st December, as thats my last week at Uni and work is only local to me.

When should I put this up for sale, to ensure that its sold in time? I dont want to put it up too late, and end up with a car sat on my drive all through Christmas. In the same respect, I dont want to put it up too early and end up either being without a car or putting the seller off if they have to wait.

Also, where is the best place to put it up?
I was thinking of putting it on here and PH as they are free anyway, so nothing lost there. But I only want to pay for one add, so which place is best?
People seem to say either eBay or Autotrader? Im personally thinking Autotrader more, but I have no experience whatsoever selling a car lol.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Also, if anyone is interested in mine, then drop me a PM ;)

Thanks :star:

The last two cars I have sold were advertised on a specialist site (honda and mitsu), PH, Autotrader and ebay.

Both of them (and the vast majority of enquiries) sold through autotrader.

I would say get it up asap. Better to have to blag lifts than have a millstone round your neck as cars can take ages to sell.

If you put it up in the middle of December, you won't have as much interest as if you put it up for sale now.

Wait til Nov, and advertise it stating when you can do the deal. Or put it on Ebay, deal with tens of idiots, and potentially have it still on the drive as the winner dails to commit.

So, advertise soon and borrow a car when it sells.

I cant sell it too early though, as there isnt a chance that I can get to Uni without a car. Skanking lifts to Uni wont work unfortunately :(

  200 Cup & DC2
I'm tight so advertised my previous cars where it was free; PistonHeads and the relevent owner's forum.

Civic Type R sold to the second viewer (first was a test pilot who I told to leave) via the owner's forum.

Impreza sold via PistonHeads to the first viewer although had a lot of time wasters emailing silly offers. The guy turned up with £xx,xxx in £20 notes :S

Write a decent, honest advert; no spelling mistakes, good grammar, upload decent photographs and price it right, it will sell.

Yeah, I had my type-r up for 6k and had three people emailing offers of 3.5k. If you dont ask, you dont get I suppose...

So would you say that Autotrader is a better place to advertise, rather than eBay?

Im trying to work out whether I can get by without the car. I can use my dads for lectures on Monday and Tuesday, which just leaves Thursday and the occasional Friday (which I could still use it for, depending on what he's doing). Id have to catch 2 buses, maybe even 3 I think if not.

Have you never sold a car ? It depends on how much you advertise it for. Revels is completely right, there is so many factors, so how are we supposed to know. If your asking a lot, be prepared for it to take a while. I have had my car for sale for quite a long time, but I feel this is due to price, and i'm happy to hold on until i get the right price, and i'm happy to keep it once the auto trader has run out.

Also forgive me if im wrong, but you live in Eastwood and your Uni is Nottingham, isn't there like s**t loads of buses. If some one is prepared to buy it off you for the price you want, i'd snap there hands off, there is so many ph2 172's on the market, and unless you have 20k and advertising it for 2k, it may take a while.

True. I sold the type-r to fund a family wagon and get a cheap runaround. Set a budget of 2800 for the clio and I was literally tripping over really well looked after cars, fsh, 60-70k on the clock with belts done.

The one I finally bought had been up for sale for a couple of months and the guy had knocked 500 quid off his asking price just to get it sold.

Nope, never had to sell a car. My first was traded in with the dealer, and my girlfriend bought my old Clio.
I was thinking of putting it up for £2900 (£2750 for CS members). Bearing in mind it is just about to hit 50k miles, FSH (mainly Renault), Cambelt done and is in really good condition.

I actually go to Trent Uni in Clifton, so id have to catch a bus into Notts and then the Unilink into Clifton. But due to a late finish on Thursdays, id have to catch the Unilink back into the City, then another to Eastwood, then get one (or a lift/walk) to my village I think.

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
Why dont you list it on here on the second / third week of Nov & see if you get any takers who would collect on a certain date..

Yeah that seems a pretty good price, I'm pretty much asking that with an extra 40k on it, lols. Crazy price for the car you get IMO. Cracking value for money.

Oh the joys of living in the city then, must be missions doing all that.

Edit: At that price you can do what Steve has said. And you should get some takers and considering letting it go for a certain price. Imo, lowest of 2,500.

