Ash's Trophy #258 (Lots of photos)

  PH1 Track Car
Well ive had my trophy for over a year now so i thought that its about time i started a project thread!

I have previously owned a 1.2 clio, a C2 1.6 GT, an Ibiza 1.9tdi 130 FR, and two FF 182s.

After going from a 182 to the seat, its safe to say that although it was fast and cheap to run, it was nowhere near as fun as a 182, so i quickly decided it was time to get another clio, and then decided that it needed to be a trophy!

So i then bought trophy #258, with around 39,000 on the clock back in april 2012.

A few photos from the day i bought it (and some of the guys renaultsport and ferrari collection!)

null-7.jpg

null-8.jpg

and the trophy..

null-9.jpg

null-10.jpg

first things first, i gave it a good polish

null-20.jpg

null-21.jpg

just hit 40k

null-30.jpg

then i decided i wanted a few light mods.. so purchased a rear strut brace, whiteline ARB, and eibach sportlines from some forum members

null-43.jpg

sportlines and rarb fitted

null-44.jpg

null-45.jpg

null-47.jpg

i then painted the strut brace and fitted it, along with some 3 point harnesses than i purchased

null-52.jpg

null-54.jpg

also painted the front diamond the same colour as the strut brace

null-55.jpg

another clean and polish

null-57.jpg

rolling shot that one of my friends took

null-58.jpg

photo with my neighbours RS250

null-60.jpg

i then decided to give the trophy a full coolant change using renault type D and a genuine renault thermostat, and put on a new expansion bottle while i was doing it as the old one was pretty dirty

null-65.jpg

null-66.jpg

null-67.jpg

found a slight leak on top of the gearbox, anyone know what that might be?

null-70.jpg

then it decided to snow..

null-76.jpg

null-77.jpg

null-78.jpg

all finished and looking fresh!

null-80.jpg

also changed the pollen filter as i found one i had sitting in the garage for ages

null-81.jpg

null-82.jpg

then got a letter through the post telling my about the bonnet catch recall.. so booked in at renault leicester

null-84.jpg

null-85.jpg

decided then to chance the standard exhaust, as i wanted a better look and a little more noise, so picked up a ktec/janspeed cat back and decat from a forum member

null-86.jpg

a few more cleaning photos using a friends snow foam lance

null-87.jpg

null-88.jpg

null-89.jpg

null-90.jpg

thought i would make up some better exhaust mounts as the standard renault ones are useless! so picked up a tube of tiger seal

null-92.jpg

cheeky photo of my dads TT which i also drive

null-93.jpg

exhaust fitted and looking much better than the standard pea shooters!

null-94.jpg

photo of my car with my friends focus ST at brands hatch

null-95.jpg

and another friends car in our pit garage

null-97.jpg

null-99.jpg

a few photos on track

null-102.jpg

null-103.jpg

null-106.jpg

null-108.jpg

finally got round to getting the brake fluid changed with ATE super racing blue dot 4, so i thought i might as well put on some braided lines at the same time, so picked some up from Fred

null-109.jpg

whilst changing the fluid discovered a leaky rear shock! (wondered why the car felt a bit funny when cornering!)

null-110.jpg

few detailing photos, gave it a nice coat of wax with meguiars tech wax 2.0

null-111.jpg

null-112.jpg

null-118.jpg

null-119.jpg

null-124.jpg

null-125.jpg

then got my private plate on at last!

null-127.jpg

after having done a few track days, i decided i wanted some more supportive seats, so picked up some bimarco futuras from a forum member (apologies for rubbish photo)

null-128.jpg

at this point i was unhappy with the height of the rear on sportlines as it was stripped out..

null-129.jpg

so i bought some h&r rear coilover springs off of a forum member to get it to the correct height, gave them a clean and a lick of paint before fitting

null-136.jpg

null-137.jpg

the rear now sits much better, but cant help feeling that the front needs to be a little lower now!

null-138.jpg

then decided i wanted a few more little things.. RS rear badge, sparco 383 wheel with momo boss, more solid gear level with short shift pin (which i am yet to fit)

null-130.jpg

null-131.jpg

null-132.jpg

steering wheel fitted

null-133.jpg

null-135.jpg

then clicked 55k!

null-134.jpg

i was then greeted by a leaking front sachs! not such a big issue as i was planning on getting them refurbished anyway, and this will just push me to get a front end refresh done

null-139.jpg

i ordered some koni rear dampers (which finally turned up after waiting over a month!) and some camber bolts

null-140.jpg

null-141.jpg

then picked up some xenon headlamps off a forum member

null-145.jpg

few more photos of my dads TT after it was detailed the other day

null-144.jpg

null-143.jpg

and thats where the car stands today! few bits waiting to be fitted, currently sitting on cup shocks all round (which feel surprisingly good!)

future plans are:

  • front end suspension refresh
  • pure motorsport top mounts and strut brace
  • ktec style induction kit
  • refit the cat (exhaust is a little too loud)
  • fit the gear lever
  • fit rear shocks
  • upgrade to 3" harnesses
  • fit eibach camber bolts
  • full suspension geometry set up
  • spacers/rear camber shims
  • fit xenon headlamps
  • possibly get a 4/6 point cage
  • decent brake pads

after the suspension and brakes are sorted, ill possibly look at some mods to get a bit more power

any comments/suggestions welcome!

You need to give your neighbour a good shake! That wheels on the megane are horrific! I hope they were winter wheels?

Good progress though? Cars come on a fair bit :)

They were indeed his winter wheels while he was having his others refurbished! Think they were Volvo wheels which he picked up very cheap with tyres.