There is no rush if you taking delivery of a new one, so if it doesn't sell quickly it doesn't matter does it ?

Is it really a big deal if it doesnt sell by the time your Cup arrives? I mean noone wants a car just sat there, but if you are going to have to knock hundreds off to get rid of it, then you may be best off keeping a few weeks longer. If perhaps the tax expires at the end of Dec and that is your worry, then add 6 months tax and keep the price the same, rather than knock more off in a bid to get rid.

Thats a good idea! :)

Ive just been speaking to my dad about it, and he says that if it goes earlier than planned, then I can use his car to go to Uni... :D
He works nights, so he's in bed most of the day anyway, but as its his car, I obviously cant rely on having it for Uni all the time.

Tax is until July.
Its the fact that I dont want it sat there all through the winter not moving. Im guessing it cant be good for a car to sit for weeks on end through that time of the year.
In the same respect, I wont be knocking off hundreds of pounds just to shift it. At the end of the day, I want a certain amount for the car and wont sell it for a stupidly low price.

Id say its a toss up between Ebay and Autotrader.

I havent used Autotrader recently so im unsure what their fee at the moment is, but id probably go for this one first in all honesty. The past 2 cars ive sold, ive sold via Ebay (private listings for 28days, not auctions) but thats because i was happy to sell cheap and get slightly over the part-ex value.

The colour of your 172 will work in your favour however, flamers will stand out compared to the sea of silver and blue 1*2's.

I think its either £15 or £20 to advertise for 3 weeks. Ebay is £15 isnt it?

Im hoping it does stand out lol... I think im going to put it up in the next couple of weeks as I can live without a car for a month or so and I think it'll be best to get it up sooner rather than later.

Reviving a bit of an old thread here...

Next weekend im going to be putting my car onto either Autotrader or eBay.

Which one should I go for? Ive kind of had a mixed response with this question, so not sure which one to go with...

atm the autotrader is £40 for 3 weeks in magzine and 3 weeks on website. its usually £48 for 2 weeks in mag and 2 weeks on website!.

Thought it was alot cheaper than that??? Like £15 for 2-3 weeks on internet? Tbf im not bothered about it being in the magazine if it means more cost, because who gets that nowadays anyway...

Selling a car worth £3k, and you don't want to spend £30?!

Put the price up £50 and cover the cost of advertising!

Woah... £30 is quite steep just for the net and mobile.

Might go for ebay as thats £14.99 iirc. Try that first as then I can write out a proper ad aswell.

It seemed to work well enough for Sargara and Faxo recently

False economy.

Yea but if I can advertise it on another big website for half the price, for a month, which worked for 2 other members with Flamers on here very well (iirc both sold within 3 days), then why not.
I thought their pricing was similar to eBays.

Sorry, im in "tight" mode atm lol... Do you think that its more likely to sell on Autotrader then?

Why does it say on Autotrader - 2 weeks from £9.99? Is that for the bargain cars or something?

Sold 3 cars recently. Put them on ph, eBay, at. eBay will give you nothing but timewasters. Ph will give you nothing.
All 3 went via autotrader. A few quid on the ad is cheaper than the car hanging around for too long.

Good stuff! Thats what im wanting to hear...

Did you get alot of crap on eBay? How long did it take to get interest on AT?

Put the wides car on at, sold within 48hrs. Majority of eBay bids seem to be timewasters with no intention of buying.

Ahh good times!! Think I may go for AT then, and stop being a tight bass ;)

Looking on there now, and most of the other 172's around my pricing seem to be higher mileage... Not as many Flamers on there as what there was the other day aswell :)

  53 Clio's & counting
Id say 85% of the cars iv sold through my business this year have been sold via auto Trader.

AT every time

The cars i have sold recently went on autotrader. It seems to attract a better clientele to be honest. The cars where on PH aswell but as said before it is starting to attract a lot of nobs and silly px offers. It is worth spending the money if you get the right price for yours.

Yup ive put mine on PH already, another forum im on and on here (also put on Gumtree last night :S )... Already been offered 3 swaps, even though the ad says that ive got a new 200 on the way lol... Fair play to them!