Cheers mate :) hopefully some more bits to come soon!

Well I've done 4 now so I'm not bad, it's just goin to be a lot different once all the suspension is done so ill have to re learn!

ah sweet what you thinking? It's easier when you can afford to have it off the road for a while.

and a few more little bits

null-148.jpg

This is a fantastic write-up Ash, but maybe it should have started when you bought the car!

Great mods & good plans, a cracking Trophy!

The blue Vee used to belong to Addz, but is looking a bit sheddy these days :dapprove:

Yea bought from one of his sons! It's one impressive collection of ferraris. Even better in the flesh!

yea the vee was very uncared for! I just wanted to wash it haha.

Few bits came through the post today for my ktec style induction kit

being impatient I had to fit it straight away! And whilst I had the intake off I thought I would give the throttle body a quick clean, glad I did because it had a fair bit of oil in it!

In the third photo you can see that the bottom bit of silicone nearest the filter is touching the metal that the ecu bracket and air box mount bolted to.. Anyone got any ideas to prevent it from rubbing and damaging the hose?

also thought I would fit my xenons being as I was working on the car anyway

not 100% sure whether I like them or whether I prefer the more oem look, but they can stay for now!

also thought I would mount the rear of my harnesses in a safer position after reading how they should be mounted properly

and that's it for now! Probably be more to come next weekend when I get round to fitting some more of the bits of got lying around the house.

Looks good :) Abit of spare silicon if you have it attached to the bracket works to stop the rubbing, the official KTR kit comes with a piece of rubber to stop the hose rubbing against the metal. Regarding your gearbox, as far as im aware abit of oil around the breather is fine and 'normal' on all RS Clios, ive had it on both of mine.

Cheers mate, yea I've used a bit of breather hose for now, but I've just ordered some of this rubber edging off eBay for £2.30! http://bit.ly/VgiGrW
Ah that's okay then! Ill give it a clean one day when I get chance and see how quickly it comes back, cheers for the reply :)

  PH1 Track Car
For anyone wanting to know what I used for the ktec style induction kit...
  • 2x 90 degree 70mm ID black silicone hoses (made by autosiliconehoses) http://bit.ly/14rb9OH
  • 70mm OD 150mm alloy joiner http://bit.ly/12DO9qD
  • 70mm OD ramair foam filter with alloy neck http://bit.ly/12DOf1k
  • 4x jubilee clips with an adjustment range of 70-90mm (silicone has an OD of 80mm)
  • and however you choose to set up the breather, whether its catch can or back into the inlet, I used 13mm vacuum hose which gave a nice tight fit
  • If you want to prevent the silicone hose from rubbing on the thin metal that the ecu bracket and front airbox mount bolt to, then I've ordered some rubber edging from eBay http://bit.ly/VgiGrW
if anyone wants any more info feel free to ask!

Thats the rubber edging the KTR kit comes with, or at least it looks exactly the same!

What oil breather did you use? I ordered the ramair one off the bay. I've just sold my KTR induction silicon to get some of the above, plus a 45 degree bend and another joiner to put the original ramair KTR filter a little further down outta the way, will be a tight fit though as I don't wanna remove the headlight adjuster, as its handy being able to see where im going in the dark :)

Edit: Just re-read your post, your already said what you've done with your breather :p

Yea I was going to vent it back into the inlet until I saw how much oil was on my throttle body, so now going to run a catch tank.

very nice, prefer the TT though and i also like at the end of things to do the brake pads are last

Haha, the TT is nice to drive but the clio is faster and more fun!
the list was in no particular order :p I've actually bought some performance friction 97 brake pads already!

Ive also ordered a pure motorsport top mount and strut brace package as part of my refresh, so now I've got all the parts, they will be going on soon, followed by a suspension geometry check and setup, spacers all round, and shims if necessary... So watch this space!

Havent updated in about a month so thought I would do one.
Started fitting some of the suspension components but havent really had the time to do all of them so they are slowly getting done!

Fitted the new centre exhaust mount whilst i was refitting my cat

Fitted my koni rear dampers, really nice shocks, loads of adjustability, really seem to improve the way the car responds when you set them to hard, and definitaly keep the rear end nice and flat, definate improvement!

Fitted my uprated gear lever, overall not bad, an improvement over the original, but as i went the the cheap ebay option the build quality isnt the best, if you can get over that then it isnt too bad.

Got my car dynod at a local place, partly out of curiosity to see what it was running, partly for my college project! It made 171bhp with the ktec style induction kit, not bad but a little less than i would have hoped, but a few bhp isnt going to make a world of difference anyway.

And thats it up until now! hopefully get some more of the suspension components fitted soon and get it set up properly

I also fitted the PF97 pads i bought before the llandow trackday, and all i can say is that the stopping power is insane! no fade whatsoever and i had complete confidence in them. would reccomend them to anyone. only downside is they are pretty dusty when they arent up to temperature, and you will never get them up to temp on the road really, and the dust can be quite difficult to remove, but thats the price you pay.

It was great to see you at Llandow, Ash. Hopefully catch up with you again soon mate. :)

Oh yeah, as for the dyno reading... 171bhp isn't a bad result at all. If Llandow was anything to go by then you've got nothing to worry about!

Small update.

The Sachs have been sent off to cornering force for refurbishing and powder coating, and I also picked up some vibratechnics engine mounts off a friend and got them fitted.

Bit more vibration on idle. Not massive amounts more when driving. But overall feel is improved and the engine no longer rocks backwards and forwards on acceleration so worthwhile.

Just looking forward to getting the Sachs back now!

Ash.
